Over a decade after being arrested in multiple sexual harassment cases filed by students, Professor Anand Viswanath, a retired academic who once headed the Economics Department at Government College, Munnar, has been acquitted of all charges. The Thodupuzha Additional Sessions Court, in its ruling, observed that he was falsely implicated following an incident in which he caught students committing malpractice during an examination.

Viswanath (61), who also served as the additional chief superintendent of examinations at the college, had been chargesheeted in four separate cases in which women students alleged he sexually harassed them during the M.A. Economics second semester examinations held between August and September 2014.

In 2021, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at Devikulam sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment in two cases, while acquitting him in the other two. He was subsequently suspended from service. Challenging the conviction, he approached the Thodupuzha Sessions Court, which has now overturned the verdicts and acquitted him in all cases.

Court’s Observations

Judge Laijumol Sherif, who delivered the verdict, said the testimonies of the four students were riddled with contradictions, omissions, and embellishments. These inconsistencies were not corroborated by evidence from independent witnesses. The court held that while the testimonies were insufficient to prove the allegations, they were strong enough to demonstrate that the professor had been falsely implicated.

The court also noted that “no action was taken on the malpractice of the four students, and instead there occurred a conspiracy at the party office of the CPI(M) to rope in the professor.”

The Malpractice Incident

According to court records, Viswanath had caught five students, said to be activists of the CPI(M)’s student wing, the SFI, copying during the postgraduate examination in 2014. He reported the matter to the invigilator and handed over the seized manuscripts. However, his complaint was allegedly suppressed following political intervention. One month later, the same students lodged complaints with the Education Minister and the State Women’s Commission, accusing him of sexual harassment.

This led to the registration of four separate FIRs, resulting in four charge sheets and four trials, with the same group of students alternating between roles as victims and witnesses in different cases.

Defence Arguments

Advocate S. Ashokan, appearing for Viswanath, pointed out that the prosecution failed to produce any independent witnesses and did not even examine the invigilator present during the exams. “In all the cases, the same girls were the witnesses. If one of the girls was listed as a victim in a case, the others were made witnesses. In the other cases, their roles were interchanged. The court has rightly found that these cases were politically motivated,” he said.

The Professor’s Ordeal

For Viswanath, the acquittal comes after more than a decade of personal and professional turmoil. “For the last 11 years, I had to face humiliation. I was forced to send my daughter and son for higher secondary education in Tamil Nadu due to these cases. After the FIRs were registered, I went into hiding for a month fearing arrest, and returned home only after getting anticipatory bail,” he said.

Following his suspension, he was transferred first to Malappuram and later to Chittoor in Palakkad. He retired from service in 2021 but continues to receive only 75% of his pension due to the departmental inquiry initiated against him in connection with the cases.

Viswanath also filed a complaint against the college principal, alleging that he had conspired to falsely implicate him and suspend him from service. While an FIR was registered, the police later closed the matter. He has now challenged the closure report in court.

A protest by the left-wing student organization, Students’ Federation of India (SFI), at Dharmambal Government Polytechnic for Women in Taramani turned chaotic when students clashed with the police. Viral footage from the incident shows SFI protestors grabbing police officers by their collars and shirts.

The demonstration was sparked by allegations that a female student had been gang-raped by seven individuals. Reports suggest that after learning of the incident, the college administration issued a transfer certificate to the student and sent her away instead of supporting her. In response, SFI organized a protest, demanding justice for the victim.

During the protest, tensions escalated as students attempted to lay siege to the principal’s office. A scuffle broke out between the students and the police, leading to physical altercations from both sides.

Allegations And Investigation

It is alleged that the student had developed a relationship with a man named Rajesh through Instagram. Rajesh reportedly coerced her into handing over her jewelry and later took her to an undisclosed location, where she was sexually assaulted. On the night of 20 March, the student left her hostel and returned the following day.

Reports claim that Rajesh and his associate, Jayakumar, assaulted the victim while under the influence of alcohol. The incident has been reported to the authorities, and the Taramani police have launched an investigation. However, instead of taking action against the alleged perpetrators, it is reported that the college administration expelled the victim and two others accompanied the victim in the case.

Uncertainty remains about whether the student was indeed gang-raped or if other circumstances led to her dismissal. The police have yet to issue a clear statement on the matter.

SFI strongly condemned the college’s decision, accusing the administration of victim-blaming rather than ensuring justice. The student group demanded accountability and fair treatment for the affected student, criticizing the authorities for their alleged inaction. The protest, however, escalated into a violent confrontation with the police, further intensifying the controversy surrounding the case.

A confrontation broke out at South Asian University (SAU) in New Delhi between two student groups, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), over food choices in the university’s mess.

The altercation began when ABVP members requested the mess to serve sattvic food, as several students were fasting for Maha Shivratri. They accused members of the left-wing student group of attempting to disrupt the religious atmosphere on campus.

In response, SFI members allegedly attempted to serve non-vegetarian food in the mess area designated for fasting students.

The situation escalated when a video surfaced online showing a woman student being allegedly assaulted at the university. SFI blamed ABVP for the incident, while ABVP claimed that leftist students intentionally tried to create disharmony over religious issues.

The Delhi Police confirmed that the victim is undergoing medical examination and stated that they are verifying the details. According to the police, the incident, which occurred on February 26, began with a disagreement over food between the two groups and eventually led to a physical altercation. The victim reportedly called the police through a PCR.

Tensions flared at an NCC camp held at KMM College, Thrikkakara, around 24 December 2024, as allegations surfaced against Kerala SFI leader Bhagyalakshmi for inappropriate conduct and harassment of cadets, including female participants. The accusations arose following a heated altercation involving Bhagyalakshmi, an SFI district secretariat member, and the cadets.

According to the cadets, Bhagyalakshmi, accompanied by a group of individuals, allegedly trespassed into the Kerala NCC camp, searched their barracks, and made inappropriate remarks. One female cadet reported that Bhagyalakshmi questioned them with sexual undertones, asking, “Are you here to offer yourselves to the officers?” The remarks have caused outrage among the cadets, who expressed pride in their roles as NCC participants and condemned the alleged behavior.

Bhagyalakshmi, however, has denied the allegations, claiming that her actions were misunderstood. She stated that her visit to the camp was prompted by reports of misconduct involving higher officials. “I did not make any inappropriate remarks. As a woman, I am fully aware of the sensitivities involved and acted responsibly,” she said.

The incident reportedly occurred after several cadets were admitted to a local hospital due to suspected food poisoning. Bhagyalakshmi and her team allegedly forced their way into the camp, citing concerns over the cadets’ well-being and accusing officials of negligence.

While video footage of the altercation has been circulated, opinions remain divided. The footage shows a confrontation between Bhagyalakshmi’s group and camp officials, with cadets visibly distressed. Some cadets claimed that the intruders inspected their rooms without permission and behaved aggressively.

The controversy has escalated further as both parties continue to present conflicting narratives. Army personnel at the camp have criticized the lack of accountability and called for a formal investigation. Bhagyalakshmi maintains her innocence, asserting that her actions were in the cadets’ interest.

Additionally, CPM workers allegedly attacked Army officers during an NCC camp at KMM College in Thrikkakara. The incident occurred on the night of 23 December 2024, when a group of CPM-affiliated individuals reportedly entered the camp premises and assaulted Lieutenant Colonel Karnail Singh, the camp commandant. Despite an FIR being registered, no action has been taken by the police so far, prompting criticism from the victimized Army personnel.

The incident allegedly began after complaints of food poisoning were reported at the NCC camp. Several students experiencing discomfort were admitted to Kalamassery Medical College. Following this, a group of CPM workers reportedly stormed the camp, assaulting students and subjecting female cadets to harassment. Lieutenant Colonel Karnail Singh’s father later shared details of the attack on social media, revealing that his son, in full uniform, was assaulted while on duty.

In connection with the incident, the police registered an FIR against Bhagyalakshmi, an SFI leader and DYFI district committee member, along with others. Despite this, the accused remain at large, and the Army officers allege that the police have failed to take further steps. The officers also claim that the food poisoning incident was fabricated by some students seeking to leave the camp early for Christmas celebrations.

Despite the FIR being filed promptly on December 24, no arrests have been made, sparking further outrage among the Army personnel, who have demanded justice and immediate action from the authorities.

In yet another incident, Hari Kumar of Enikkara lodged a police complaint on 24 December 2024 after his son was taken from an NSS camp to participate in the CPM district meet’s Red Volunteer March without his consent. Kumar discovered the incident during a scheduled visit to the camp. He stated that his neighbor, Vishnu, initially called requesting the boy’s participation, which Kumar declined. Vishnu later collected the boy’s uniform under false pretenses, took him from the camp, and provided him with lunch before the march. Despite being a CPM supporter, Kumar emphasized his prior objection and plans further complaints to the child rights commission and education minister.

These recent incidents in Kerala highlight a concerning pattern of Communist organizations’ interference with youth and student programmes. Additionally, no action is taken despite complaints and FIRs being filed.

A scuffle erupted at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia institute on Tuesday night as two group of students clashed over Deepavali celebrations inside the campus.

The altercation between two groups of students occurred during rangoli-making festivities. While police have been deployed outside the university, no formal complaints have been filed by the college administration or any student regarding the clash.

University authorities claimed that the situation has been brought under control, however, the administration has not disclosed the cause of the confrontation.

A video of the incident has also gone viral on social media, showing chaos inside the campus.  A group of people are purportedly seen chanting slogans, in what appears to be a video from the Diwali festivities inside the campus. Slogans like “Allahu Akbar”, “Palestine Zindabad” were raised.

The incident took place during the annual Deepavali celebrations, conducted by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Some reports claimed that the altercation broke out after a group of students ruined the rangolis, leading to disruption in celebrations. The ABVP has condemned the college administration over inaction on errant students and demanded strict action from Delhi police.

“On Tuesday evening, during the Deepotsav program at Jamia Millia Islamia, students were chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, and the program was going on peacefully. At around 8 p.m., outsiders, religious fanatics, and anti-social elements at the venue vandalised the lamps of Deepotsav, erased the rangoli, and began attacking the Jamia students participating in the festivities,” the ABVP said in a statement in Hindi.

The Student Federation of India (SFI) also issued a statement and claimed that it was an “attack on university students by outsiders invited by the administration.” The SFI claimed that the outsiders were brought in “to create communal tension on campus,” adding that ABVP members, along with their “gang of local goons,” shouted communal slogans.

“When some university students objected to their behaviour, the outsiders, led by their state leaders, unleashed violence. Police intervened with a lathi charge, which hurt and scared many students while the actual perpetrators were protected,” the SFI claimed.

This incident is not the first such altercation at Jamia Millia Islamia. Similar clashes occurred during Holi celebrations earlier this year, with students engaging in provocative sloganeering. In May, a separate incident saw two groups clash, resulting in three individuals, including two students, being injured.

Even as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leads protests demanding justice for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G.Kar hospital, the Kolkata police are going on an arrest spree detaining demonstrators, including football fans from rival teams Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.

Kolkata Police Arrests

On 18 August 2024, Kolkata police detained several individuals after football fans from rival teams Mohun Bagan and East Bengal organised a protest against the tragic incident. The Durand Cup derby between these teams, scheduled for that day, was cancelled following intelligence reports suggesting potential violence at Salt Lake Stadium, where fans had gathered.

Earlier in the day, the police had enforced Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) outside the stadium and detained the protesting fans. Despite the derby’s cancellation and the threat of police action, the fans rallied for justice, setting aside their sports rivalries for a common cause.

On 19 August 2024, a second-year B.Com student was arrested for allegedly posting a “provocative” social media message targeting the Chief Minister. The police claim the student incited hatred and criminal behaviour by encouraging others to assassinate the CM and by allegedly sharing the victim’s identity in Instagram stories related to the case. The student faces charges under BNSS sections 351 (2), 353(1), 352 for insulting and provoking a breach of peace, and sections 72 and 79 related to insulting modesty.

Additionally, Kolkata police issued notices to seven SFI-DYFI leaders to question them about their involvement in sharing information about the case. Another notice was sent to a doctor for allegedly spreading misinformation. All parties are required to appear on 19th August.

BJP Leaders Summoned

Allegedly, to curb the unlawful disclosure of the victim’s identity and misinformation, Kolkata Police summoned two prominent doctors and a senior BJP leader to their headquarters. Former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two renowned doctors, Dr Kunal Sarkar and Dr Subarna Goswami, have been summoned for allegedly spreading rumours and revealing the victim’s identity. In total, 57 individuals have been summoned for disseminating incorrect information about the case.

Eight days after the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, protests continue unabated. Doctors, opposition parties and ordinary citizens took to the streets to demand justice. The situation was further inflamed by vandalism at the hospital.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is leading the probe, visited the Kolkata Police’s fourth battalion barrack, where the accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civil police volunteer, was stationed on the day of the crime. Roy was arrested within 12 hours of the incident on 9th August. The CBI also conducted searches at Roy’s family home in Bhawanipore and engaged a team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory to perform a psychological evaluation of the accused. Additionally, the CBI questioned Sandip Kumar Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, for the second day.

Victim’s Family Distressed

The father of the deceased doctor expressed frustration, stating, “No results have come out of the inquiry that is being done. We hope we will get results… No one from the department or the college cooperated with us. The entire department is involved in this… There were three bodies at the crematorium, but our daughter’s body was cremated first…The CM is talking about providing justice, but then attempts are being made to put the common people demanding justice in jail. We are not satisfied with the CM. We have refused to take any compensation.”

The mother of the victim recounted the distressing events, saying, “First we got a call from the hospital that your daughter is sick, then the call was disconnected. After that when I called and asked what happened, they told me to come to the hospital. When we called again, the (caller) identified himself as Assistant Super and said your daughter has committed suicide. She went to duty on Thursday, we got this call on Friday at 10:53am. When we reached there, we were not allowed to see her, we were allowed to see her at 3 o’clock. Her pants were open, there was only one piece of cloth on her body. Her hand was broken, blood was coming out of her eyes, mouth. Just by looking at her, it seemed that someone had murdered her. I told them it is not suicide, it’s a murder. We worked so hard to make our daughter a doctor but she was murdered.”

She criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s response, noting, “She (Mamata Banerjee) said that the culprit will be arrested as soon as possible, but nothing has happened so far. One person has been arrested. I am sure many more are involved in this incident. I think the entire department is responsible for the incident… The police did not do a good job at all. I feel that the Chief Minister is trying to stop the protest, today she imposed Section 144 here so that people cannot protest.” On the CP, she says, “They did not cooperate with us at all, they only tried to hush up the case as soon as possible. Their attempt was to get the post-mortem done as soon as possible and remove the body.”

In a recent incident at KMCT law college campus in Kuttippuram, Malappuram, Kerala BJP candidate Nivedida Subramanian was barred from entering by members of of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Muslim Students Federation (MSF). The incident occurred during Nivedida’s campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

According to reports, Subramanian was interacting with students on one side of the campus when she attempted to move to the other and was obstructed by SFI and MSF students who staged a protest. Despite her attempts to reason with them, she was unable to proceed and eventually left at the request of campus authorities.

The incident, captured in a viral video on social media, depicts SFI and MSF members clad in white clothing, outnumbering her. The presence of some demonstrators in burqas has also been noted, prompting criticism from netizens for what they perceive as an act of intimidation.

In response to the incident, Nivedida took to social media platform X to denounce it, asserting her party’s resilience. She wrote, “Don’t need threats and nothing, this party is different… “

The BJP has alleged a larger conspiracy behind the incident, citing a similar occurrence in Kollam where SFI students blocked NDA candidate G Krishnakumar. Despite these protests, Krishnakumar was able to address the audience.

The incident has reignited debates surrounding the activities of SFI and MSF, with the former being accused of fostering a climate of intimidation and violence, particularly in West Bengal and Kerala. MSF, as the student wing of IUML, a political organization associated with the Congress in Kerala, has also faced scrutiny.

Nivedida Subramanian entered her first electoral contest at the age of 45 in 2016 in Guruvayur. She is BJP’s candidate for Ponnani, a Muslim League stronghold, and aims to make BJP’s presence felt in Kerala. State President of BJP’s Mahila Morcha, she gained visibility for organising PM Modi’s Sthree Shakti meet in Thrissur and was also seen standing next to Modi during the Thrissur road show. Subramanian’s political journey began at age three, when she accompanied her mother, Radha Balakrishnan, and was jailed during the Emergency. Her mother served as the state president of Mahila Morcha.

In a disturbing incident from Kerala, a 20-year-old student named JS Sidharth, hailing from Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, took his own life on 18 February 2024 in Wayanad. Reports suggest that he had been subjected to severe physical and verbal abuse by left-wing student leaders, who allegedly played a role in pushing him towards suicide. Shockingly, he was reportedly paraded naked by them. Six individuals affiliated with the Student Federation of India (SFI) were apprehended on 28 February 2024 after police interrogation. The father of the deceased, Jayaprakash, has accused the SFI student leaders of murder.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Billgate Joshua, Abhishek S, Dons Daayi, Akash SD, Rahan Binoy, and Sreehari RD. Charges were previously filed against K. Arun, N. Asif Khan, SFI Unit Secretary Amal Ihsan, K. Akhil, R.S., and an official complaint was made against others.

JS Sidharth, a second-year student at the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Pookode, Wayanad, was found hanging in a college hostel toilet on 18 February 2024. The post-mortem report revealed signs of severe beating, an empty stomach, and wounds on his body, including head, jaw, and back injuries.

Following his death, the police initially registered a case of unnatural death. The college’s anti-ragging committee later suspended twelve students, including left-wing student leaders, for their involvement in brutally beating Sidharth in the days leading up to his suicide. Those arrested were not among the suspended students.

According to Sidharth’s father, his son was regularly tormented by left-wing students. The suspended SFI leaders included the college union president, a union member, and the SFI unit secretary. Sidharth’s father claimed that his son was beaten on 14 February 2024 after participating in a Valentine’s Day function. He criticized the Vythiri police for delaying action against the offenders.

The victim’s family alleges that Sidharth had bought a train ticket on 15 February 2024 but had to cancel the trip after receiving a call from a friend, after which he became unusually quiet and depressed. Sidharth’s father insisted that his son did not commit suicide but was killed and hanged. He expressed frustration over the lack of action due to the alleged political connections of the culprits.

K. Akhil, one of the primary offenders, was apprehended on February 29th from Palakkad. Opposition parties in Kerala have accused the administration of indifference to the issue. The suspects allegedly attended college until 24 February 2024, but it took a while for the police to show interest in apprehending them. Six students were eventually arrested after authorities were charged with negligence. Sajeev, leading the probe, stated that the police had charged both apprehended and absconded students under the Prohibition of Ragging Act and abetment of suicide (IPC Section 306) following the anti-ragging committee’s report.

This is not an isolated incident; just in the past year, there has been a surge in hooliganism, fraudulent degrees, electoral manipulation, and assaults on educators.

It is noteworthy that the 2024 Kerala University youth festival scheduled to take place from 7 March to 11 March 2024 has been named ‘Intifada,’ a term historically associated with militant groups like Hamas in Palestine. The choice of the name has sparked concerns about the potential promotion of Islamism and anti-Semitism, particularly due to its connection with the violent activities of Hamas against Israel.

Intifada has been a term used by Palestinian terror groups, including Hamas, to describe their campaigns of violence against Israel. The festival’s adoption of this name has raised eyebrows, questioning the appropriateness of associating an event with a term linked to terrorism.

The poster designed for the event also hints at Palestine/Hamas – the scarf pattern embedded on the Palestine map. The words also read “Against Invasion”, “Defence of Art”

A Ganapathi puja (homam) was taking place at night at the Nedumannur LP school in Kayakkody district in Kozhikode, Kerala. The puja took place at 8 pm on 13 February 2024. Villagers reached the premises after witnessing several cars outside the school. That was when they realised it was a Ganapathi homam that was taking place in the school. Around this time, members of the SFI and DYFI also reached the premises. It turned out to be a protest in a big way.

When the cadre reached, the homam/puja was underway. The cadre alleged that under the supervision of the BJP, the school manager and his son were indulging in these pujas. Subsequently, Thottilpalam police reached the premises and took the school manager into custody.

The villagers also gathered in large numbers and stopped the puja. DYFI cadre said that since these pujas are not allowed on school premises, they will intensify their protest against the manager and the ones supervising the conduct of the pujas.

It is noteworthy that the Ganapathi Pooja was conducted to mark the inauguration and Bhumi puja of the new school building. As per Hindu customs, commencing any sacred endeavour starts with the observance of Ganesha Pooja. Ganapati pooja serves as the fundamental ritual conducted to remove hindrances, mitigate difficulties, and promote prosperity.

Another important point to note is that it is crucial to acknowledge that the management of the school aligns with individuals supportive of the Congress, and the BJP had no involvement in coordinating this ceremony.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan took an unusual step to express his displeasure with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activists who allegedly attacked his car during a protest against him. Khan boldly got out of his vehicle and sat in front of a wayside shop on the busy MC Road, demanding the arrest of the activists that he claimed were being protected by the police.

The Governor left the roadside tea shop after an hour when the police registered a case against the protesters affiliated with the ruling CPI(M) party. The SFI members were staging a black-flag protest against Khan, who was on way to attend a function at an Aashram near Kottarakkara.

“I am not upset about the black flag protest. But I was worried when they hit my vehicle,” he reportedly said.

Khan confronted the SFI activists and subsequently took a chair from a nearby shop and sat down, refusing to move until the agitators were arrested.

“I will not leave from here. Police are giving them protection,” Khan is seen angrily telling onlookers.

The standoff continued for some time, with a large crowd gathering at the spot, including police officials and local residents.

“If the police are the ones breaking the law, who is going to uphold the law,” he asked the policemen.

This latest incident is a fresh addition to the ongoing tussle between Khan and the Left government in the state, which has been marked by disagreements over various issues, particularly the functioning of universities in the state and Khan’s refusal to sign specific bills passed by the assembly.

The tension peaked earlier this week when Khan abruptly ended his customary policy address to the Kerala Assembly after just two minutes amidst protests from the ruling party MLAs.

The SFI has been at the forefront of protests against Khan, accusing him of using his authority as Chancellor of universities in the state to appoint nominees of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to key positions in universities.

Khan has denied these allegations.
