TN HR&CE officials celebrate birthday of employee by cutting cake inside temple premises

Members of the Hindu Munnani have staged a sit-in protest in front of the Magudeshwara temple in Kodumudi, Erode, demanding the immediate suspension of the Executive Officer and other staff for blowing candles and cutting a cake to celebrate a Birthday, inside the temple premises, which goes against the religious beliefs of the temple. A HR&CE officer has justified that a physically challenged individual has started as an employee in the temple and hence the cake was cut as a mark of celebration. However, devotees have requested a detailed  enquiry into this matter.

The popular Magudeshwara temple is situated in Kodumudi, Erode. It is a very important temple of the Kongu region, on which Appar, Sundarar and Sambandhar have sung Thevarams. Kaveri, which travels from North to South, takes a diversion at this temple to travel towards the East. This temple of utmost importance and glory is visited by several devotees, on a daily basis.

The devotees of the temple have accused the Executive officer and staffs of the temple for going against the religious beliefs and traditions (Agamas) of the temple. In light of such complaints, a recent news showed that the staff and Executive officer, blew candles and cut cake in front of the Amman shrine of the temple, going against the temple’s traditions. Due to this reason, members of the Hindu Munnani staged a protest in front of the temple, on 22nd Dec, demanding immediate suspension of the Executive Officer, Supervisors and staff of the temple.

The temple’s Executive Officer Ramesh said that a cake was cut because a newly hired officer joined duty. But, criticism has arisen that it is completely wrong to cut a egg cake in the temple, especially in front of the Amman shrine.

A few months ago, news broke out that the temple staff at the Thiruvateswaran temple in Chennai had taken off their shoes inside the temple and piled up rubbish near the temple God’s chariot car, causing discontent among Hindus.
