Durai Vaiko, the principal secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) party and Trichy MP, has stirred controversy by referring indirectly to Naam Tamil Katchi leader Seeman as “low-born.” This remark came after Seeman criticized Dravidian ideologue EV Ramasamy Naicker, commonly known as Periyar, prompting backlash from various Dravidian sympathizers.
Seeman’s comments, which he insists are based on writings by Periyar himself, have been condemned as defamatory by several political figures sympathetic to Dravidian ideology. In response, Vaiko addressed the controversy during a press interaction on 27 January 2025 in Erode.
When asked about Seeman’s critical remarks about EVR, Durai Vaiko stated, “This is Periyar’s soil. Thanthai Periyar was a beacon of social justice, a guide not only for Tamil Nadu but also for India. Today, if Tamil Nadu is spearheading in various sectors, it is because of the educational growth that was laid by the Dravidian movement and Thanthai Periyar. If women’s rights and women’s society have progressed, it is because of Thanthai Periyar. In such a situation, we are fully confident that the people of Erode, the birthplace of Thanthai Periyar, should teach a fitting lesson to those who disparage Periyar, who fought for women’s rights and social development. If there is proficiency in English today, it is because of the two-language policy. Youth and students in Europe, America, and worldwide are influencing various sectors because of their English proficiency. For many things like social justice and everything else, the foundation was laid by Thanthai Periyar. If someone disrespects such a great man, a man who has worked for us, then he is low-born.”
