Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai has criticized DMK School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh for failing to address the rising incidents of sexual harassment involving female students in Tamil Nadu government schools. Annamalai has called for strict action against DMK member Jyothi, who allegedly interfered in a case of sexual assault to prevent the victim’s parents from reporting the matter to the police.
In a statement on his official X account, Annamalai highlighted an incident that occurred on 22 January at a government school near Attur in Salem district, where a seventh-grade student was sexually assaulted by students from the same school. DMK functionary Jyothi, who is the president of the school’s Parents Teachers Association, allegedly pressured the victim’s parents not to file a police complaint for 20 days, effectively delaying any legal action. The matter only came to light when the parents, after exhausting all other options, reached out to a child helpline.
Annamalai demanded strict action against Jyothi for hindering the filing of a complaint and pointed out the alarming rise in sexual crimes against schoolgirls across the state. He expressed concerns over the unsafe environment in schools and the lack of preventive measures or awareness programs to protect students. Annamalai also called on the School Education Minister to take responsibility and address the issue, asking, “When will the Minister of School Education take action regarding his department’s responsibilities?”
In this regard, Annamalai, via his official X account, stated, “On 22 January, a seventh-grade student at a government school near Attur in Salem district was sexually assaulted by fellow students from the same school. A DMK member named Jyothi, who serves as the president of the school’s Parents Teachers Association, has been preventing the victim from filing a police complaint for the past 20 days, using force to keep the matter from becoming public. The police took action only after the student’s parents had no other choice but to contact the child helpline and file a complaint. Strict action should be taken against DMK functionary Jyothi, who prevented and delayed the parents of the victim from filing a complaint with the police. Sexual crimes against schoolgirls are on the rise across Tamil Nadu with the schools have become an unsafe environment. There has been no effort so far to prevent these crimes or raise awareness among schoolchildren. Tamil Nadu’s schools, the birthplace of future generation is, are of serious concern. When will the Minister of School Education take up the work related to his department?”
