“Vain Advertisement” – TN BJP President Annamalai Slams DMK’s Coimbatore Event “Mupperum Vizha” Citing Neglect Of People’s Issues

The Tamil Nadu BJP President, K. Annamalai, has criticized the DMK government’s decision to hold a three-year anniversary celebration, “Mupperum Vizha,” in Coimbatore on 15 June 2024, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Annamalai alleged that the event would not benefit the public and accused the DMK of neglecting the long-standing demands of the people of Coimbatore.

In a press release, Annamalai stated that the event was initially scheduled for 14 June 2024 but was postponed by a day since former DMK minister Senthil Balaji was arrested in a money laundering case on the same date last year. He claimed that the DMK wanted to avoid celebrating it as a “quadruple festival.”

Annamalai accused the DMK government of increasing electricity tariffs by two times, introducing artificial tariff hikes, shutting down small and micro industries in Coimbatore, destroying people’s livelihoods, abusing power through commission collection in all industries, and failing to properly utilize funds provided by the central government for the Smart City project in Coimbatore.
The BJP leader claimed that Coimbatore’s education and industry sectors are dysfunctional under the DMK rule. He also criticized the DMK for failing to implement the long-promised Athikadavu project, despite including it in their election manifesto for the past thirty years since the late DMK President M. Karunanidhi’s time.

Annamalai highlighted the neglect of the Siruvani, Noyal, and Kausika rivers, which he claimed are lying in ruins without attention from the DMK government. He also alleged that the DMK government’s electricity tariff hike has crippled the livelihood of powerloom workers while the Chief Minister is focused on the anniversary celebration and crowning his successor.

The BJP President stated that Coimbatore’s immediate needs are road facilities, solutions to water scarcity, and proper garbage removal. He warned that the festival could turn Coimbatore into a garbage dump by bringing in waste from all over Tamil Nadu in the name of the “Mupperum festival.”

Annamalai called on the DMK government to prioritize the implementation of the Athikadavu Avinasi project, the rehabilitation of water bodies, the prevention of water scarcity, the protection of the livelihoods of coconut farmers, handloom and powerloom workers, road repairs, and accident prevention.

He claimed that if the DMK government fulfills even one-tenth of the election promises made by the Tamil Nadu BJP, it would address Coimbatore’s long-standing concerns. However, Annamalai argued that the people are unlikely to benefit from the anniversary celebration, which he described as a “vain advertisement.”
