Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has dismissed speculations about his candidacy for the state BJP leadership, stating that he is not in the race for the position. Speaking to reporters at Coimbatore airport, Annamalai also addressed the recent Waqf Amendment Bill and the controversy surrounding Waqf Board land acquisitions.
Annamalai expressed strong support for the Waqf Amendment Bill recently passed in Parliament, calling it a “boon for poor Muslims.” He criticized political parties in Tamil Nadu for creating confusion around the bill and staging protests.
“The Tamil Nadu BJP welcomes this amendment bill. As usual, political parties here are trying to mislead people. It is our duty to clearly explain this law,” he said.
Highlighting the growth of Waqf Board properties, he noted that the total land under the board’s control in India has surged from 18 lakh acres (1913–2013) to 39 lakh acres (2013–2025), with 21 lakh acres added in just the last 12 years.
“There is a lot of confusion surrounding Waqf Board properties. For example, in Tiruchendur, only one town was originally with the Waqf Board, but temple lands have now been added. This has caused unrest among the people. The Central Government has a duty to resolve this, and the new law provides that solution,” he asserted.
“I Am Not in the Race” – Annamalai on BJP Leadership Change
Amid reports of a leadership change in the Tamil Nadu BJP, Annamalai dismissed speculation about his role in the transition.
“I am not in the race for the new state president. You will run a news today tomorrow saying Annamalai went to Delhi, Annamalai pointed to him, Annamalai did not point to him. I do not want to get into any such gossip. I am not in the race,” he stated.
When asked whether the AIADMK-BJP alliance played a role in the leadership change, he declined to comment directly.
“I do not want to comment on that. According to me, this party should be good—a party where good people and good souls can be found. Many have sacrificed their lives to develop this party. For me, ensuring the party’s growth is the priority. I will have more to say when the new state president is chosen,” he said.
