Tension prevailed in Araikulam village under the Palayamkottai union of Tirunelveli district after a dispute erupted over alleged encroachment on temple land and the assault of temple staff.
According to reports, a family led by a man named Samraj has encroached upon around 25 cents of land near the Isakki Amman Temple in the village, blocking access to the pathway leading to the temple. Nearly two months ago, the temple administration had submitted a formal complaint to the revenue department seeking removal of the encroachment.
However, the issue escalated two days ago when Samraj allegedly demolished the steps of the Isakki Amman Temple and attacked three members of the temple administration, including the temple priest. The injured individuals were admitted to the Tirunelveli Government Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Condemning the attack and demanding immediate action, members of the Hindu Munnani, led by Nellai district division secretary K. Brahmanayagam, gathered at the District Collector’s office today. Over 50 villagers participated in the demonstration and submitted a petition urging authorities to arrest those involved in the assault and to recover the encroached land belonging to the temple.
