It was quite alarming to witness the reports emerging from Chennai, detailing the brazen consumption of marijuana by three young individuals using sophisticated crushers and OCB sheets, openly indulging in broad daylight amidst the crowd at Marina Beach.

The incident unfolded near the GU Pope statue on Chennai’s Marina Beach, where the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) had erected shaded areas with barriers to restrict access. Despite these measures, the three youths managed to enter and were seated under the shade, engaging in suspicious conversations and laughter. When Chief Editor Jebarson of News Tamil 24X7 approached, he was astonished to observe them consuming ganja, aided by sophisticated marijuana crushers and OCB sheets. Concerned, he promptly alerted the patrol police.

Initially, the police hesitated to respond, claiming the area fell outside their jurisdiction. However, they eventually arrived to investigate. As officials probed the youths about the source of the ganja, they remained tight-lipped. Upon the police’s arrival, the youths attempted to flee but were apprehended. Subsequently, they were taken into custody, filed a complaint, and eventually released to their families on parole.

The activists are sounding the alarm about the troubling increase in drug use among young people, emphasizing the negative implications for society. They argue that since youths are the cornerstone of the economy, it’s imperative to aggressively tackle the prevalence of drugs. The pressing question is that this time these youths were apprehended before reaching their peak. What if the reporter had questioned them after they were in an altered state? There’s a possibility of assault against the reporter, or they might have harmed the public for amusement, as they are unaware of their actions when under the influence.

A recent incident during the Chithirai festival in the Othakkadai area of Madurai involved youths intoxicated with ganja severely assaulting a family man returning from work. This incident sparked widespread condemnation, with the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court criticizing the police for their perceived lack of action in preventing drug-related incidents. It’s widely agreed that this menace must be swiftly addressed to safeguard the community.
