Arrested Suspects Vandalize Royapettah Hospital During Health Exam; EPS Slams DMK Govt Over Law & Order Breakdown

On 9 June 2024, a group of three suspects vandalised the Government Royapettah Hospital shortly after being brought there by the police for a health examination before judicial remand.

The suspects, identified as ‘Psycho’ Charan, ‘Bonda’ Rajesh, and Dinesh, had been apprehended by the Abhiramapuram police on charges related to the possession and sale of prescription-based narcotic tablets. The police escorted them to the Royapettah Government Hospital to obtain medical clearance before their transfer to judicial custody. Additionally, five individuals, including a transgender woman, arrived at the hospital in support of the detainees.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the suspects caused a disturbance and threatened self-harm, demanding the immediate release of the arrested individuals. In the process, they damaged property including glass windows in the emergency department, a patient examination monitor, medical equipment, computers, and other items, leading to chaos. The hospital management promptly notified the police of the unruly behavior. Despite resistance, law enforcement personnel successfully subdued the suspects and took them into custody, subsequently filing a new case against them.

This incident, where the suspects claimed to be friends of the arrested individuals created chaos in the presence of the police, has sent shock waves through the society.

In this regard, Former Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami criticized the ruling DMK government on social media for allowing such reckless behavior to occur and for the damage inflicted on government property.

Edappadi K Palaniswami used his official X account to criticize the DMK government, “The incident in which a mob damaged medical equipment and glasses in protest against arrests in the case of ganja and murder at Chennai Royapettah Government Hospital is highly condemned. In this “never dawned” DMK regime, drugs, and law and order-disorder has become an identity card, today, there is a lack of security in the government hospital where people come to seek medical help.”

“My strong condemnation to the never dawned DMK government, which is sleeping like Kumbakarna as a conch pay deaf story, despite pointing out several times about the corrupt law and order system of this never dawned DMK government, without taking any steps to fix it. I urge the Chief Minister of the never-dawned DMK Government to immediately repair the damaged medical equipment, take appropriate legal action against the rowdy gang, and take constructive steps to maintain law and order. @CMOTamilnadu” He added.
