The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tamil Nadu unit has called on the DMK government to reject the recommendations of a report by a one-man committee headed by retired Madras High Court judge, Justice K. Chandru. The report suggests banning school students from wearing wristbands, rings, or forehead marks that may indicate their caste.
The committee was formed following a shocking incident in Nanguneri, Tirunelveli district, in August 2023, where two Scheduled Caste school children were assaulted by students from a dominant caste. In response to this incident, Justice Chandru’s report aims to “prevent” such caste-based discrimination and violence in schools by eliminating “visible caste indicators“.
BJP leader H. Raja criticized the report, claiming it unfairly targets Hindu practices. “The recommendations of the report target one particular religion. People who spoke in favour of wearing hijab are now recommending that Hindu women should not wear a mark on their forehead or sacred wrist threads. We believe that this is an evangelistic report,” Raja stated.
Speaking to the media at Kamalalayam in Chennai, Raja argued that the report is controversial and discriminatory. “The report by Justice Chandru is controversial as it is targeted at Hindus. How could the report object to tilak [forehead markings]? The State government should reject the report in its entirety.”

Interestingly, the report has nothing to mention about religious markings or symbols for Christian or Muslim students. It is noteworthy that the committee recommended that the points presented be abided by the students and parents, failing which strict action would be taken.
