A fire triggered by an alleged electrical short circuit at a Corporation Hospital in Purasaiwalkam in Chennai has left a newborn baby with burn injuries, prompting an official investigation and raising concerns over safety protocols in public healthcare facilities, as reported in Tamil Getlokal.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred shortly after the infant’s delivery. The newborn, only hours old, sustained burns on the back and thigh. The baby has since been shifted to the Institute of Child Health for specialised treatment. Authorities have not yet released a detailed medical bulletin on the infant’s current condition.

Police have launched an inquiry into the cause of the fire, with preliminary indications pointing to an electrical fault within the hospital premises.

The child’s mother, who had delivered at the facility, described a sequence of events that has intensified scrutiny of hospital response and communication.

She stated that she had been under treatment for a prolonged period and chose the hospital based on the assurance of a senior doctor known to her. According to her account, the delivery procedure initially proceeded without complications, and she was briefly shown the baby following birth.

However, during the post-operative phase, she reported hearing panic among hospital staff. She stated that she witnessed the newborn sustaining burn injuries but was reassured by staff that the baby was safe.

The mother further stated that she has not been given clear information about her child’s condition. She expressed distress over being asked to proceed with discharge formalities without being informed about the baby’s status and demanded accountability from the hospital authorities.

The incident has sparked concern over emergency preparedness and electrical safety in government-run hospitals. Officials indicated that a detailed probe is underway to determine the exact sequence of events, including whether established safety protocols were followed.

Authorities are also expected to examine staff response during the incident and the communication provided to the patient’s family.

Further updates on the baby’s condition and the findings of the investigation are awaited.

A video from the Thirubhuvanam Government Hospital in Sivaganga district has triggered controversy after showing a sanitation worker allegedly providing first aid to an injured patient.

According to reports, the incident involved Varadarajan, a resident of Pethanenthal village, who arrived at the hospital on Wednesday afternoon with a head injury. With no doctor or nurse reportedly present at the time, sanitation worker Pappammal was said to have cleaned the wound and applied medicine.

Bystanders recorded the episode and shared the footage on social media, where it quickly went viral and drew public criticism. The development has renewed scrutiny of staffing levels at the government facility.

Sources indicated that the hospital handles more than 600 outpatients and over 50 inpatients daily. While norms require the presence of 12 doctors and 20 nurses, only six doctors and five nurses are currently posted, according to available information.

Allegations have also emerged that doctors remain on duty for only about an hour in the morning, with sanitation staff and trainee students attending to patients during other periods. The claims have intensified public dissatisfaction, particularly since a new hospital building was recently inaugurated at a reported cost of ₹3.9 crore.

Responding to the controversy, hospital authorities stated that the patient was bleeding heavily and the sanitation worker intervened only to clean the wound in an emergency. The administration said the doctor stationed on the first floor was informed immediately and subsequently took over the patient’s treatment.

A woman sustained head injuries after cement plaster from the ceiling of a government hospital building collapsed in an area housing infants and children, triggering concerns over infrastructure safety.

Padma, a resident of Mandalavadi near Ponneri in Tirupattur district, had brought her six-month-old grandchild to the government hospital for treatment for fever and cold. During their stay, cement plaster allegedly fell from the upper portion of the building and struck Padma on the head. She suffered serious injuries and required two stitches.

Speaking about the incident, Padma questioned the safety of keeping infants and patients in what she described as an old and poorly maintained building. She said the ceiling structure appeared thin and unsafe and asked how such construction could be allowed in areas meant for vulnerable patients. “If it had fallen on the baby, what would have happened?” she asked, adding that patients could not be expected to assess building safety and that it was the responsibility of hospital authorities to ensure a secure environment.

Padma further alleged that hospital staff downplayed the incident, describing it as an unavoidable accident similar to a road mishap, and advised her not to treat it as a serious issue. She said this response left her distressed and unsure how to seek accountability.

According to Padma, she had noticed signs of the building’s age when she was admitted and feared for the safety of children housed there. She said that at the time of the incident, she was lying down while her daughter and grandchild on the cot nearby, and the plaster fell directly on her head. Her immediate concern, she said, was to check whether the baby was safe.

Calling for urgent action, Padma demanded a thorough inspection of all hospital buildings, particularly those used for children and infants. She said government hospitals are meant to be places of safety and protection and warned that similar incidents could prove fatal if immediate steps are not taken.

In a shocking and bizarre incident, a fully-grown ganja (cannabis) plant, standing three feet tall, was found thriving within the secured campus of the Stanley Government Hospital in Vannarapettai, Chennai. The discovery has sent waves of panic and disbelief through one of the city’s largest healthcare facilities, which sees thousands of patients and visitors daily.

The incident came to light following repeated complaints to the hospital administration from individuals within the complex about a persistent smell of ganja wafting through a particular area of the grounds. The hospital campus, known for its maintained trees and decorative plants, became the subject of an internal check.

Acting on the complaints, authorities conducted an inspection. To their astonishment, they found the substantial cannabis plant growing openly. Visuals of the plant, shot by a visitor to the hospital at approximately 11:00 AM, clearly show its robust height and health, situated well within the hospital’s boundaries.

The discovery caused immediate shock and panic among attending doctors, medical staff, and patients on the campus. Hospital security promptly informed the local police.

Police personnel arrived at the scene and, after documenting the find, uprooted the entire plant, roots and all, and removed it from the premises for evidence and further analysis. An investigation is now underway, with police questioning doctors, staff, and patients present at the hospital. The core lines of inquiry focus on determining how the plant grew to such a size without detection and, crucially, whether it was deliberately cultivated by anti-social elements on the hospital grounds.

Authorities have confirmed the plant’s removal.

A video featuring female staff members dancing inside Kuzhithurai Government Hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism and recommend for disciplinary action. The footage shows nurses celebrating the Onam festival with songs and traditional dances inside a hospital building that houses both the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Surgery Department.

The hospital, situated in the Vettumani area, serves a large number of patients from neighboring regions. During the Onam celebration, the staff reportedly used loudspeakers to performed dance. The video of this event, now circulating widely online, has drawn public backlash due to concerns about noise disturbances near critical care units.

Many social media users have condemned the staff for holding a noisy celebration within the hospital premises, pointing out that such festivities could disturb patients in sensitive departments. Several have suggested that the event should have been held in a less disruptive location also recommended for action.

Onam, a major festival in Kerala, is also widely celebrated in bordering regions of Tamil Nadu, including Kanyakumari district, where the culture and traditions are closely intertwined with those of Kerala.

A video recently surfaced from the Panruti Government Primary Health Center in Cuddalore district, showing a heated exchange between a government doctor and the parent of a young patient. The doctor, who was on duty at the time, is seen speaking in a hostile tone and allegedly threatening to file a police case against the parent who was seeking answers regarding his child’s treatment.

According to reports, a fourth-grade student had received an injection at the health center after sustaining injuries from a fall. However, when the injection site later became swollen and infected, the child’s parents returned to the hospital to raise concerns. When they questioned the doctor about the reaction, she reportedly refused to provide a proper explanation and instead responded with threats, asserting that she could file a case and that the parent had no power to act against her.

The parent/relative of the child, who was recording the interaction, asked, “Madam, you can file a complaint. My child isn’t well, and I’m here to ask you a question because they’ve given injection and tablet in your hospital. If you ask, how can they put without asking me then how are you allow this in your hospital? We’ve been waiting for an hour. You arrive at 10 AM, and my child, who has school, has been waiting since 9 AM.”

In response, the doctor is heard saying in a dismissive tone, “There are doctors here spending two hours in the OT all with political influence and leave so just shut up and be quiet.”

The situation escalated further as the parent objected to the tone, saying, “you don’t need to use words like ‘shut up’ and ‘be quiet.’ Do you understand what you’re saying? A child waits to see you, and then you ask if we have any sense? You tell us to go complain wherever we want, and to anyone we want. Is this how you talk?”

The doctor allegedly replied, “There’s no need to talk to you. We can file a case for work obstruction under IPC.”

Undeterred, the parent responded, “Go ahead and file one against me. I’m standing here with your first token. What are you talking about? You’re using vulgar words. You tell me to sit in a chair, and see? Is this what you say in a hospital?”

The doctor then said, “You come and try working here.”

To which the parent replied, “Isn’t that why you’re here? You’re using disrespectful language, and talking rudely?”

The exchange ended with the doctor reportedly cursing the family saying, “You can create this kind of scene and post videos wherever you want, but God will take his course.”

The video has since drawn public criticism online, with many users calling for accountability and better patient care standards in government hospitals. Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

Doctors at the Tenkasi Government District Headquarters Hospital have accused DMK District Panchayat Councillor Kanimozhi and her supporters of threatening a duty doctor over a financial dispute. According to the hospital staff, the Councillor wanted to transfer money via GPay and was pressured to provide ₹5,000 in cash. When the doctor refused, he was allegedly subjected to intimidation.

The medical team also alleged that Councillor Kanimozhi had insisted the money be handed over to an accident victim, allegedly to resolve or suppress an accident-related matter. In response to the situation, Hospital Superintendent Dr. R. Jesline stated that a formal police complaint would be lodged against the councillor.

The situation reportedly escalated when a heated exchange broke out. Kanimozhi, visibly agitated, was heard shouting “I will go to Ma Subramanian and complain directly. I will complain about everything. Tomorrow all will come. What are you thinking of yourself?”

A female police officer present at the scene attempted to calm things down, but the councillor continued shouting. She asserted that she had requested the money to be paid via GPay and was demanding a cash return. When her demand was resisted, the councillor reportedly lashed out again, claiming, “When they came to this hospital for the investigation, there were no doctors present. I will go to Ma Subramanian and complain directly. I will complain about everything.”

The incident has drawn attention to growing concerns among hospital staff over political interference and alleged misuse of power. The matter is expected to be investigated further following the superintendent’s statement about involving law enforcement.

In a disturbing incident at the Salem Government Medical College Hospital, patients collecting medicines were allegedly given incorrect prescriptions after a pharmacist on duty was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

According to reports, the hospital, which receives between 2,000 to 5,000 patients daily from various districts, faced a serious lapse on 28 April evening. Crowds had gathered at the dispensary, forming long queues at both counters. During this time, a 56-year-old pharmacist named Mathesh, who was overseeing one of the counters, was reportedly behaving erratically.

A concerned young man noticed the pharmacist staggering and accused him of altering the prescribed medications, potentially endangering patients’ lives. Despite his repeated pleas, no hospital staff initially intervened. The man stood in protest for over 20 minutes outside the pharmacy, demanding immediate action.

The incident was recorded on video, in which a young man can be heard saying, “We need a medical report on him.” The person filming then asked, “What happened?” The youth explained, “He switched the pills and gave them to me. We handed him our medical prescription receipt, but he set it aside and gave us a different one.” When asked, “What did he say when you questioned him?” the youth replied, “He just kept blabbering and wouldn’t respond properly. I realized as I read it, What about the people bought before me?”

Shortly afterward, Mathesh locked the counter and went inside the pharmacy. As a result, several patients and their relatives were left waiting for extended periods to receive their medication. Eventually, a head constable from the hospital police outpost arrived and took the pharmacist in for questioning. Preliminary tests reportedly confirmed that Mathesh had consumed alcohol while on duty.

Family members of patients expressed serious concern, stating that the situation could have turned tragic had the mistake gone unnoticed. They called for strict disciplinary measures and urged authorities to remove individuals under the influence from such critical roles.

The Hindu Munnani has strongly condemned the Christian religious proselytization that happened at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital, alleging attempts to convert patients by promoting the idea that “Jesus will cure your illness.

The Hindu rights group expressed concerns that such actions are not only breaching the trust in the institution but could also incite religious tensions in the area. They have called for legal action to be taken against those responsible for such activities within the hospital premises.

This condemnation comes after a Christian nun visited the hospital on 1 March 2025, where she was reportedly praying for patients in the fracture treatment unit and attempting to convert them. The Hindu Munnani condemned the lack of action from the administration to stop such proselytization attempts. They warned that if no action is taken, they would launch a campaign promoting Hinduism within the hospital to encourage the speedy recovery of patients.

In a social media post, the Hindu Munnani stated, “Christian Propaganda at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital… Hindu Munnani strongly condemns. A Christian conversion campaign is currently ongoing at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital. A few years ago, when a similar campaign took place, the medical college administration failed to act. When the Hindu Munnani attempted to propagate Hinduism, the hospital administration responded by putting up a notice stating that no preaching would be allowed within the premises. However, for the last few months after the change in the hospital dean, this notice has disappeared. Currently, Christian priests, nuns, and religious workers are regularly entering the hospital to preach to patients, claiming, ‘Jesus will cure your illness. Pray for Jesus, we are praying for you.’

The statement further added “On 01 March 2025 at 6 pm, a Christian nun prayed for conversion to the patients in the fracture treatment unit. This type of propaganda within the hospital that Jesus will save patients will not only create distrust in the medical profession and the doctors among the patients, but it also serves as a means to convert the poor, innocent Hindus seeking treatment. Moreover, it risks inciting religious conflict within the hospital and could lead to law and order issues. If the conversion campaign being carried out by Christians in the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital is not stopped immediately, in the coming days the Hindu Munnani will go inside the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital ward by ward and pray for the speedy recovery of the patients who are undergoing treatment there and will apply Vibhuti, Kumkum and sing devotional songs and pray for their speedy recovery of the patients. The Hindu Munnani requests the Tamil Nadu government and the Tirunelveli city police to take immediate action against the Dean of the Medical College, the resident doctor and the hospital security personnel who are watching the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital becoming a tent for religious propaganda, and to stop the conversion campaign and protect the patients from religious conflict and law and order problems.”
