In an alleged case of ‘love jihad’ in Tamil Nadu a girl Sumathira, (name changed), who was studying in class 12 in Uppathukadu near Thimmampatti village, committed suicide by consuming pesticide.
On January 18, Sumathira was rushed to Arthur government hospital after she had consumed pesticide. Unfortunately, she died the same day but the police registered a case as ‘unnatural death’ and conducted an autopsy.
Sumathira’s parents cremated her body without making any protests, but the Superintendent of Police ordered the local Sub Inspector Sivashankar to question a Muslim youth named, Amir Khan (22), a commerce graduate, working in a software firm near Salem.
After questioning, the police asked Khan to make himself available if and when required. Meanwhile, the Police seized the phone from Sumithara’s parents and analyzed her call records, and found she frequently called a particular number. However, before committing suicide the alleged victim of love jihad had deleted the history of all calls and WhatsApp records by formatting but the cyber wing police managed to retrieve the conversations.
A reliable source from the area, who does not want to be quoted, said, “Amir Khan’s mother was teaching Sumathira in the school. His father, Rahamuthulla is the head of the local jamaat. Amir Khan had befriended her when he used to drop his mother in the school. Their friendship developed into sharing mobile numbers and used to chat frequently. On coming to know this, her parents went to Amir Khan’s house on January 15 and warned him not to spoil their daughter’s future. What prompted her to take the extreme decision of committing suicide by consuming pesticide is still baffling.”
According to advocate Ramalingam, the girl had met the boy while going to NEET Coaching Centre, located in the same complex where Amir Khan works. Slowly, they exchanged phone numbers, and later Khan allegedly proposed marriage but tried to avoid her phone calls which led to her committing suicide.
Ramalingam said, “It is not a love matter but beyond it. If we see the boy’s Instagram and Facebook messages and chats, it is a clear love jihad case. Amir Khan has been in contact with so many girls. Police should probe whether more Hindu girls have fallen to his love jihad net. The safety of Hindu girls is in danger. It is high time. Hindu outfits should sit and evolve a strategy to overcome it.”
“Muslims are dominant in the area, and because of this, Hindu Munnani has grown in the Thammampatti area,” said a worker.
