A man surrendered to the police after allegedly murdering his wife, a ward councillor, in a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the locality.

The accused, Stephen Raj, is the Secretary of the Thiruninravur unit of the Viduthalai Siruthaigal Katchi (VCK). His wife, Gomathi, served as the elected councillor for the 26th ward and was also the Chairperson of the Taxation Committee of the Thiruninravur Municipality. The couple had been married for over a decade and have four sons.

According to initial police reports, there had been ongoing marital disputes between the couple, reportedly over Gomathi’s alleged relationship with another man. On the night of the incident, Stephen Raj is said to have confronted Gomathi near Jayaram Nagar, where she was reportedly seen speaking with the man in question.

An argument ensued between the couple, during which Stephen Raj allegedly attacked Gomathi using a knife concealed inside his walking stick. She sustained fatal injuries to her head, face, neck, and torso, and died on the spot.

An investigation has been launched into the motive behind the killing, including inquiries into the role of the man reportedly seen with Gomathi at the time.
