Tamil Nadu: Auto Drivers Book And Trap Bike Taxi Drivers To Intimidate

Tamil Nadu: Auto Drivers Book, Trap Bike Taxis; Police Choose Negotiation With Auto Drivers For Rowdyism Over Action

Tension prevailed on a public road in Sriperumbudur after a group of auto-rickshaw drivers allegedly booked rides through the Rapido app to summon bike taxis and detain them, citing violations of transport rules and loss of livelihood.

According to reports, auto drivers in Sriperumbudur collectively used their mobile phones to book rides on the Rapido application and called nearly 10 bike taxi riders to a specific location. Once the riders arrived, the auto drivers reportedly stopped them and seized their two-wheelers. The detained vehicles were then taken and handed over to the Regional Transport Office (RTO).

The auto drivers claimed that using two-wheelers for commercial passenger services violated transport regulations. They also alleged that the growing use of bike taxis by the public had significantly reduced their passenger base, affecting their daily earnings and livelihood.

Following the incident, police reached the spot and held talks with the auto drivers instead of taking further action against the rowdyism. After negotiations, the police facilitated the return of the two-wheelers to the bike taxi riders. The situation was brought under control, and traffic movement in the area was restored.
