TN Fin Min PTR skipped GST Council meet to attend baby shower and other functions

In a shocking disclosure, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan has revealed that he had skipped the GST Council meet at Lucknow to attend a baby shower ceremony.

The 45th Meeting of the GST Council took place at Lucknow on Friday (September 17). This was the first in-person meeting of the GST Council since March 2020 when the 39th GST Council meeting happened. The subsequent meeting happened virtually due to the nationwide lockdown in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many important deliberations were made during the meeting including agenda of bringing petroleum products under GST.

However, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister had skipped this meeting in Lucknow and had issued a long statement opposing the move to bring petroleum products under GST and the levying of 18% tax rate for coconut oil sold in less than 1 litre bottles.

While reasons for the skipping of the meet was initially thought to be political, it has no come to light that the MIT-educated Finance Minister PTR had skipped the meeting to attend a baby shower ceremony among other government/party functions. He said that they were informed of the mandatory physical meeting a week before and that he could not cancel his other plans. He also said that it would take 1.5-2 days to go to Lucknow and come back.

In this light, many on social media have been asking if attending baby shower ceremony was more important than GST meet.

It was also pointed out that a Chennai-Lucknow flight only takes 2.5 unlike claimed by the Finance Minister.
