A dispute over the implementation of the unified Holy Mass in the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly escalated into violence at St. Sebastian’s Church, Prasadagiri, Varikkankunnu, on Saturday, 1 February 2025.

During the Holy Mass, a group of devotees confronted the priest in charge, Father John Thottuppuram, attempting to prevent him from conducting the service. The situation turned violent as the priest was pushed off the altar, and church property, including microphones and vestments, was damaged.

Following the incident, the Thalayolaparambu police registered four cases based on Father Thottuppuram’s complaint, which alleged that a faction led by former vicar Jerin Palathingal was responsible for the attack. Several individuals sustained injuries in the scuffle, and four people were taken into custody.

In response to the unrest, authorities have locked down the church. The dispute over the unified Holy Mass continues to fuel tensions within the parish.
