Opposition to the upcoming film The Kerala Story 2 has intensified in Tamil Nadu, with Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi (MJK) General Secretary MH Thamimun Ansari warning of large-scale protests if the movie is screened in the State.
The sequel to The Kerala Story, which had earlier triggered nationwide controversy, is currently in production and expected to release soon. Even before its release, political resistance has begun to build in Tamil Nadu.
In a strongly worded statement, Ansari said the film was not a genuine artistic work but a tool that could spread hatred against a particular community.
“The Kerala Story–2 is not a work of art; it is a tool that sows hatred against a specific community. Such films are deliberately created to disturb social harmony. If inciting riots is given the name of cinema, opposing it democratically becomes our duty,” he said.
He warned that if attempts are made to screen the film in Tamil Nadu, his party and allied groups would not remain passive.
“We will mobilise democratic forces and stage siege protests in front of theatres that screen this film. We will not allow anyone to spread toxic ideas in the peaceful land of Tamil Nadu,” Ansari said.
Ansari also issued an appeal to theatre owners, urging them to voluntarily refrain from screening the film in order to avoid law-and-order problems.
He claimed the movie contains scenes and dialogues that could harm communal harmony and public peace, and said theatre operators should act responsibly to prevent tensions.
Leaders like Ansari argue that films of this nature attempt to create hostility between religious communities under the cover of freedom of expression. When the first part of The Kerala Story was released, several shows in Tamil Nadu were reportedly cancelled following protests and low audience turnout. Political observers expect the sequel may face a similar situation.
