Koovi, the dog who waited for 2 days near the Idukki landslide area in Pettimudi has found a home with the Kerala Police Dog Squad. The nearly 1.5-year-old dog sat there alone and did not eat food for almost a week, ever since she started to frantically search for Dhanuska, the toddler who died in the landslide.
She was found by Ajith Madhavan, a trainer who belonged to the Kerala Police Dog Squad. Ajith spotted Koovi near the site of the landslide. After taking care of her and nurturing her, he has now decided to adopt her. He was reported saying, “I reached Pettimudi around 5 am with my dog squad and started looking for Koovi but could not find her anywhere. Then a resident told me where to find her. She was sitting near one of the line houses (layams) alone. When I called out her name, she wagged her tail and looked at me. When I sat down and then called her, she came walking towards me and snuggled.”
She had then started accompanying him wherever he went during his time in Rajamala, Pettimudi. When he finally had to leave the place, he had entrusted her with a group, who used to send him pictures every day.
Upon noticing that she had looked sad in all of those pictures, he had sought permission from the Idukki Collector and other district officials to adopt Koovi. He is already the dog-father of an 18-year-old indie dog, a beagle and French bulldog.
