Recently, various illicit goods including ganja, sea cucumber, methamphetamine crystal, heroin, bundles of beedi leaves, silver bangles, fertilizer, and edible turmeric have been discovered being smuggled to Sri Lanka via the Thoothukudi sea route. To combat this, Central and State intelligence agencies, along with the Indian Coast Guard, Marine Police, and Thoothukudi District Police, are maintaining rigorous surveillance in both sea and coastal areas to prevent such smuggling activities.

In a recent incident, acting on confidential information received by Thoothukudi District Special Inspector Ravikumar, a raid was conducted at a residence in Inigo Nagar, Thoothukudi. During the raid, authorities uncovered 8 kg of methamphetamine crystal inside a house.

Following the seizure, special police forces arrested Nirmal Raj and his wife Shivani, who were present at the residence, and handed them over to the Thoothukudi Prohibition Enforcement Division.

Investigators are now probing the arrested individuals to determine the source of the crystal meth and whether it was intended for smuggling to Sri Lanka. Officials estimate the seized 8 kg of crystal meth to be valued at approximately ₹8 crore locally, with an international market value potentially reaching ₹24 crore. Further investigations are underway to identify any accomplices involved in the smuggling operation.
