Iranian Americans in New York City have sharply criticized NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani after he condemned US military strikes on Iran, calling the operation an ‘illegal act of aggression.’
Mamdani posted on X that the strikes represented a catastrophic escalation and an illegal war of aggression, arguing that Americans wanted relief from the affordability crisis rather than another conflict pursued in the name of regime change. He also said he was working with police and emergency management officials to ensure the safety of New Yorkers, and directly addressed the city’s Iranian community, telling them they were part of the fabric of New York and would be safe.
His post said, “Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war. Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace.
I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe. I have been in contact with our Police Commissioner and emergency management officials. We are taking proactive steps, including increasing coordination across agencies and enhancing patrols of sensitive locations out of an abundance of caution.
Additionally, I want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers: you are part of the fabric of this city — you are our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers, and community leaders. You will be safe here.”

The remarks drew swift backlash from Iranian New Yorkers, many of whom accused Mamdani of hypocrisy. Iranian activist Sana Ebrahimi, responding on X, slammed Mamdani, called him an ‘ Islamist human garbage’, accused him of remaining silent while Iranians were persecuted and killed by the Islamic Republic, only to speak out once the regime itself came under attack. She said she would oppose his agenda indefinitely.
She wrote, “Mr @NYCMayor, I say it as an Iranian New Yorker: You are a human garbage. When our people were getting slaughtered and hunted like animals by the Islamic Republic terrorists, you stayed silent. You didn’t say a word. Now that the regime, the murderers of our people are under attack, you came out of the woodwork to defend them. You are an Islamist human garbage and I fight your agenda as long as I breathe.”

Others echoed her sentiments, with some questioning his loyalties and others predicting his political career would be short-lived. Several netizens expressed support for the Iranian people while distancing themselves from Mamdani’s position.
The controversy follows President Donald Trump’s announcement that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed, which Trump described in a Truth Social post as the death of one of the most evil figures in history.
