A DMK cadre who had created ruckus at a tea shop near Mannargudi was thrashed by the public and then handed over to the police.

Anandan (48) of Surakkottai in Thanjavur district, runs a bakery and tea shop on the Mannargudi-Pattukottai road.

Eight people, including Mannargudi city DMK youth secretary Sudhakar (42), agricultural wing city organizer Pandavar (54), and city deputy secretary of the party’s students wing Murugesan (48), arrived in a car yesterday evening. After bathing in the river at Surakkottai, they had tea at a bakery.

They had an heated exchange for cigarettes at a nearby petty shop and spoke obscenely to a woman named Revathi who was in the store. They went on to grab her dupatta. Anandan’s son Vasanthan (24), and other staff at the shop intervened and confronted the DMK cadres.

The enraged mob of DMK cadres severely beat them and smashed the items in the bakery. In this, Revathi, Vasanthan, bakery employees Tirupati (25), Bhaskar (24) and a customer named Karthikeyan (35) were injured.

The villagers, who came to know about the incident, grabbed the DMK men and thrashed them. Two of them managed to escape in a car. Six people, including Sudhakar, Pandavar and Murugesan, were injured in the attack. They were rescued by the police and admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.

Based on Revathi’s complaint, a case has been filed against 6 DMK men and another case has been filed against 9 villagers on the basis of a complaint filed by DMK men.
