On 9 February 2026, the Supreme Court of India delivered a clear, unambiguous message to all state governments and especially to West Bengal that the integrity of India’s electoral process is non-negotiable. In ruling that there can be no obstacles to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the apex court reaffirmed a foundational principle of the Republic: free and fair elections are not subject to the whims of state executives or partisan convenience.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi, categorically rejected attempts to stall or dilute the SIR exercise. While granting West Bengal a limited one-week extension pushing the deadline from 14th February the Court made it abundantly clear that this was an accommodation, not a concession to obstructionism. “We will not allow any impediment to the SIR process,” Chief Justice Kant declared, adding that this must be understood by all states.

This statement gains particular significance in the context of the sustained resistance mounted by the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. The Chief Minister herself approached the Supreme Court, alleging that the Election Commission of India (ECI) was “targeting” Bengal and that the SIR exercise was designed to “bulldoze” the Bengali people. Such rhetoric, while politically emotive, collapses under legal and constitutional scrutiny.

At its core, the SIR process is neither an act of exclusion nor a political vendetta. It is a routine, but critical exercise aimed at cleaning electoral rolls removing duplicate entries, correcting discrepancies, and ensuring that only eligible voters are registered. In a democracy of India’s scale, especially in states with a long history of electoral malpractices and political violence, such revisions are not optional extras; they are essential safeguards.

The Supreme Court’s sharp questioning of the West Bengal government exposed a troubling pattern of delay and non-cooperation. Chief Justice Kant openly questioned why the state sent the names of over 8,000 Group B officers at midnight on 7th February, when clear directions had already been issued on 4th February. He also asked why there was a delay in providing officers to replace micro-observers, a move that could have been “approved” had it been done in time.

The Election Commission’s submissions were even more damning. According to its affidavit, the Bengal government was repeatedly unresponsive despite five formal letters outlining the requirement for experienced officials to act as Electoral Registration Officers (EROs). Out of nearly 300 officers demanded, only 64 with appropriate adjudicatory experience were provided. Given that EROs perform quasi-judicial functions deciding claims and objections this shortfall is not a procedural lapse but a substantive threat to electoral fairness.

Unable to secure adequate cooperation, the ECI exercised its constitutional authority to deploy micro-observers. This, too, was projected by the state government as an intrusion, despite the fact that micro-observers merely assist the process and do not issue final decisions. The Court clarified this distinction, reinforcing that the ECI’s actions were well within the bounds of law and necessity.

Perhaps the most serious aspect of the case was the Election Commission’s expressed concern over violence and intimidation. The Supreme Court’s decision to seek a personal affidavit from the Director General of Police speaks volumes about the gravity of the situation. West Bengal’s recent electoral history from panchayat polls marred by bloodshed to repeated allegations of voter intimidation provides ample context for these concerns.

Mamata Banerjee’s claim that the SIR process is “solely for elimination and not for inclusion” is a classic case of political misdirection. The same political establishment that has often been accused of facilitating illegal migration, nurturing ghost voters, and weaponizing demographics for electoral gain now seeks to cloak administrative scrutiny as cultural or ethnic victimisation.

This narrative is not only misleading but dangerous, as it undermines public trust in constitutional institutions.
The ECI’s affidavit pulls no punches. It accuses the Bengal government of “conscious and systematic efforts” to thwart the SIR exercise through “proper planning and concerted action.” The language is severe, but the circumstances warrant it. When a state government, ruling party members, and sections of the administration appear to act in concert to frustrate a constitutionally mandated process, it raises serious questions about democratic accountability.

The Supreme Court’s intervention, therefore, is not merely a procedural correction it is a constitutional course correction. By asserting that no state can impede the SIR process, the Court has reinforced the supremacy of the Constitution over political expediency. It has also sent a broader message: federalism in India does not mean feudal autonomy, and states cannot behave as electoral fiefdoms.

In an era where democratic institutions are routinely politicised, the judiciary’s firm stance is reassuring. The Election Commission, often accused sometimes unfairly of overreach, has in this instance acted squarely within its mandate to protect the sanctity of the vote. The Court’s backing strengthens its hand and restores institutional balance.

Ultimately, this episode is about more than West Bengal. It is about whether India will allow electoral processes to be sabotaged under the guise of regional sentiment and political victimhood. The Supreme Court has answered that question decisively. Democracy, it has reminded us, cannot be negotiated, delayed, or diluted least of all by those sworn to uphold it.

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday, 22 January 2026, refused to restrain the Enforcement Directorate (ED) from accessing data on the mobile phone of Jitendra Mehta, a functionary of political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), which was seized during a search at the firm’s Delhi office on 8 January 2026. Mehta has been summoned to appear before the ED at its headquarters on Friday, 23 January 2026.

Appearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, senior advocate C A Sundaram, representing Mehta, argued that allowing the ED to access the contents of the phone would violate his client’s right to privacy. He urged the court to restrain the agency from opening the device until the next date of hearing on Tuesday. The bench, however, questioned the plea, asking, “Why are you so afraid?” When Sundaram contended that the apex court should intervene to protect Mehta’s fundamental rights, the bench responded, “We know how to protect an innocent citizen.” Sundaram then remarked that the court appeared to be presuming his client’s guilt.

The court noted that during the January 8 search operation, ED officials seized digital devices from I-PAC’s Delhi office. However, similar action could not be completed at the firm’s Kolkata premises after West Bengal Police officials intervened in the presence of Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Documents and digital devices seized by ED officers in Kolkata were reportedly taken away from them during the interruption.

The CJI-led bench also decided to club all matters relating to interim restraints placed on the ED from accessing phones and digital devices of accused persons in other money laundering cases and scheduled a consolidated hearing for Tuesday.

Sources indicated that the other cases where the ED has been restrained by the Supreme Court from accessing digital data include matters linked to Future Gaming owned by lottery businessman Santiago Martin, NewsClick, Foundation for Media Professionals, Amazon Seller Services Pvt Ltd, and the Tamil Nadu government. In these cases, it was argued that existing laws were inadequate and that permitting enforcement agencies to access personal devices would infringe upon the fundamental right to privacy under Article 21 and the right against self-incrimination under Article 20(3) of the Constitution.

The accused in these matters have sought the Supreme Court’s intervention to frame comprehensive guidelines governing the search and seizure of digital devices, citing concerns that such devices also contain extensive personal data. In November 2023, the court had directed the government to draft such guidelines. Following a request for time, the Ministry of Home Affairs later constituted a panel headed by the director of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to formulate norms aimed at curbing the indiscriminate seizure of digital devices. The government has argued that until formal guidelines are finalised, central agencies should be permitted to follow the CBI manual while conducting searches and seizures.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) functioned as a “corporate entity” working to advance the political interests of the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal.

Chowdhury’s remarks came as Mamata Banerjee intensified her criticism of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over recent raids at I-PAC offices. Addressing the media, Chowdhury questioned Banerjee’s response to the ED action and alleged selective outrage.

The Congress leader claimed that it was on the advice of Prashant Kishor, without naming him directly, that the TMC brought a “renowned cricketer” from Gujarat to contest from Murshidabad, a Muslim-majority district, during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He implied that the move was aimed at defeating him by leveraging religious identity, though he did not name TMC MP Yusuf Pathan.

According to Chowdhury, a “heinous” act was committed in his constituency, alleging that a communal riot was engineered at the behest of I-PAC. He further claimed that this was later acknowledged by a TMC MLA in public.

Chowdhury also alleged that TMC MLA Humayun Kabir was used as a front, on I-PAC’s advice, to organise riots in Murshidabad, intimidate Hindu residents, and allegedly shift Hindu votes towards the BJP. He claimed that these actions were part of a larger political strategy.

Questioning Banerjee’s criticism of the ED, Chowdhury said the agency had conducted investigations against multiple political parties, including the Congress. He alleged that when Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi were targeted by central agencies, Banerjee did not raise objections, accusing her of reacting selectively now.

Further, Chowdhury alleged that I-PAC acted as an intermediary to extract money for senior TMC leaders and played a decisive role in shaping the party’s internal functioning. He claimed that while I-PAC did not contest elections, it allegedly influenced leadership decisions, internal voting, and organisational roles within the TMC.

“I-PAC acts as the eyes and ears of the TMC,” Chowdhury alleged, claiming that funds collected through these activities were routed to the TMC, with the consultancy firm taking a share.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee finds herself at the center of a fresh political firestorm for her remarks on the Durgapur medical student rape case, continuing a long-standing pattern of comments that critics argue consistently blame victims and question their conduct rather than addressing the crimes perpetrated against them.

The latest controversy erupted on Sunday when the Chief Minister, addressing the gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student, focused her inquiry on the victim’s whereabouts.

“She was studying in a private medical college… all the private medical are whose responsibility? how they came out in the night at 12:30?… it happened, so far I know, in the forest area… investigation is on,” Banerjee said. She added, “Especially the girl child at night time they should not be allowed to come out in the outside… They have to protect themselves also.”

The 2012 ‘Open Market’ Comment

Following the horrific Park Street gang rape in 2012, Banerjee made a statement that shocked the nation. She linked rising rape cases to modern social interactions between men and women.

“Rape cases are on the rise because boys and girls interact more freely now. Earlier, if men and women would hold hands, they would get caught by parents and reprimanded, but now everything is so open. It’s like an open market with open options,” she had stated. She had also notoriously dismissed the Park Street rape as a “fabricated incident” or “shajano ghatana” meant to embarrass her government.

The 2013 Kamduni Outburst

In June 2013, a 20-year-old college student, Shipra Ghosh, was abducted, gang-raped, and murdered in Kamduni. When Banerjee visited the village days later, she was met by angry women protesters demanding justice and safety.

Her response was to angrily dismiss them. “People here are CPM supporters. I am sorry to say CPM is doing politics. All the goons arrested (for the rape-murder) were CPM supporters. Chorer mayer boro gala (the thief’s mother shouts the loudest),” Mamata said as she got into her car, refusing to listen to their pleas.

The 2022 Hanskhali ‘Affair’ Insinuation

In a particularly egregious case from April 2022, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped at a birthday party by the son of a TMC leader. The girl bled to death, after which the accused and his associates allegedly snatched her body and set it on fire to destroy evidence.

Instead of condemning the atrocity, Chief Minister Banerjee publicly cast doubt on the family’s account, suggesting a consensual relationship.

“The police are yet to understand the cause of the death. I had asked them. Will you call it rape or was she pregnant? Was it (the fallout of) a love affair? Have you enquired about these?… I am talking as a layman. From where will they (police) get the evidence whether she was raped or she was pregnant or there was any other reason such as she was slapped by someone after which she fell ill,” Banerjee said at a public event.

A Consistent Pattern Over the Years

Sandwiched between these major incidents are numerous other cases – Kakdwip, Ranaghat, Siuri, and the systemic horrors of Sandeshkhali – where the Chief Minister’s response has been marked by either a stunning silence, a reluctance to acknowledge the crimes, or a swift attribution of political motives to protesters.

From questioning a victim’s presence outside at night, to insinuating consensual affairs, to blaming “open” interactions between genders, and dismissing protesters as political operatives, Mamata Banerjee’s tenure is marked by a consistent thread: a refusal to place the blame for sexual violence squarely on the perpetrators and the systems that fail to stop them, instead focusing scrutiny on the actions, character, and circumstances of the victims.

This is not an isolated incident but part of a recurring behaviour of the West Bengal Chief Minister spanning over a decade.

Starting from this weekend and continuing till the next, West Bengal is all set to be rocked again over protest movements by various groups on the first anniversary of the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August last year. The body of the victim was recovered from a seminar hall within the hospital premises on the morning of August 9.

While the sole convict in the case, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy had already been sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court, even after a year, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had been unable to complete its investigation on the alleged “larger conspiracy” behind the crime. Hence, while the movement last year was mainly targeted at the state administration in West Bengal and the ruling Trinamool Congress, this movement will have a larger perspective, also focussing on the alleged inability of the CBI to complete a fool-proof investigation in the matter.

The parents of the victim have given a ‘Nabanna Abhijan (march to the state secretariat)’ call on August 9 and appealed to all political parties to join in the procession, demanding justice for their daughter on her death anniversary.

Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who first floated the idea of involving the victim’s parents there, has extended full-fledged support to the protest march. On Wednesday, Adhikari accused the West Bengal government of allegedly using its entire police administration to stop the protest march. The BJP leader stated that a special police briefing has been convened on Wednesday evening, which almost all top IPS officers of West Bengal Police have been asked to attend.

Using his social media handle, LoP Adhikari, without mentioning Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s name, said she has gone to Jhargram to attend her events after deploying the police force to protect the state secretariat. “Abhaya’s parents, a year after the hellish episode that happened to their child, have called for a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ to demand answers from the state’s police and health minister for her failure over the incident. But out of that fear, the honourable person has already fled the city on the pretext of an administrative program in Jhargram!”

LoP Adhikari alleged. Sharing a copy of the police note for the briefing later in the day, the BJP leader said, “To protect her chair at the state secretariat, all the big police officers are meeting today at the police line in Shibpur, Howrah, to make arrangements for how to send the entire state police on the road!”

Besides the march to the state secretariat, several protest programmes have been announced by other pressure groups from August 8 to August 15 to observe the anniversary of the tragedy. Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), West Bengal, Medical Service Centre, Service Doctors affiliated to All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO), West Bengal Doctors’ Forum, and Association of Health Service Doctors, will organise multiple protest movements.

The convenor of JPD, Punyabrata, said that the state government had failed miserably in ensuring the safety and security of Bengal’s daughters in hospitals and colleges. “Even after the tragic incident at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital a year ago, another rape took place in a law college in South Kolkata. This shows that there is a need to hit the streets once again to demand justice for our daughter and hold the government accountable,” Punyabrata added.

On August 8, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) will take out a torch rally from College Square to Shyambazar in north Kolkata at 9 P.M. and from midnight to 4 A.M. the next day, they will organise a sit-in at Shyambazar five-point crossing.

On August 9, JPD and Abhaya Mancha will tie rakhis in the morning to send the message of providing safety and security to the people. At 4 P.M., doctors will assemble at Hazra crossing to take out a march to Kalighat, near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence. At 6 P.M. on the same day, the WBHDF has given a call for a gathering at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital.

On August 14, rallies and protest meetings will be organised by doctors and the common people. At midnight, another ‘Reclaim the Night’ event has been planned across Kolkata where the common man, including women of the household, will take to the streets to demand justice.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on Tuesday, reiterated her allegation that the BJP-led Union government wants to impose the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal through Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

“A plan to slap NRC is being hatched in the name of conducting SIR. Ensure that your name is on the voter’s list. Every individual must have his name on the voter’s list. If anyone’s name is excluded, then bring it to the notice of the concerned authorities. We will stand by those people. We will not tolerate if people are sent to Bangladesh after deleting their names from voters’ list. Indian citizens shouldn’t be branded as Bangladeshis,” Banerjee said.

Speaking to media persons after visiting flood-affected areas in Ghatal of West Midnapore district, the Chief Minister also added that it was the Election Commission of India that planned the idea of the EPIC card.

“Who came up with Aadhaar cards? Crores of rupees were spent to make these cards. Why won’t these cards, along with ration cards, be considered proof of citizenship? It is a planned game by the BJP government at the Centre with the help of the ECI. We do not tolerate this,” CM Banerjee said.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister once again criticised the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for releasing its water to West Bengal and vowed to erect a dam and channel the water back to Jharkhand after coming to power post the 2026 state Assembly polls.

“I come to Ghatal every time. This place witnesses floods everywhere. This time, the DVC has broken all records by releasing water. They do not dredge there. They have not dredged for 20 years. When it rains, water is released into Bengal. After the 2026 state Assembly polls, we will plan how to stop the release of water. It will cost money. But we will also build a dam and then release it somewhere else. We are fed up with taking this pain. This time we will also make a game plan,” CM Banerjee said.

The Chief Minister also hit out at the Union government for its alleged step-motherly attitude towards Bengal.

“Earlier, the Union government used to give money to prevent the erosion of the Ganges. Now we have to do everything by ourselves. I have been telling the Union government about the Ghatal Master Plan for a long time. They have not done anything. It was supposed to be done by them. But we have already made a plan worth Rs 1,500 crore. The work has started. More work will be done after the monsoon season. A committee has been formed,” she said.

She again criticised the BJP for its stance on the Bengali language and Bengali migrant workers. “Now they (BJP) are saying that Bengali is not a language. Instead, they are demanding that I (Chief Minister) be arrested under the National Security Act for raising these questions. I am speaking in Bengali again. How dare they say that there is no language called Bengali,” she said.

Earlier on Tuesday, CM Banerjee said that West Bengal has registered a 12 per cent year-on-year growth in gross GST collections for July 2025.

In a social media post, CM Banerjee said the state collected Rs 5,895 crore in GST revenue last month, up from Rs 5,257 crore in July 2024. “Glad to share that West Bengal has reported a robust 12 per cent year-on-year growth in gross GST collections for July 2025, recording a collection of Rs 5,895 crore, compared to Rs 5,257 crore in the same month last year, according to provisional figures just released by the Union government,” she said.

“Cumulative growth rate in our state’s GST revenue till July is 7.71 per cent. This marks a steady improvement in business and consumption in West Bengal, which is a sign of good economic health,” CM Banerjee added.

The latest report by a credible bankers’ body, on 30 July, identified the pathetic state of institutional financial inclusion among people residing in rural West Bengal. The poor show is in terms of both deposits mobilised and loans disbursed by the rural branches operating from the rural belts in the state.

The pathetic picture on this count was revealed in the latest report of the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) in West Bengal having representations from both the different banks operating in the state as well as from the West Bengal government. As per the report, while the average savings deposit rate per individual per month in rural West Bengal currently stands at just ₹279, the loan rate per person there is just ₹19.

Economists say that while the low average savings deposit rate per individual per month indicates the lack of adequate disposable income among the people in rural West Bengal to park in savings, the low rate of loans per person indicates their lack of financial credibility to avail of institutional borrowing.

At the same time, economists say, the two figures also indicate the pathetic credit to deposit (CD) ratio in the state, a factor where West Bengal had been traditionally much behind the national average. The CD ratio for any state is determined on the basis of the total deposit accumulation figure in the state being divided by the total loans disbursed figure during a particular financial year. Economists say that the low disposable income affecting regular and reasonable savings is an indication of the lack of adequate employment or income-generation avenues in rural West Bengal and is also an indication of the predominant and over-excessive dependence on farming, which is no longer profitable considering the extremely fragmented land-holding nature in the state.

At the same time, economists say, the self-help group (SHGs) model, which provides avenues for alternative incomes in rural India other than farming, also seems to be lacking successful implementation in rural West Bengal. SHGs not only provide adequate disposable income to people associated with them to park in savings, but also push up the CD ratio, considering that the SHG sector is a major component in institutional loans. Finally, economists say, the long stagnant rate of wages in the unorganised sector in rural West Bengal is yet another factor adversely affecting the institutional financial inclusion there.

On 14 July 2025, opposition parties lashed out at the BJP-led Centre following the house detention of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and several of his party colleagues. The detentions were aimed at preventing their visit to the Naqshband Sahib graveyard in Srinagar to pay homage on Martyrs’ Day, observed annually on 13 July to commemorate those killed during protests against Dogra rule in 1931.

Until Article 370 was revoked in 2019, 13 July was an official public holiday in Jammu and Kashmir. The day marked the killing of 22 Muslims who had gathered outside Srinagar Central Jail, where a British cook, Abdul Qadeer Khan accused of sedition for inciting rebellion against Dogra rule was on trial. As the crowd swelled to several thousand, a confrontation ensued. Dogra police opened fire, resulting in multiple deaths.

Despite the restrictions, Omar Abdullah climbed over the graveyard gates in Srinagar to pay respects to the 22 people who were killed by Dogra forces on 13 July 1931.

In this backdrop, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the move, stating it was a denial of fundamental rights. “What is wrong in visiting the graveyard of martyrs? This is not only unfortunate, it also snatches the democratic right of a citizen. What happened this morning to an elected Chief Minister @OmarAbdullah is unacceptable. Shocking. Shameful.”

Similarly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also voiced his disapproval, highlighting the irony of placing an elected leader under house arrest merely for attempting to honor historical figures. “At a time when there is a growing demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, the current events unfolding there are a grim reminder of how far things have deteriorated. The elected CM Hon’ble @OmarAbdullah is being placed under house arrest simply for wanting to pay homage to the 1931 martyrs and is forced to climb walls to do so. Is this how an elected Chief Minister should be treated?” Stalin asked in his post on X.

He further accused the central government of systematically eroding the authority of state governments. “This is not just about one state or one leader. From Tamil Nadu to Kashmir, the Union BJP Government is systematically stripping away the rights of elected State Governments. If this can happen in Kashmir, it can happen anywhere, to any elected representative of the people. Every democratic voice must unequivocally condemn this,” he wrote, calling for a unified condemnation from all democratic voices.

A circular from the West Bengal School Education Department, directing all state-run schools to keep 19 books penned by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has created a major controversy.

In the circular, the Commissioner of School Education directed all District Inspectors (DIs) of schools to ensure that 515 books, including 19 penned by CM Banerjee, are kept in the libraries.

BJP’s Information Technology Cell chief and the party’s central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, ridiculed the state government over the development and claimed that in the Trinamool Congress regime, even school children were not spared from the “scam”.

“Another Day, Another TMC Scam! In Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal, even schoolchildren are not spared from corruption. In a bizarre and shameful move, government schools in West Bengal are being forced to buy 19 books written by Mamata Banerjee to be eligible for a Rs 1 lakh grant. Yes, you read that right – public money, meant to improve infrastructure and education, is now being used to market the Chief Minister’s vanity projects,” said Malviya in a statement, which he posted on the wall of his official X handle on Tuesday morning.

Claiming that no student deserves to be “punished with Mamata Banerjee’s incoherent literary output”, Malviya said that this move by the state School Education Department was a misuse of taxpayers’ money to fill up the coffers of the Trinamool Congress through “fake” book sales and “backdoor royalties”.

“Another ploy to convert black money into white ahead of elections? After destroying the future of Bengal’s youth through violence, unemployment, and political interference in education, Mamata Banerjee is now monetising school libraries for personal and political gain. We will not stay silent. We will not let TMC loot education. We will not let Bengal’s future be sold for propaganda,” Malviya’s statement read.

Even the different academic associations in West Bengal have criticised the move. According to the general secretary of Sikshak Sikshakarmi Sikshanuragi Aikya Mancha (Unity Forum of Teachers, Non-teaching staff and Learners), Kinkar Adhikari, the state School Education Department should immediately withdraw the direction given to the state-run schools in the matter.

He claimed that this move was somewhat similar to the British rule in the country when the British Empire had set certain conditions for the then vice-chancellor of the University of Calcutta, Asutosh Mukhopadhyay, for a financial grant for the university. “Asutosh Mukhopadhyay rejected the offer.

Unfortunately, we have witnessed a similar approach on the part of the Trinamool government in independent India,” Adhikari added. All in the Trinamool Congress had maintained total silence on the matter.

On 18 June 2025, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced significant backlash after making an insensitive comment about the recent plane crash in Ahmedabad. In an apparent dig at the BJP-led central government, she mocked the tragedy, saying that the “double engine” government had “taken off and gone.” This drew significant backlash from all corners.

Mamata Banerjee commented, “Your double engine government only bulldoze the people, and you are an autocrat government, but you cannot keep protection to the people.” She then added, laughing, “Double engine was just take off and double engine…,” mimicking the flight’s crash in a mocking manner. Her actions, coupled with her words, drew outrage as many felt it was a disrespectful way to make a political point using a tragedy.

On 12 June 2025, Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 people on board — 230 passengers and 12 crew members, crashed into a hospital building just seconds after takeoff, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries and leaving the entire country in shock. Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 52 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian citizen. One survivor — sitting in seat 11A — was found alive after the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
