West Bengal extends lockdown till July 31

Due to the rapid Rise in cases in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee has extended the lockdown until 31st July. West Bengal has recorded 15,173 COVID-19 cases so far and 591 deaths.

Originally, the lockdown  was supposed to be ending by the 30th of June. But as the coronavirus cases crossed 15,000, the state government has extended the lockdown in the end of July. This announcement came after discussions at an all party meeting. The Trinamool Congress government has affirmed that the existing relaxations will continue to be present.

This means that all educational institutions will remain closed until the 31st of July, as will the Metro and suburban trains as well as public transport. Restaurants and eateries will continue to function adhering to the guidelines previously imposed in the unlock 1 phase. Places of worship will also remain open, while all officers are ordered the function at 70% attendance on any given day.

West Bengal is not the only state to have reposed lockdown, since Tamil Nadu has also restore the strict lockdown status from 19th June till the end of the month.

Following suit with West Bengal, Karnataka chief minister Yeddyurappa has also warned of a potential lock down restoration. This is because Bengaluru, in particular, has seen a huge rise in cases, with the city crossing the 1,000 cases mark this month. The city has a total of 1,685 cases so far.
