Yamuna City: A Futuristic City For The Future

The Uttar Pradesh government’s Yamuna Authority is working on an ambitious project to develop a modern city, expected to be completed by 2051. The city is being built around the upcoming Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. This will be India’s first Aerotropolis, with commercial and residential spaces surrounding the airport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the airport in November 2021, which will be spread over 1,300 hectares of land. The airport’s first phase is expected to be completed by 2024, and it will be the country’s first net-zero emissions airport.

The UP government, along with the central government, is working to establish the Aerotropolis near the Noida airport to make it a chance to boost the country’s and state’s economy. An Aerotropolis is a sub-region whose infrastructure, land use, and economy are centered around an airport. Last year, the officials of the Yamuna Authority announced the proposal for YEIDA’s Master Plan 2041, which led to the UP government incorporating around 55 villages into the Yamuna Authority.

The Yamuna City being built by the Yamuna Authority will be twice the size of Delhi, covering an area of 3000 km². Comparatively, it is 15 times bigger than Noida and four times bigger than Gurgaon. Reports suggest that this city will not just be a modern city with commercial buildings, but also include an Olympic Park and Olympic Village.

The city’s development is expected to be completed by 2050, coinciding with the final phase of the Noida International Airport’s completion and operation in full potential. The mega-project, undertaken by the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government, is expected to boost the local business and create property demand in the airport’s vicinity, making it easier to achieve the vision for a $1 trillion economy.

The UP government recently hosted a three-day international summit in Lucknow, where it signed MoUs worth more than ₹30 Lakh Crore, aiming to provide jobs to around 95 lakh individuals. This master plan is expected to play a vital role in the growth of the state’s economy by making connectivity easier and creating the state as an industrial hub.

In conclusion, Yamuna City’s development is expected to transform the region’s landscape, which will have a cascading effect on the state’s economy, and contribute to India’s growth story.
