Pushpika De Silva, who was crowned Mrs Srilanka, broke down after the crown was seized from her moments after she was announced the winner.
Caroline Jurie, the winner of the previous year’s pageant, took away her crown just after she was crowned, saying she was not eligible to win on account of being a ‘divorcee’. Jurie walked on stage and told the audience, “There is a rule that you have to be married and not divorced. So, I am taking my first step saying that the crown goes to the first runner-up.”
As the crown had gotten lodged into the hair of Ms De Silva, Jurie was found tugging at it, causing the audience to gasp in shock. A visibly upset Pushpika was found breaking down after she was de-crowned.
Following this incident, Pushpika had written on her Facebook handle saying that she was left traumatised after the incident. The post read, “As I write this, I responsibly say that I am not a divorced woman. If I am divorced, I challenge them to submit my divorce papers.” She added that she had sustained injuries to her skull from the incident. She went on to condone Jurie’s actions, saying, “A real queen is not a woman who snatches another woman’s crown, but a woman who secretly sets the other woman’s crown.”
