The Sterlite plant in Tuticorin is likely to start the production and supply of oxygen, from Wednesday (12 May), bringing relief to doctors and patients in 7 to 8 districts of south Tamil Nadu.
With the Sterlite plant manufacturing oxygen, there is now going to be ample stock that will help overcome the logistical delay in supply from other states to south Tamil Nadu.
The new state government that has been formed under Chief Minister MK Stalin and the local administration have already provided critical support in reactivating Sterlite plant to produce oxygen.
Necessary approvals to ensure demand is met have been provided and the plant is functioning on war footing to start production of oxygen.
Sterlite plant which was shut down under political pressure from some vested interests will initially supplying 35 MT of liquid oxygen with additional capacity to fill another 30 MT of gaseous Oxygen.
However, within a fortnight the company plans to ramp up production of both liquid and gaseous oxygen to 100 MT each.
The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (SIPCOT) is coordinating with the industries, to getting the required cylinders ready.
The Sterlite plant however will have to function under the local administration who will allow activists to monitor the functioning of the plant and this committee is to give assurance to the local people on the safety of the plant.
