The relentless acts of political parties seem unending in Tamil Nadu, especially when they hold positions in power. A recent incident, widely circulated on social media, involved party members seeking donations. Shockingly, they assaulted a shop administrator in broad daylight, demanding additional funds, leaving the community in a state of fear and anxiety.
Balakrishnan, a retired army personnel, has been managing Kali Engineering Works, a rolling shutter manufacturing and automation facility in Koranattukkaruppur, Kumbakonam, for the past twenty-five years. The operational responsibilities have been shouldered by his son, Soundaryan, while the facility is overseen by his son-in-law, Mohan.
Recently, a group of individuals claiming to be members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) party entered the premises. They initially requested donations for a village temple festival, and Mohan, present at the facility, promptly contributed ₹2,000. However, the situation escalated when the VCK members insisted on a larger sum, demanding ₹50,000. A heated exchange ensued, culminating in an aggressive physical assault on Mohan by the VCK cadres. The attackers even dragged Mohan onto the road.
Fortunately, the gathering support from people on the road forced the assailants to flee the scene. Subsequently, Mohan was rushed to the Kumbakonam Government Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Balakrishnanan, the owner of Kali Engineering Works, filed a case with the Kumbakonam police regarding the incident.
While conversing with the news reporter, Balakrishnan, a retired army veteran, somberly conveyed the details of the incident. “I have served the country, but I am not able to protect my business in this town, and I am not able to protect my son and son-in-law. I don’t know where to go and tell this tragedy. In this regard, I have filed a complaint in Taluka police station they registered FIR have taken action and arrested.”
The Kumbakonam taluk police, aided by CCTV footage, have filed a case against Karuppur Kanagaraj, Bhoominadhan, and nine additional individuals, with seven of them currently evading arrest. Kanagaraj and Bhoominadhan have been apprehended and are currently held in custody.
