When President Of The United States Joe Biden said that every American above 16 would be eligible to get COVID-19 vaccine, he was also concerned that many evangelists will not take the vaccination as they think God is the ultimate healer and deliverer.

What is even more surprising is that many of the evangelists are educated but their deep conviction and faith in their religion is stopping them from availing this potentially life-saving drug. For them, they are God’s chosen people and will be protected from any illness or disease.

According to the Pew Research Center, there are about 41 million white evangelical adults in the U.S. and 45 per cent said in late February that they would not get vaccinated against Covid-19. This not only put the lives of these people at risk but they also risk the lives of their family and the community.

Freedom of religion is a big thing in America and there are denominations who simply refuse modern medical treatment. Instead they rely on healing through prayer. The Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse blood transfusion. Christian Scientists refuse most medical treatment and rely on healing through prayers. The Faith Tabernacle Congregation in Altoona which is a city in Blair County, Pennsylvania, believes that disease is caused by the devil.

Such strong conviction comes straight from the bible that has many passages in the Christian Scriptures (New Testament) which describe Jesus Christ healing sick people in the first century CE.

It is ironic such perversion can be seen in Western society that the leader of the Catholic Church who is also known as the Vicar of Christ has to pronounce that vaccines are safe and it is “morally acceptable,”.

It is hard to comprehend that the Pope had to go and convince that it is ok to take the vaccine as the number of dead keeps rising. But significant Catholics in America still refuse to be inoculated even when President Joe Biden is from the same denomination.

It is no secret that the Abrahamic faiths, particularly Christianity and Islam that comes from scripture and dogma perspective have always been anti-science. For the many white evangelicals, the hesitancy is driven by Biblical mythology from the Book of Revelation.

The Book of Revelation is a very powerful part of the bible and has been used several times by priests and pastors to create panic in communities and this time around, the faithful think that the beast will force his mark on people and that the vaccine is this mark.

This is a reference to an apocalyptic passage from the Book of Revelation that suggests that the Anti-christ will test Christians by asking them to put a mark on their bodies.

To compound the problem, some of the largest Christian ministries that enjoy massive online followings on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube have made the claim that the vaccines contain fetal tissue or microchips, or ingredients is associated with the devil.

In India, the Ulema or the Islamic religious leaders of various seminaries had to issue a Fatwa that vaccines can be taken during the time of Ramzan. For Catholics, it is like the same when the Pope issues a Papal Bull .

While India has been portrayed by the West as superstitious it is pertinent to note that there was no need for leaders of faith native to this land, to guide followers that the vaccine is safe.

As the world is battling with the Wuhan virus and China’s grip over the global supply chain, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called on India to end its dependence on Chinese goods, reports Wion.

There is already growing tensions between Washington and Beijing and this comment was made by Pompeo when he was addressing a US-India virtual business summit.

During his address, Pompeo said the current situation is a great opportunity for New Delhi to attract global supply chains away from China and said, “India has a chance to attract global supply chains away from China and reduce its reliance on Chinese companies in areas like telecommunications, medical supplies, and others. India is in this position because it has earned the trust of many nations around the world, including the United States.”

US-China relations took a nosedive since Donald Trump was elected president and the coronavirus pandemic has turned out to be the tipping point not to mention the deteriorating political situation in Hong Kong.

On Wednesday (July 23) Washington ordered Beijing to shut its consulate in Houston.

Also, on Tuesday (July 22), the United States Justice Department indicted two Chinese nationals for hacking defence contractors, COVID-19 researchers and hundreds of other victims worldwide according to Aljazeera.

China and India also have long had a prickly relationship and it hit a low ebb following a border clash on June 15 that left 20 Indian soldiers dead as well as an unknown number of Chinese casualties.

Pompeo said, “The clashes were initiated by China’s armed forces and were another example of unacceptable behaviour from China’s ruling Communist Party.”

He also said he supports India’s decision to ban 59 Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok, saying the video-sharing app “presents serious security risks for the Indian people”.

In the same event, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave an open invitation to US companies to invest in his nation of 1.3 billion people, and this will help the economies both countries bounce back as the Coronavirus spreads.

The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledged evidence of the airborne spread of COVID-19 after a Geneva-based agency outlined evidence showing how floating virus particles can infect people who breathe them. The agency urged the WHO to update its guidelines.

According to WHO the virus primarily spreads through small droplets expelled from an infected person’s mouth or nose. Although they acknowledged that there is emerging evidence of COVID-19 being airborne, they say the evidence is not definitive.

Airborne transmission is different from droplet transmission as it refers to the presence of microbes within droplet nuclei that can remain in the air for long periods of time and be transmitted to others over distances greater than 1m.

They are aware of other studies that are evaluating the presence of the virus in air samples. However, most are not yet published in peer-reviewed journals. According to WHO, the detection of ribonucleic acid (RNA) in environmental samples is not indicative of a viable virus that could be transmissible.

Further studies are needed to determine whether it is possible to detect the COVID-19 virus in air samples.

Based on the available evidence, WHO continues to recommend droplet and contact precautions for those people caring for COVID-19 patients. WHO continues to recommend airborne precautions for circumstances and settings in which aerosol-generating procedures and support treatment are performed.

China has issued a nationwide bubonic plague alert following a case in the Northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of the country.  Level 3 alert has been issued, which also calls for prevention and control of the same. The alert forbids the hunting and eating of animals that could carry plague and asks the public to report any suspected cases of plague or fever with no clear causes and to report any sick or dead marmots.

This comes after the Chinese news agency Xinhua had reported two cases of bubonic plague in the Khovd Province of Mongolia in Bayan Nur. Two brothers had reportedly contracted this disease after consuming the meat of marmot.

Bubonic plague is a disease that could have a pandemic level effect if contracted and spread. It is a relatively rare disease in today’s world, but it is prevalent in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, and Peru. It is caused by coming into contact with fleas, which have bitten rodents. This plague causes swelling of lymph nodes and could have a fatality rate of 30-60 %.

This sparked controversy worldwide because a similar plague had wiped out nearly half of Europe’s population in the Middle Ages. It was even dubbed ‘black death’, because it causes the blackening of fingernails, which is the first symptom of the disease. This was one of the worst pandemics in human history that claimed millions of lives in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The authorities of Bayannur, a city in China issued a level III warning of plague prevention and control.

“At present, there is a risk of a human plague epidemic spreading in this city. The public should improve its self-protection awareness and ability, and report abnormal health conditions promptly,” the local health authority said.

A bubonic plague is suspected to have emerged in China.

The bubonic plague comes after researchers in China announced another potential pandemic caused by an influenza virus in pigs.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that a bubonic plague is a bacterial disease that is spread by fleas living on wild rodents such as marmots. If it is not identified and treated in time, an adult can die in less than 24 hours.

A 27-year-old resident and his 17-year-old brother are confirmed cases of the bubonic plague. They are currently under treatment in two different hospitals. It is said that the brothers had consumed marmot meat. Others are suggested not to consume marmot meat.

Those who had come in contact with the brothers have been isolated and are being treated at local hospitals.

The local health authority announced that the warning period will continue until the end of 2020.

Singapore cuts its GDP forecast for the third time this year, as their GDP seems to have been battered by the pandemic.

The country’s economy has taken a major hit due to the pandemic, as the first quarter saw a 0.7% year-on-year decrease, warning of a more severe hit in the days to come. Economists say that the country is headed for its deepest ever recession.

The first signs of a potential recession was noticed when the government cut its 2020 GDP projections to -0.5% to 1.5%, from 0.5% to 2.5% previously.

“There continues to be a significant degree of uncertainty over the length and severity of the COVID-19 outbreak, as well as the trajectory of the economic recovery,” said Gabriel Lim, permanent secretary at the ministry of trade and industry.

There has also been a downgrade in the non-oil domestic exports, from -0.5% to 1.5% previously to -4.0% to -1.0%.

Exports have proved to be a silver lining in an otherwise bleak economy, due to the increasing demand in pharmaceuticals, thanks to the pandemic.

Singapore’s finance minister is touted to address this issue on Tuesday by delivering the latest in a string of multi-billion-dollar economic packages to offset the hit to businesses and households from the pandemic later.
