The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government’s first months in office have raised growing questions over the fate of major infrastructure and development projects across Tamil Nadu, with several projects either halted, awaiting decisions or showing little visible progress.
From the ₹20,000-crore Parandur greenfield airport to the proposed metro extension, Sports City, flyovers in Chennai, the Hosur Knowledge Corridor and a cricket stadium in Coimbatore, a number of projects initiated or advanced under the previous government now face delays, cancellation or uncertainty.
The emerging picture has prompted questions over whether the new administration is reversing or slowing down major infrastructure projects instead of taking them forward.
1. Parandur Airport — Cancelled
The biggest setback is the proposed Parandur greenfield airport, which was intended to serve as Chennai’s second airport.
The TVK government cancelled the project after coming to power, citing concerns over the impact on agricultural land, wetlands and water resources.
The cancellation effectively brings to an end a major infrastructure project planned to address Chennai’s long-term aviation requirements and accommodate future passenger and cargo growth.
2. Metro Extension To Parandur — Put On Hold
The proposed metro connectivity to Parandur has also been left without a clear path forward following the cancellation of the airport.
The proposed extension was conceived as part of the wider connectivity infrastructure surrounding the second airport.
With the airport project itself scrapped, the metro extension has effectively been put on hold.
This creates a larger question over the fate of the integrated transport infrastructure planned around Parandur.
3. Chennai Sports City — Stalled
The proposed Chennai Sports City is another major project whose status has become uncertain under the new administration.
The project was envisioned as a large-scale sports infrastructure development capable of hosting major sporting events and creating facilities for athletes and the public.
Its absence from the latest budgetary priorities has raised concerns over whether the project has been effectively frozen.
4. ECR Flyover — Halted
The proposed flyover project on the East Coast Road is also among the infrastructure projects facing uncertainty.
The project was intended to improve traffic movement along one of Chennai’s rapidly developing corridors.
With no clear movement under the new administration, questions are being raised over whether the project will be revived, modified or abandoned.
5. Guindy-Velachery Flyover — Halted
The proposed Guindy-Velachery flyover is another major urban mobility project facing uncertainty.
The flyover was planned to address congestion in one of Chennai’s busiest transport corridors.
Its reported lack of progress under the TVK government adds to concerns over delays in critical urban infrastructure projects.
6. Coimbatore Periyar Library — Ready, But Awaiting Inauguration
The proposed Periyar Arivulagam in Coimbatore presents a different problem.
The approximately ₹300-crore complex is reportedly structurally complete, but it is yet to be formally inaugurated.
The project was developed as a major knowledge and cultural centre for Coimbatore.

While officials have indicated that the facility could be inaugurated during Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s upcoming visit to the city, the delay has raised questions over why a completed public infrastructure project remains unopened.
7. Hosur TIDEL Park — Stuck At Tender Stage
The proposed Hosur TIDEL Park is also reportedly stuck despite having progressed through several preparatory stages.
The project had reportedly reached the design and environmental-clearance stage, but tendering for construction has not moved forward.
The delay is significant given Hosur’s growing importance as an industrial and technology hub and its proximity to Bengaluru.
A project intended to strengthen the region’s technology ecosystem therefore remains stuck before physical construction has begun.
8. Hosur Knowledge Corridor — No Work Yet
The proposed Hosur Knowledge Corridor has similarly seen no visible commencement of ground-level work.
The project was conceived as part of a broader effort to create an integrated technology, education and industrial ecosystem around Hosur.
With no physical work reportedly underway, questions remain over whether the TVK government intends to continue with the project in its original form.
9. Coimbatore Cricket Stadium — No Bidders, Project Paused
The proposed Coimbatore cricket stadium has also hit a roadblock.
The initial global tender floated by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) reportedly failed to attract viable bidders under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model.
The project has consequently been put on hold for a review.
Sports Minister Aadhav Arjuna has indicated that the government is examining the proposal and considering modifications based on inputs from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association before deciding whether to re-tender the project or alter the plan.
10. Namakkal SIPCOT — Set To Be Scrapped
The proposed SIPCOT industrial project in Namakkal district, announced during the previous DMK government, is also set to be cancelled under the TVK government.
TVK Minister for Commercial Taxes, Registration and Stamp Duty Lokesh Tamilselvan said the government was making arrangements to stop the project and that the district administration and Industries Department would soon issue an announcement to this effect, as reported by Dinamani.
Tamilselvan alleged that the project had been proposed by the previous DMK government to increase the value of land purchased by party functionaries in the area. He also claimed that the project would adversely affect farmers.
He said Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had instead announced a new SIPCOT project at Lathuvadi, at a different location.
The move means that another industrial development project announced under the previous government is now facing cancellation, with the TVK government proposing an alternative location instead.
A Government Putting Development On Hold?
The pattern is becoming difficult to dismiss. Within its first months in office, the TVK government has cancelled the ₹20,000-crore Parandur airport, left its proposed metro connectivity in limbo, stalled major Chennai infrastructure projects, kept Hosur’s technology projects from moving beyond preparatory stages, and put the Coimbatore cricket stadium on hold. Now, the Namakkal SIPCOT project is also set to be scrapped.
These are not isolated announcements. They span aviation, urban transport, industrial infrastructure, technology, sports and regional development.
While the government may present individual decisions as environmental, financial or administrative choices, the cumulative picture points to something more troubling: projects that were meant to expand Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure and economic capacity are being cancelled, frozen or left without a clear timeline.
For a state competing aggressively for investment, jobs and infrastructure, the question is no longer simply which project is next. It is whether development itself is being pushed backwards under the TVK government.
