Video of Coimbatore police officer violently attacking customers in restaurant goes viral

A police officer who lathi-charged people who were sitting and eating in a restaurant in Coimbatore has caused quite a stir on social media. In the CCTV video footage, the officer, a sub-inspector of police, was seen standing in the said restaurant, which is situated in the Central bus stand in Coimbatore’s Gandhipuram and watching those who were entering it.

The eatery’s owner said that last week, the same police officer had eaten at his restaurant and had refused to pay for  the food. When he had asked to pay for the food, the sub inspector had threatened the owner.

When he noticed a few customers eating at the restaurant walking towards the exit, he started violently attacked them with his lathi. Three people were gravely injured in the incident and have been admitted to the Government Hospital in Coimbatore. One of the victims is a woman from Hosur.

The CCTV footage of this specific incident has become viral on social media and is causing chills to run through the spine of whomsoever watches it.

The police officer was identified to be Sub Inspector Muthu from the Kaattoor police station. Following this, the sub-inspector was transferred to control room duty and was taken off field duty after there were complaints registered against his name. The city’s assistant commissioner also promised that appropriate action will be taken against the officer.
