Congress national spokesperson Mohan Kumar Mangalam has taken a dig at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Education Minister Rajmohan over his remarks on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls adding to the speculation of a growing rift between the TVK and the Congress.
Speaking to the press, Rajmohan was asked about the Tamil Nadu government’s position on SIR and TVK’s stand on the exercise. He said the party had consistently opposed the SIR process and would continue to do so.
“That is a good question, comrade. Then, now, and forever, the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam opposes the SIR process itself. Changing just one individual, the commissioner, will not resolve this. Take a look at the statements our leader gave even before we came to power. We oppose the SIR, we will oppose the SIR, the entire SIR process we have been opposing is a massive scam. Our leader said back then that if a fair and free election is to be held, there must be major reforms in this SIR system. We still remain in that same position. They are just using scapegoats, letting people protest as if changing one individual will fix things, while they try to escape accountability by swapping them out. We will not yield to this politics of diversion. We always stand by the stance we took back then. We oppose the SIR.”
Rajmohan’s remarks came amid the ongoing political controversy surrounding the SIR exercise and allegations concerning differences within the Election Commission.
According to the claims being raised by the Congress and other opposition parties, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on 14 occasions over a period of 10 months, while Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar allegedly took decisions independently. Opposition parties have subsequently intensified their criticism of the Election Commission and called for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Sharing a video of Rajmohan’s remarks, Congress national spokesperson Mohan Kumar Mangalam took a sarcastic swipe at the TVK minister.
“Sometimes, it is better to remain silent than to open your mouth and reveal your ignorance.”
