The Madras High Court has advised all the state government departments to work together to identify and recover temple properties. More than 30,000 temples in Tamil Nadu are under the control of the HR&CE department. There are several thousand acres of land and commercial complexes that belong to these temples. However, for many years now, there has been an accusation that the revenue earned from these temples and its properties are not being utilised for the right reasons.
A Kodhandarama temple is situated in Nandambakkam, Chennai. An individual, Ramakrishnan, has filed a case with the High Court, requesting that action be taken to recover and safeguard the properties of this temple. He appeared on behalf of the HR&CE in this case. He then said that the authorities are taking steps to verify the revenue documents and conduct investigations. He also said that action was being taken to recover lost property.
The order given by the judge who heard the case said that the revenue records and documents should be verified with the help of authorities. At the same time, it is also necessary to examine the documents held in order to claim ownership of the property. Further, if the property is found to be belonging to the temple, action will be taken not only to recover it, but also to coordinate with the HR&CE and the Revenue Department. The judge directed the officials of the respective departments to hold a meeting and make arrangements.
