BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan took a dig at those who opposed The Kerala Story movie by asking them to watch a movie as a movie.
BJP Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan and AIADMK Coimbatore North MLA Amman Arjunan inaugurated a Anganwadi Centre in Sivananda Colony area of Coimbatore district. Vanathi Srinivasan spoke to the media following the event and informed them that funds have been allocated for six new Anganwadi centres. MLA Vanathi went on to say that the Tamil Nadu government should inspect Anganwadi centres throughout the state and that those who work in Anganwadi centres should be paid a decent wage.
When questioned about the controversy surrounding The Kerala Story movie, BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan said, “In this country, everyone has the right to freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is limited by certain reasonable restrictions. It was upheld by courts in several judgements. Similarly several courts have dismissed petitions filed against the movie (The Kerala Story).”
The Kerala Story is an Indian Hindi-language film directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The plot follows the story of a group of women from Kerala who converted to Islam and joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Political parties in Kerala alleged that the movie promotes the Sangh Parivar’s agenda.
In light of this, when a journalist asked BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan about the controversy surrounding the film, she responded by advising to watch the film as a film.
MLA Vanathi added, “On several instances in the past, the leaders from opposition parties asked us to look at a movie as just movies. I would like to tender the same advise to them.”
It is worth noting that when the BJP opposed films such as Mersal, The Godman web series, and others, parties such as the DMK, VCK, CPM, CPI, and others claimed that the BJP was stifling freedom of expression.
