‘Tamilaga’ Vettri Kazhagam Head Vijay Makes Over 30 Mistakes In Official Letter In Tamil To Party Cadres

Tamil scholars and netizens have expressed strong outrage after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay released an official statement announcing the party’s second state conference in Madurai. The letter, intended as a formal communication, was riddled with grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and colloquial expressions widely seen as an affront to the very linguistic and cultural traditions it attempted to evoke.

Adding insult to injury, the statement referenced Madurai the revered cradle of Tamil Sangam literature and a symbol of classical Tamil heritage while using casual, substandard language that blatantly violated formal Tamil grammar norms. For many, this was not just careless it was viewed as a deliberate insult to the legacy of the Tamil language and a concerning precedent for the youth.

The statement, issued via Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s official handle on 12 August 2025, read, “We are moving through the next stages of our political journey. Despite the challenges and pressures we face, we overcome them with the power of the people, your support and the grace of God. We are fully preparing for the upcoming 2026 state assembly elections. In this context, you all know that we are holding our second state conference on Thursday, 21 August 2025, in Parapatti, Madurai. The goal of this conference, held in Madurai, the city that fostered the three forms of Tamil, is to affirm our commitment to relentlessly oppose our ideological and political adversaries, defeat them in a democratic battle, and establish good governance for the people of Tamil Nadu. That’s why I’m very happy to share with you that this conference on the banks of the Vaigai will be centered on the election theme, “History of Victory Returns; Tamil Nadu in a Victory Rally.” Let’s get ready for the conference and shake up the state. We are not an alternative force. Let’s once again show the world that we are the primary force.”

However, the message’s tone and presentation replete with misspellings, poor syntax, and colloquial phrasing drew sharp criticism from linguistic purists, educators, and the public alike. The irony of invoking Madurai’s classical literary heritage while simultaneously degrading the language was not lost on observers.

Critics argue that a leader who claims to champion Tamil pride should at the very least uphold basic linguistic standards in official communications. Instead, Vijay’s statement is being condemned as a dangerous example particularly to impressionable youth of how cultural respect can be undermined by careless populism and linguistic negligence.

A detailed breakdown of the errors in the letter is attached below. As you can note, there are over 30 spelling and grammatical errors in the original letter, as highlighted below.
