The Tamil Nadu government has come under sharp criticism as the stray dog menace continues to grow unchecked across the state. Alarming data now places Tamil Nadu at the top in the country for dog bite incidents. However, instead of taking urgent steps to address the crisis, the government appears to be looking the other way. In a move that has baffled many, the Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Department recently issued a circular promoting the sale of indigenous dog breeds.

This glaring misplacement of priorities addressing a public health crisis with a sales circular has triggered strong backlash. According to recent figures, over 3.67 lakh people have suffered dog bites in Tamil Nadu in just the last eight months, with 20 deaths reported this year alone a shocking indictment of administrative inaction.

Against this backdrop, Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran launched a scathing attack on the DMK government, questioning its misplaced responsibilities and accusing it of ignoring the real problems faced by the people.

Responding to this on his official X handle, Nagenthiran asked sharply, “Tamil Nadu is the number one state for dog bites! Immediate action is needed to protect the people! The news that 3.67 lakh people in Tamil Nadu have been affected by dog bites in the last eight months alone, and that 20 people have died this year, is shocking. It also exposes the poor administration of the ruling DMK government. Is raising Tamil Nadu to the number one spot in the country for dog bites the four-year achievement of the DMK government? The people of Tamil Nadu are already living in fear due to the law and order situation, which has deteriorated under the disorganized rule of the DMK, now, with the uncontrollable proliferation of stray dogs, they are afraid to even go out in public. It is laughable that the ruling government, which is incapable of controlling the mad dogs on the street, has now decided to sell good breeds of dogs themselves.

We cannot tolerate any longer the DMK government, which doesn’t even think about what the real problems of the Tamil Nadu people are, what their needs are, or what the duty of a government is, creating plans for their own hobbies and wasting taxpayers’ money on a life of luxury. People will no longer tolerate a Chief Minister who shirks his responsibilities and only cares about photoshoots. What happened to the “Tamil Nadu State Dog Breeding Policy” that was introduced last year to control the increasing number of stray dogs and rabies cases since the DMK came to power? Where did the crores of rupees allocated for animal welfare every year go? Are rabies vaccines available in all government hospitals? Are proper medical treatments being given for dog bites? Why has the government not yet condemned the Kerala government for bringing their stray dogs and leaving them in the Kanyakumari district? Chief Minister  M.K. Stalin must answer all these questions.

With only a few months left in their term, the DMK government must accelerate measures to control the breeding of stray dogs and the spread of rabies. Otherwise, the Tamil Nadu BJP will lead many protests to condemn the DMK government for toying with the lives of the Tamil Nadu people!”
