Woman’s Arm Amputated After Alleged Medical Negligence At Chennai’s Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Health Min Says Can Only Extend Medical Help Not Financial Compensation

In a shocking incident, a woman named Jyoti, who was initially in good health when she sought angio treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Chennai, had to undergo the amputation of her arm due to alleged negligent treatment.

Jyoti, a 32-year-old woman from the Washermanpet area in Chennai, was admitted to a private hospital and subsequently referred to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital on the advice of private doctors for angio treatment.

Despite having no prior injuries, Jyoti underwent angio treatment on the 15th. However, after the procedure, her treated arm became swollen and developed blood clots. Her husband, Zeenath, a differently-abled person, claimed that the doctors not only failed to provide an explanation but also alleged that they had removed all the flesh from her hands and feet. Doctors initially cited a blood clot as the issue. Zeenath expressed his distress, saying, “Yesterday they told me that my wife could only survive if her right arm was amputated. Today they are saying that they have to remove her left leg as well. If she came for angio treatment in good health, they treated her with such carelessness that it has put her life at risk.”

In response to the incident, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian in response to a question by a reporter who asked whether the patient will be given financial assistance stated, “Will the government offer any financial assistance? Our first priority is to save her. We are giving 20000 people treatment here. If everyone asks for financial assistance for medical reasons, can we give all of them? To do this on humanitarian grounds can be thought about later. Right off the bat, if someone asks for financial help, will you do it? We can only offer medical assistance. Other things come later. The patient herself has not asked for anything, you people are instigating them all the time. The government is doing all it can to save her life and we have given word that we will take up the medical expenditure. Then why are you asking about financial assistance again and again? You say you are a humanitarian, why don’t you donate 10 lakh rupees?”

This is not the first time such an instance of alleged medical negligence has occurred. Over the past 8 months, several such incidents involving women and children have been reported.

Some netizens questioned why the government was in a hurry to give financial assistance to those who knowingly consumed illicit liquor in the state.

The Health Minister of the DMK government has consistently failed to provide satisfactory explanations to address the rumors and accusations of medical negligence in these incidents. Rather than offering a comprehensive response to inquiries from the media regarding these allegations, he arrogantly asked a reporter to shell out 10 lakhs if he was so concerned. It’s worth noting that these are just a handful of documented cases, and it’s uncertain how many instances of medical negligence may have occurred but remain unreported.
