Tension prevailed in the Guruvayurappan Nagar–Arivoli Nagar area near Palladam after residents objected to the opening of a newly constructed mosque, alleging that it had been built without obtaining proper permission.
Residents of the locality had earlier submitted a petition to Palladam Tahsildar Sabari, urging action against the alleged unauthorized construction. Officials said that the mosque’s inauguration was scheduled for the day, prompting residents to warn that they would stage a protest if permission was granted for worship activities.
Police sources said that following reports of plans to lay siege to the Palladam taluk office, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed in the area on Thursday (23 October 2025) to prevent any untoward incidents.
During a peace committee meeting led by Tahsildar Sabari, it was stated that approval from the District Collector and the Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) was mandatory for the construction of any place of worship, and that religious activities should not be conducted until such permission was obtained. Officials added that the inauguration could be held only after adhering to these procedures, which participants in the meeting reportedly accepted.
Meanwhile, Indu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath was expected to visit the area. Police said that a protest had been announced under his leadership against the alleged unauthorized mosque, and that precautionary measures, including his possible preventive detention, were being considered.
