After Over 100 Lawyers Object, Madurai Bar Associations Withdraw Request To Modify Justice Nisha Banu Transfer Order

In a significant development, the Presidents and Secretaries of the Bar and Advocates Associations of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court have formally withdrawn their earlier representation seeking modification of the transfer order issued in favour of Justice J Nisha Banu.

In a joint communication dated 4 November 2025, addressed to the Chief Justice of India, the Supreme Court Collegium, and the Union Minister for Law and Justice, the associations clarified that the earlier representation sent on 22 October 2025, did not reflect the collective opinion of their members. The earlier letter had requested the Supreme Court Collegium to reconsider or modify Justice Banu’s transfer order.

According to the latest letter, many members of the associations subsequently raised objections, submitting representations signed by over 100 advocates on 30 October 2025, urging the leadership to withdraw the earlier communication. The associations noted that the initial representation was made based on requests from some advocates but was not a decision taken collectively by the Bar.

“In view of the objections raised by our members, we request that our earlier representation dated 22.10.2025 may not be proceeded with in the matter of retention or alternative transfer of Her Ladyship Justice J. Nisha Banu,” the associations stated.

The letter bears the signatures of the Presidents and Secretaries of the Madurai Bench High Court Advocates Association, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court Bar Association (MMBA), and the Madurai Bar Association.
