Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday, 13 February 2026, announced the disbursal of ₹5,000 to women beneficiaries under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam, projecting the transfer as part of his government’s continued commitment to women’s welfare ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

In a post on X, Stalin said the payment covers three months, February, March, and April, with ₹3,000 constituting the regular monthly entitlement and an additional ₹2,000 provided as a “summer special” assistance. According to the Chief Minister, the amount has already been credited to 1.31 crore women enrolled under the scheme.

Framing the transfer as a matter of rights rather than welfare, Stalin wrote, “The financial assistance given by this Stalin to the women of Tamil Nadu is a pledge, it is their right.
No matter who creates obstacles, I will not step back from it.
Citing the election, they are trying to block the entitlement amount for three months. But our #DravidianModel government has pre-empted it! As advance payment for February, March, and April – ₹3,000 + a summer special package of ₹2,000!
₹5,000 has been credited this morning to all 1.31 crore beneficiaries of the Kalaignar Women’s Entitlement Scheme.
With the support of #Winning_Tamil_Women, we will continue to win! In #DravidianModel 2.0, we will increase the ₹1,000 entitlement amount to ₹2,000 and provide it!
This is the promise that this Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin gives to my sisters!”

Tamilisai Soundararajan Slams Announcement

Former Telangana Governor and BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan strongly criticised the Chief Minister’s remarks and the timing of the disbursal, issuing a detailed response on X.

She wrote, “I strongly condemn @CMOTamilnadu @mkstalin for commenting that he has announced the women’s rights grants ahead because the central government is trying to block it… he has the habit of blaming Central Government for all his failures… I want to remind him that even during the parliament election it was not blocked… And if at all any decision it should be from the election commission not from the central government.”

Questioning the motive behind the payout, she added, “Tamil Nadu CM announcing this because of the election fear and fever. @arivalayam is not confident of winning because of the high anti-incumbency prevailing in Tamil Nadu.”

She further linked the scheme’s implementation to central financial infrastructure, stating, “I want to add they are very proud that more than 90 lakh women got it overnight in their accounts… for this TN CM should compliment and thank our Honorable @PMOIndia who initiated #jandhan accounts and #digital India.”

Highlighting central schemes, she said, “Honorable @narendramodi jis #Mudhra loans has benefited more than 1 crore women in Tamilnadu which has made them entrepreneurs and self-reliant women.”

Soundararajan also criticised the state government’s liquor policy and debt levels, “Announcing incentive for women and not taking any action on #TASMAC is highly condemnable because one survey says a family with the person who is alcoholic is spending more than 6000 rupees per month on liquor TASMAC.”

“Tamil Nadu government has increased debt from 4.5 lakh crore to 9.5 lakh crore… which indicates debt on a single tamilian 1.4 lakhs and on interest 40,000 …”

She further stated policy imitation and electoral timing, “Already the former chief minister @EPSTamilNadu has announced 2000 which Tamil Nadu CM is copying now.”

Citing a past ministerial remark, she added. “Last year when a press person asked DMK minister why they did not give Pongal incentive the minister answered if you give this year the people will forget so we will provide it in the next year and they did it … All these indicates.. @mkstalin is announcing because of election fear and fever.”

With the next Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, political parties have begun early preparations, and the BJP has started discussions on candidates for important seats.

The National Democratic Alliance is also fortifying its side of the team for the elections in the state.

According to reports published by Chanakyaa, former BJP leader and former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan is likely to be fielded from the politically significant Mylapore Assembly constituency on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance. The move, if confirmed, would mark her return to active electoral politics in Tamil Nadu from one of Chennai’s most high-profile seats.

The report indicates that discussions are under way within the BJP on projecting Tamilisai as the NDA’s face in Mylapore, a constituency known for its cultural prominence and electoral visibility.

In a parallel development, Chanakyaa reported that senior BJP leader Professor Raama Sreenivasan has expressed his readiness to contest from the Thirupparankundram Assembly constituency as an NDA candidate. Party sources said the proposal has been communicated internally and is being examined as part of the alliance’s broader seat-planning exercise.

A political confrontation erupted in Tamil Nadu after Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s comments on a recently held “Knowledge Festival” drew a sharp rebuttal from BJP leader and former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. The exchange has quickly intensified into a public war of words, with both leaders accusing each other of arrogance and political insecurity.

What Udhayanidhi Said

Speaking at an event, Udhayanidhi said, “A person with wisdom organizes a knowledge festival. During that knowledge festival, when we criticize them, they get angry, just like a thief fears the police… just hearing the word ‘knowledge’ shocks them.”

His comments were widely circulated on social media, drawing applause from DMK supporters but criticism from opponents.

Tamilisai Responds: “Don’t Be Arrogant”

Reacting to his statements, Tamilisai Soundararajan launched a direct attack on the Deputy Chief Minister’s political rise and credibility.

She said, “This morning I saw Udhayanidhi’s interview. He was speaking on TV, saying only knowledgeable people organize knowledge festivals, that those who lack knowledge need not worry about it. So, is Udhayanidhi claiming to be wise? Did you become the Deputy Chief Minister because you are wise? You became Deputy Chief Minister by inheritance. Don’t be arrogant!”

She further said, “Mr. Udhayanidhi, don’t be arrogant. You organized the knowledge festival, gave it a big name, and now you’re speaking as if you alone are knowledgeable, and others are not. Don’t be arrogant. Just intellect alone doesn’t make you Deputy Chief Minister.”

Countering Udhayanidhi’s ‘Thief and Police’ Analogy

Udhayanidhi’s analogy, linking critics of the festival to thieves who fear the police, also came under attack.

She added, “He had said only thieves fear the police—fear comes to a thief when he sees the police. That’s why, when they see us, they’re afraid.”

Tamilisai shot back: “I’ll turn that statement back: Why are you afraid of the SIR (Special Investigation Report/list)? You are afraid because you’re involved in vote theft. That’s why you fear the SIR.”

She went further, alleging electoral malpractice: “How did you win before? You yourself admit that you won using fake voters.”

Following reports that Tamil Nadu Congress State President and Sriperumbudur MLA K. Selvaperunthagai was allegedly barred by temple authorities from taking part in the kumbhabhishekam ceremony at the Vallakottai Murugan Temple in Kancheepuram, senior BJP leader and former governor Tamilisai Soundararajan who was present at the event released a detailed statement clarifying what occurred.

In her nuanced explanation, Tamilisai emphasized that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding and denied any suggestion of caste-based discrimination at the temple.

Previously speaking to the media, Selvaperunthagai remarked, “This issue has persisted for 2000 years; it can’t be resolved overnight. I pray that no harm comes to our Chief Minister, who tirelessly works 24 hours a day for good governance, nor to the Minister of the Hindu Religious & Endowments Department, who is doing an even better job than the devotional movements. As a devotee I stood other devotees, I couldn’t even see the deity, but everyone else managed to have a glimpse.

On 9 July 2025, Tamilisai Soundararajan responded to the controversy surrounding the Vallakottai Murugan temple consecration, denying allegations of caste-based discrimination. She emphasized that the issue arose from security protocols and the entitled behavior of certain individuals (Selvaperunthagai), not social exclusion. Describing her own visit, she highlighted how she humbly joined the public without seeking special treatment (despite she was former governor), unlike others who, she implied, demanded privileged access due to their official positions. Tamilisai criticized the politicization of the event, stating that devotion should take precedence over power or status. She condemned those twisting the incident into a caste issue, asserting that Lord Murugan would bless genuine devotion not arrogance disguised as victimhood.

Tamilisai Soundararajan via her official X account stated, “My Appan Murugan, Thiruchendur Murugan’s consecration ceremony. I wished to have a darshan of my appan in Thiruchendur. I felt that the strictness of the ‘Sekars’ outweighed the arrangements made by the ‘Irai Sevagargal’ (divine servants). The Sekars’ self-promotion seemed to overshadow the devotion of the Sevagargal. I heard about a consecration ceremony at Valla Kottai and decided that wherever it was, it was still my lord. I concluded that my lord was calling me there. As a devotee, I stopped my car a kilometer before and reached the temple with the general public. I climbed the steps with devotion. I arrived two hours early and waited among the common people. No special seating was offered to me, nor did I ask for any, like the ‘Mutharasars’ grumble about. I stood and waited as a devotee of Murugan.

I asked if I could go up. They said, ‘If it’s just you, come.’ I left everyone who came with me and went up alone. Even after climbing, I stood there for half an hour as a devotee of Murugan. Some people arrived late, in a hurry, not as devotees, but carrying their positions on their shoulders. They said I couldn’t go up alone and that those who came with me should also go. ‘This is Murugan’s consecration stage, not a political stage,’ they said, ‘for security reasons, only he should go up.’ The one carrying his position insisted that everyone should go up asking do you know who we are? Disregarding the safety of others, two or three of them climbed up arrogantly.

The consecration ceremony proceeded well. After that, to witness the special darshan, I joined the crowd as a devotee among the general public and sat in front of Murugan. I waited with the public, and Murugan also waited. They were waiting for the esteemed official to arrive. Time kept passing, but the high-ranking official didn’t come. When asked why, they said he was waiting for the special gate to be opened. Murugan waited, the devotees waited, and the esteemed individual (Perunthaigayalar), with his retinue of assistants, waited for the special gate to open. Apparently, he got angry and left because the special gate was delayed in opening.

However, what transpired there was an expression of devotion, but it was wrongly proclaimed as an expression of caste. But some ‘Ravikumars‘ twisting this into an act of atrocity and arrogantly wounding the public darshan, as if to say, ‘Should I stand as one among ten?’ is strongly condemnable. The high-ranking official Perunthagai has apparently asked, ‘When women are allowed, why can’t I go?’ So, what happened there was not an atrocity but an injustice against a woman, but I did not vocalize this because I went there only for worship. I did not perceive gender discrimination there, as if they were allowing other women but not me. I only saw the expression of devotion.

They say that they went to ‘Sekars’ home to apologize after they have exaggerated a non-existent problem by creating a huge fuss over a perfectly executed consecration ceremony, causing distress to devotees, and then staging a drama as if they themselves were inconvenienced. The person who spoke arrogantly saying, ‘When people wait for many hours in Tirupati, can they not wait in a temple in Tamil Nadu?’ without apologizing for the inconvenience caused to the public, have now reportedly went to the ‘Sekars” homes to apologize for a non-existent issue.

My Appan Murugan is watching all these unfolding dramas. He is smiling at those who deceive. I reiterate, I went as a devotee and worshipped with devotion. I carried devotion, not position. Those who came carrying their positions have left carrying blame. He must understand what transpired there was nothing more than the security arrangements for Kandhan’s devotees climbing the scaffolding, not a katapanchayat. The Lord of the Six Abodes is watching all these unfolding dramas! My Appan will bless those who come bearing great devotion. But what if they come bearing power and arrogance?”

Tamil Nadu BJP senior leader and former Governor of Telangana and Puducherry, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, has described the Joint Action Council (JAC) meeting convened by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin as an attempt to cover up corruption by the participating leaders.

The BJP staged a black flag protest against the meeting, criticising Stalin for not showing similar urgency in addressing critical issues such as the Cauvery and Mullaiperiyar water-sharing disputes with Karnataka and Kerala. BJP national spokesperson C.R. Kesavan said the DMK’s focus on delimitation was a diversionary tactic aimed at deflecting attention from what he termed as the “corrupt, failed, and disastrous misrule” of the DMK government.

“DMK’s divisive politics of fear-mongering, and its attempts to mislead and misinform the public, will backfire,” Kesavan said. “Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, with their contradictory and opportunistic stance on delimitation, are engaging in a deeply condemnable form of politics.” The first Joint Action Council meeting on ‘Fair Delimitation’ began in Chennai on Saturday, chaired by Chief Minister Stalin.

The meeting saw participation from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and representatives from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and the Congress. Although invited, West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) did not send a representative. This JAC meeting is the latest step in Stalin’s broader outreach, which began with an all-party conference in Tamil Nadu on 5 March 2025.

That meeting brought together 58 registered political parties —excluding the BJP — who set aside ideological differences to form a united front against the proposed delimitation exercise scheduled for 2026. The DMK and its allies argue that the proposed delimitation poses a threat to India’s federal structure. They contend that it will disproportionately reduce political representation for southern and eastern states — regions that have outperformed others in population control, economic development, healthcare, education, and social welfare.

Despite Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent assurance in Coimbatore that southern states would not lose even a single parliamentary seat, the Tamil Nadu government proceeded with the JAC meeting. The DMK dismissed Shah’s comments, made during a public rally and not in an official forum, as non-binding and lacking legal weight. “The delimitation process, as it currently stands, threatens the very foundation of Indian federalism,” Stalin warned in a video message on 21 March 2025.

“States that have responsibly managed population growth and contributed significantly to national development must not be penalised. Such a move would erode the essence of democracy,” he said.

In yet another tirade by DMK members, senior leader RS Bharathi has once again made disparaging remarks about TN BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan.

Addressing a public gathering in Puducherry, RS Bharathi said, “You know the one who speaks a lot, she says if you drink cow urine, cancer will be cured. She is a qualified doctor and the intellectual genius says that if you drink cow urine, cancer can be cured. How did you qualify for MBBS? Did you get the seat by scoring marks? My dearest leader Kalaignar helped you get a seat in the medical college in a quota because your father Kumari Ananthan because he was a Tamil scholar. In the quota given to you by Kalaignar, because he was a Tamil scholar, you were able to study to be a doctor, and now you are getting signatures for 3 language policy, what should I beat you up with? Do the people of Tamil Nadu have no feelings or sense? A few of us are still alive. During the 1965 anti-Hindi protests I was studying in a Christian college. We passed SSLC in 1964. There are people like Durai Murugan and Gopalsamy who participated in the struggle in 1964, and only four or five people like us are alive. Those who saw all this, to what extent, how much atrocities have happened in this country, how big a struggle has it been. Today, you say we will implement the three-language policy here, and I don’t care who collects these signatures. Annamalai can also collect it. He didn’t study properly, so I don’t care. But if Tamilisai who studied under the Tamil quota is collecting these signatures, we have to narrate history.”

He further added, “Young speakers like them have come here. From now on, it is them who has to pass this on to the younger generation. Many people don’t know the dangers. Even here, those who spoke before, it is not only about Hindi, but also the NEP – the so-called National Educational Policy has some very cruel conditions. It is not only about hereditary/ancestral education. They will conduct exams in 3rd standard itself, if you fail, you have to leave the school. They will conduct exams in 5th grade, if you fail you have to graze cows. This law has been brought to destroy our education and our knowledge. This was also there during the Congress period, before 1967. When we were studying, we wrote an exam called ESLC, in the eighth standard. The younger generation today does not know all this. After studying everything and getting a degree, they immediately think that they have studied and achieved because of their family and gotra pride. They think that we have studied and come because of pride. We need to understand who is responsible for this education. If we say that DMK does not exist, if we say that there is no such being as Kalaignar, then no one would have studied in Tamil Nadu. They will conduct an exam in the eighth standard. If they fail, they will not be able to go to the ninth standard. They have to leave it and come back. They have to work in the grocery store or work at a mechanic shop and change tyres.”

This is not the first time that RS Bharathi has made such derogatory statements against anyone. Here is a list of what he said in the past.

Against Judges

Speaking at a public meeting recently, he has openly derogated Brahmins. He recollected the incidents around former CM Karunanidhi’s death and how his body was buried at Marina Beach alongside other former Chief Ministers after a legal battle. While doing so, he claimed that the judge hearing the case was not a Brahmin and implied that had it been one, Karunanidhi would not have been buried where he is now.

He said, “Karunanidhi told us to bury him near Annadurai. When he (Karunanidhi) passed away, Thalapathy Stalin said that he should pursue the case in court himself. Continuing the case, Thalapathy accepted Kalaignar’s order and gave him a six-foot plot of land in Chennai through the court. Fortunately, had that judge had been a Brahmin (shows janeu/sacred thread with hand gestures), we would not have gotten it. Fortunately, he is one of us. I don’t delve deeper into this. Then the judge said at 11 pm, if you can somehow go and get this writ petition numbered in the High Court and send a notice to the government, I will hear this case in court at night itself.”

RS Bharathi has made derogatory statements about judges earlier.

He was arrested in May 2021 by the Central Crime Branch of the Chennai city police in May 2020 for allegedly making inflammatory remarks at a party meeting in February. In his speech, Bharati reportedly said that it was only because of the Dravidian movement’s alms (pichchai) that Dalits were able to become judges in Tamil Nadu. Referring to a judge, he reportedly said that many Dalits were inducted into the judiciary because of the indulgence of the DMK leadership during former chief minister M Karunanidhi’s tenure.

Speaking at an event in Anbagam (the DMK youth wing headquarters), in February 2020, he said “If Tamil Nadu remains the best state, it is because of the Dravidian movement. No Harijan has become a judge of the High Court in Madhya Pradesh. After Karunanidhi became Chief Minister A Varadarajan was appointed as HC judge. Seven or eight others from the Adi Dravidar community went on to become judges after that. It is the alms (picchai) given by the Dravidian Movement”. He later issued an apology for his remarks.

Insulting Political Leaders

EPS

During an event in Ambattur, Chennai in 2021, DMK leader RS Bharathi made derogatory remarks about the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Edappadi Palaniswami. He said, “He has forgotten with whose help, this dog, this man sat on the CM’s chair. Those who kick the ladder that they used for climbing up have never met a good end. I would say even MGR is also like that. MGR was nurtured and made into a leader by this movement. But you know what happened when he betrayed. He passed away without being able to speak.”.

Making Derogatory Remarks On Jayalalithaa

He also made disrespectful comments about J. Jayalalithaa, implying that he was responsible for sending her to jail in the TANSI case, and even suggested speaking to her from her memorial. He said, “Go wake her up from the samadhi [memorial] and ask”. He also added, “Recently, Jayalalithaa’s memorial hall was opened on January 27. They gave ₹40,000 per bus from all over Tamil Nadu. They gave ₹2000 to those who boarded the bus. They picked them up and dropped them off at Marina Beach. Edappadi and OPS thought that the whole crowd would come to the Jayalalithaa memorial. But the crowd thought, instead of visiting that ‘moodhevi’ (a derogatory slang in Tamil), they visited Kalaignar’s [Karunanidhi’s] memorial”.

Governor Also Like Bihari Panipuri Sellers

In January 2023, at a public meeting, he compared the Governor to a migrant worker from Bihar and said that he would not have left without being beaten had Jayalalitha been alive. “I had earlier stated that those who sell Soan papdi and Panipuri don`t know the pride of Tamil Nadu. I said this in a meeting. I came to know that many have come from Bihar and I think the Governor (RN Ravi) has similarly come by train,”.

Insults Kamarajar

In October 2022, RS Bharati at an event said, “Supreme Leader Kamaraj said he would cut off the thumb of DMK members. But it was us who built his grave. No Congressmen did that. To date, everyone is worshiping in the grave we built for Kamaraj.” “I’m sorry. I’m just telling history. I don’t mean to hurt anyone,” he said.

Mocks MGR

In March 2024, at a DMK event in Salavakkam, RS Bharati mocked MGR’s final speech and linking it to his death. RS Bharathi said, The last speech was when he said that he would ban the DMK. His arms and legs were paralysed, he was admitted to Apollo, and remained speechless and gone. I want Modi to understand this and that is why I am reminding him of it.

“Today Even A Dog Gets A BA Degree”

In July 2024, he stated that even a dog could obtain a BA degree due to the Dravidian movement. Speaking at a DMK Students Wing protest against NEET, he criticized the exam’s irregularities and credited the movement for expanding education access while accusing the Modi government of evasion.

RS Bharathi said, “I am a lawyer B.L educated. Ezhilarasan BE, BL. All these did not come from clan or gotra. If it was not for the alms of the Dravidian movement and communal GO, so many doctors and so many people with B.E degrees would not have come. When I studied BA, only one person in the town had studied BA. Then they will write the title on the name board outside the house. Now everyone in the town is studying for a degree, even a dog is getting a BA degree. Dravidian movement is responsible for this development.”

North Indians Are Fools

At a meeting (in an undated video), Bharathi is seen saying, “The reason why Tamil Nadu is the best state in India is because of the DMK. The people in the other states are fools, they have no brains, these north Indians, I am saying this openly.”

Says Bihar & UP People Eat Chapati Kurma At Amma Canteen

During a party meeting in Chennai in September 2024, RS Bharathi questioned the relevance of Amma Unavagam, the late Jayalalithaa’s pet project. He asked about the need for a low-cost meal scheme after her death and accused AIADMK leaders of exploiting it.

He also claimed that only the north Indian workers benefited from Amma Unavagam on Tamil Nadu taxpayers’ money.

During his speech, Bharathi criticized AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), dismissing claims that the DMK government had closed Amma Unavagam. He said, “Amma (Jayalalithaa) herself has left (died), then what is the need for Amma Unavagam? Edappadi and his gang ate idli and dosa for one and a half crore rupees while Amma (Jayalalithaa) was in the hospital. Now they are acting like the DMK has shut down Amma Unavagam, where just about 150 people eat daily,” Bharathi remarked.

Bharathi also attacked the Jayalalithaa government’s management of Amma Unavagam, alleging that “wasted food” was served there. He said, “The Jayalalithaa government served leftover food in Amma Unavagam. The chapati and kuruma served at night in Amma Unavagam are consumed by people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. We spend our tax money and feed him,” said RS Bharathi.

Called Media As ‘Redlight’ Media

In February 2020, in a video widely shared on social media, the DMK leader is heard asking why the media had made a matter of debate about his party employing political strategist Prashant Kishor. In a four-minute video clip that went viral, Bharathi can be heard saying: “I am silent because I am in this party post of organising secretary. These journalists don’t have a job. They only blame us. (Arvind) Kejriwal used Prashant Kishor, Narendra Modi used him and many others used him. But they discuss only when the DMK is using him and now it has become a debate. I say it openly that these TV journalists are real scoundrels. They run debates like red-light area in Mumbai. They do anything for money. ‘Thalapathy’ (MK Stalin) goes to temples, but that doesn’t become a debate, people in his house go to a temple, and they discuss it. Is it very important for the country?”

DMK spokesperson and joint secretary of the party’s media wing, Saravanan Annadurai, has come under intense criticism following a controversial post on his official X account, where he made a derogatory and salacious remark directed at senior BJP leader and former Telangana Governor, Tamilisai Soundararajan.

Saravanan’s remarks came after Tamilisai welcomed the statements made by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay, who recently launched a direct attack on the ruling DMK. On Women’s Day, Vijay criticized the alarming rise in crimes against women in Tamil Nadu and held the DMK government responsible. Addressing the media in Madurai, Tamilisai supported Vijay’s stance, stating, “Brother Vijay has rightly said that DMK is a party that should be removed from Tamil Nadu, and that is our position too.

Annoyed by this development, Saravanan Annadurai—who has previously been busted for spreading misinformation to defend the DMK—made a derogatory comment against Tamilisai Soundararajan. In his post, he mockingly questioned, “Is he a ‘theme partner’ or a ‘sleeping partner’? It would be nice if this was clarified as well.”

Following severe backlash, Saravanan deleted the post, but the damage had already been done. TN BJP State Secretary SG Suryah condemned the statement, demanding an apology and calling out DMK MP Kanimozhi, who frequently speaks on women’s rights, for her silence on the issue.

TN BJP State Secretary SG Suryah via his official X account stated, “DMK, the monsters of humanity. DMK, an immoral movement with minimal civility and petty politics. It is unacceptable to insult BJP women leaders, especially the respected @DrTamilisai4BJP, who has held the highest responsibility given by the Constitution. If you respectfully apologize for the mistake you made, your honor will be saved Mr.@saravofcl! What is the women rights activist sister @KanimozhiDMK going to say to this? Is it silence as usual?”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tamil Nadu unit has begun organizing public meetings across all districts of Tamil Nadu from 12 February to 15 February 2025 to explain the key aspects of the central government’s 2025-2026 budget.

BJP State Vice President Karu Nagarajan announced that these meetings will be led by BJP district leaders and held in major cities across the state. The first session took place on Wednesday, 12 February 2025 in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. BJP State President K. Annamalai and former State President Tamilisai Soundararajan addressed the gathering. In her speech at this event, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan spoke about DMK MP Kanimozhi’s actions before the parliamentary elections, particularly regarding her stance on Periyar and the political landscape in Tamil Nadu.

According to the Tamilisai, Kanimozhi, who was contesting in Thoothukudi, allegedly replaced an image of Periyar on her Twitter profile with a palm tree the day before the election. Tamilisai questioned whether this move signified a shift in priorities and accused her of undermining Periyar’s legacy for electoral gains. Kanimozhi thought that the palm tree would get more votes than Periyar, and now they are talking about respect for his legacy, she said. The controversy follows earlier criticisms where Kanimozhi reportedly claimed, If you speak wrongly about Periyar, you will not get votes.”

Tamilisai also contrasted Tamil Nadu’s political discourse and the broader national narrative. All the state parliamentarians are talking about development. Only those from this state are talking about Sanskrit and Hindu identity, she remarked. She also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Tamil-language Thaipusam greetings as an example of national inclusivity, juxtaposing it with the DMK’s alleged neglect of Tamil cultural representation.

Further, the speech took a strong stance against the DMK, accusing its members of using the party flag as a shield for criminal activities. Today, we are looking at the criminals who waved the DMK flag for all the robberies happening in this country. If the DMK flag is used, it becomes a license, Tamilisai charged. The budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, a Tamil woman, was praised as abudget for the common people. Respected Nirmala Sitharaman, a Tamil woman, presented the budget in Parliament for the eighth time in a row. People from Tamil Nadu should garland the Prime Minister for this, she stated. The argument was made that Tamil Nadu should recognize and appreciate the representation of Tamil women in national politics, asserting that the BJP was providing opportunities for them.

The speech concluded with a call for political change, suggesting that the DMK’s dominance in Tamil Nadu was waning. This sister and brother (referring to Annamalai) are sending Stalin home together. The saffron flag should fly in Tamil Nadu, she declared. Tamilisai also invoked historical political shifts, drawing parallels between past electoral outcomes and the present scenario. See if you like it or not, I am telling you, brother Annamalai, this Bharatiya Janata Party is equal to our life, she asserted. She added, “Anna is not the one who propagated Tamil, it was Andal. It was not Periyar who propagated Tamil, it was Periyalwar and one must understand it was not Periyar who did it.” She also reaffirmed her undying support for the BJP, advocating for the party’s expansion in Tamil Nadu and calling for greater recognition of Tamil cultural figures.

Since actor Vijay’s first conference for the TVK on 27 October 2024, the political landscape has intensified, as the new party has emerged and he indirectly labeled the DMK as a political adversary, directly attacking it. While the DMK’s allies have been cautious in their responses, senior leaders from the party have commented, yet prominent figures like party chief MK Stalin remain silent.

TVK’s entry into the political arena appears to complicate the vote share for the Dravidian major more than for any other party, as they all operate under similar ideologies. Below are some comments from various political leaders on this development.

BJP

H Raja

BJP State Coordinator H. Raja addressed the press at the Erode BJP office, stating that the party’s relationship with TVK or Vijay will not significantly impact the BJP. However, he noted that it could have repercussions for the Dravidian parties.

H. Raja said, “Ideologically we believe in nationalism point of view but he is a Dravidian stock who speaks about separatism so our vote bank will not be affected.” When the press questioned him about declaring him as part of the Dravidian stock, Raja responded, “What’s the doubt about it? He is part of the Dravidian stock. Therefore, if you ask whose votes he might split, it would be the Dravidian stocks vote, because of that only the DMK could ultimately weaken,” he continued, “He should say more such as ‘union government’ should speak of Dravidian stocks, he should erect more EVR hoardings. I wish that and I hope Vijay would help me by speaking more about Dravidian Stock split the vote and help us.”

Tamilisai Soundararajan

Speaking to a private TV news channel Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “First of all, I want to congratulate his new party and the same time I extend my best wishes to his fans and cadres. However, we can’t consider him as a strong opposition party with a solid ideology; it feels more like watching a movie.” She continued, “He has declared Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to be a political enemy and has opposed them severely. In that regard, I believe this as a healthy situation, especially as corruption has become rampant, there is dynasty rule and people are being cheated. He implicitly positions himself as an ideological adversary of the BJP, but I think there’s some justification in saying his perspective is flawed.”

She cited examples like the NEET examination, where government students without reservations have secured medical seats. She also criticized his two-language policy, pointing out that his own movie is being released in multiple languages. She argued that Vijay’s view of the central government as a disruptive force is misguided, especially considering that people have voted for the BJP for the third time and that 2.7 million minorities have joined the party. Thus, she concluded that his perspective on the BJP is flawed.

Then she praised Vijay’s principles, such as, “Declaring we worship God and atheism is not our policy, Similarly, paid tribute to all the freedom fighters, proudly mentioned the palm tree, said that we will declare Padhaneer as state drink, said that we will fight against corruption, all this is a healthy atmosphere.”

DMK & Its Alliance

Regupathy

The DMK appeared to be the most affected by the TVK conference, especially since Vijay indirectly referred to the DMK as a “Dravidian model” government. In response, Law Minister Regupathy remarked that TVK’s ideology was merely a “xerox copy” of the DMK’s.

Regupathy said, “It is evident from the xerox copy of their announcement yesterday that the principles of the Dravida model government cannot be removed from the people.  They have given some explanation of our principles. As of now we have seen the political parties A team and B team, they are BJP’s C team.”

RS Bharathi

DMK organizing secretary R.S. Bharathi compared the party to a banyan tree in response to Vijay’s remarks. “There’s a Tamil proverb that says the tree that bears fruit gets stoned. We can endure any attacks directed at us,” he said, addressing Vijay’s indirect criticism of the DMK. On the criticisms aimed at the Dravidian model of governance, he noted that several people, including the Governor, have spoken out against it, adding, “We are not concerned about that.”

Later in the day, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin declined to comment on Vijay’s speech, stating he hadn’t seen it. However, earlier, he mentioned he “greets” Vijay when asked about him. “I’ll respond after I’ve had a chance to watch his speech,” he told reporters following the conclusion of the TVK meeting.

Congress

Selvaperunthagai

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai refrained from directly criticizing or welcoming a recent statement of actor Vijay, opting instead a cautious approach. During a press conference at the airport, he indicated that they should “wait and watch” to see how the situation unfolds. He said, “Naturally change is inevitable everywhere, the BJP rule will change. Change is the only constant, and everyone knows this; it’s nothing new.” Then to comments that Vijay is a child that can play with politics the snake Selvaperunthagai replied, in response to comments that referred to Vijay as a child playing with snake (politics), Selvaperunthagai said, “When we were young, we were playing by catching the snakes. I will share my thoughts after I see what he has said, opinion and the direction he is taking.”

VCK – Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi

In the meantime, leaders from DMK’s ally VCK expressed differing opinions. Party general secretary and Villupuram MP D. Ravikumar suggested that judging a movie by its trailer is premature, indicating that it’s too soon to determine if Vijay will follow through on his statements.

Conversely, VCK deputy general secretary Aadhav Arjuna noted that his party’s stance on power-sharing is gaining traction across the state and praised actor Vijay’s comments on the matter.

Seeman – Naam Tamilar Katchi

Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) Coordinator Seeman addressed the media in Madurai, sated, “If Vijay claims that Dravidianism and Tamil nationalism are like two eyes, that directly contradicts our philosophy. Dravidian and Tamil Nationalism are not the same. They are fundamentally different. This is about the politics of my country and my nation, focused on Tamil national politics. While Vijay shares some of our views, we have notable disagreements.”

Our conflict lies in language policy. For us, Tamil is our mother tongue, the medium of study, and the language of instruction. Other languages can be learned, if necessary, but we cannot prioritize them over Tamil.

In a recent statement, BJP Tamil Nadu State Secretary Ashvathaman strongly criticized Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan for his remarks about former Tamil Nadu Governor and present BJP TN leader Tamilisai Soundararajan and his party’s alleged behaviour towards women.

Soundararajan had pointed out that Thirumavalavan paid tribute to Kamaraj at a memorial instead of Mahatma Gandhi on the latter’s birth anniversary. She remarked, Thirumavalavan went to pay tribute to Kamaraj instead of Gandhi. Perhaps he avoided it due to a guilty conscience that his party’s policies don’t align with Gandhi’s principles.”

In response, Thirumavalavan fired back during his speech at the conference, explaining that he had intended to pay tribute to Gandhi but could not due to the Governor’s visit. The police informed me that I could only pay my respects to Gandhi after the Governor had done so. Since the conference was about to start, I placed the garland meant for Gandhi on Kamaraj’s statue and left, Thirumavalavan clarified.

However, he didn’t stop there, accusing Soundararajan of insinuating about his habits. What Tamilisai is trying to say is that Thirumavalavan is a man who can open a bottle every day. Sister Tamilisai, I hope you don’t drink. I hope you don’t have a drinking habit. Like you, I don’t have that habit, he added pointedly.

Ashvathaman stated that Thirumavalavan misrepresented Soundararajan’s comments about alcohol prohibition policies. He stated that while Soundararajan had questioned the difference between Thirumavalavan’s and Mahatma Gandhi’s stance on prohibition, she never made personal allegations about Thirumavalavan’s drinking habits.

The BJP leader accused Thirumavalavan of crude speech unbefitting of a political leader, particularly in his treatment of women. Ashvathaman cited recent incidents, including the alleged mistreatment of a female police inspector at a VCK conference in Ulundurpettai, Kallakurichi district, and an attack on a BJP member’s family in Bhuvangiri, Pondicherry, allegedly by VCK members.

Ashvathaman also referenced a controversial statement previously made by Thirumavalavan about women, which had sparked outrage in Tamil Nadu.

The BJP secretary called on Thirumavalavan to publicly apologize to the women of Tamil Nadu for his recent comments, which Ashvathaman deemed disrespectful and unbecoming of Tamil culture.
