Just as the state reels under the highhandedness of the Tamil Nadu Police, in the backdrop of the custodial death of temple security guard Ajithkumar in Sivaganga district, a 2022 video of DMK Minister for Municipal Administration, Urban and Water Supply, KN Nehru, speaking about the “integrity” of the state’s police began making the rounds.
Speaking at an event in 2022 in what seems like an event at a private IAS academy, Nehru is seen saying that a deputy superintendent of police had the ability to do anything that he wanted. He said, “The one who has come has become a DSP today. He used to be an SI. He used to be part of the security who would accompany us. He has been promoted as DSP today. He has the ability to do anything. The talent that he has is he can do anything. If he wants, he’ll make one a convict or remove one from the convict list. I don’t want to say anything else as he grew up with us,”
