A DMK councillor from Tiruvallur municipality was arrested along with his associate for allegedly sexually harassing an IndiGo air hostess on a Chennai–Delhi flight, police said.

The accused have been identified as Prabhakaran, Ward 6 councillor of Tiruvallur Municipality, and his friend Thiagu, an advocate who is also involved in the real estate business.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred on February 25 when an IndiGo flight was preparing to depart from Chennai to Delhi. All passengers had boarded and were seated when the alleged misconduct took place.

In her complaint, the 25-year-old cabin crew member stated that the two men, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, addressed her inappropriately as she walked down the aisle performing her duties. They allegedly spoke to her disrespectfully, questioned her about her hometown, teased her and slapped her on the back of her thigh, amounting to sexual harassment.

The victim lodged a complaint the same day at the Meenambakkam All-Women Police Station. Police initially summoned the duo for inquiry on February 26, but after they failed to cooperate, a case was registered.

The two were later arrested at Chennai airport upon their return from Delhi. Police have booked them under sections relating to sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of a woman.

The accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Police said further custodial interrogation may be sought as the investigation continues.

A Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillor has been arrested in connection with brewing and selling illicit liquor in Erode district. Police seized 7 liters of liquor and the materials used for distillation during the raid.

The incident came to light after the Erode District Maoist Prevention Unit police received confidential information that liquor was being illegally sold in the Appusamy garden, located in the Kuttaiya Kadu area near Kanchikoil in Perundurai taluka. Acting on the tip-off, police rushed to the spot and found evidence of brewing activity, along with ingredients required for making liquor.

Upon investigation, police identified the person responsible as Suresh Kumar (42), a DMK member from the Pethampalayam area near Kanchikoil. He is currently serving as the third ward councilor of the Pethampalayam Panchayat for the second term and also holds the position of deputy organizer of the Perundurai East Union DMK Youth Wing.

Police revealed that Suresh Kumar was engaged in the brewing and sale of liquor with the assistance of Muthusamy (50), who has been working in his garden for nearly 30 years.

Following this, police conducted searches at the residences of both men early yesterday morning. During the operation, about 7 liters of liquor kept for sale were seized, along with equipment used in distillation. Both Suresh Kumar and Muthusamy were arrested, interrogated, and later produced before the court, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the Special Cell Police also confirmed receiving intelligence regarding illicit liquor operations in the Kuttaikadu area of Kanchikoil. A thorough search led to the discovery of brewing activities in the Appusamy estate. The arrests and seizure were subsequently handed over to the Erode District Prohibition Enforcement Police for further action.

BJP leader Annamalai called out the poor governance of the ruling DMK government. On his official X handle, he wrote, “Suresh Kumar, a DMK ward councillor and a youth wing functionary from Erode district, was recently caught selling illicit liquor. While DMK Ministers run licensed distilleries that supply the state-owned TASMAC, their grassroots functionaries operate backyard setups to peddle spurious liquor, endangering countless lives. Despite Tamil Nadu witnessing repeated tragedies and an unprecedented loss of lives, the DMK seems to have learned little from the horrific Kallakurichi hooch incident. From Marur Raja to Govindaraj alias Kannu Kutty, and now Suresh Kumar, the common thread binding them is that they are DMK men, and each has been implicated in the deadly trade of illicit liquor. DMK has successfully dragged TN back by 15 years!”

Police have arrested the president of the Samalapuram Town Panchayat, affiliated with the DMK, on charges of deliberately killing a local social activist by ramming his car into the victim’s two-wheeler.

The arrested official, identified as 60-year-old Vinayaka Palanisamy, allegedly struck down 57-year-old activist Palanisamy of Karugampalayam on the evening of September 10 near the Karugampalayam Government Primary School, along the Samalapuram–Karanampettai Road. Eyewitnesses said the victim was riding a two-wheeler when he was hit from behind by a speeding car, thrown off, and fatally injured. The accused reportedly fled the scene without stopping.

Initially booked as a traffic accident, the case took a serious turn after Mangalam police traced the vehicle to the Panchayat president. Investigations revealed that the deceased had earlier filed a petition with the Tiruppur District Collector opposing a Panchayat-funded road project allegedly meant for the private benefit of an individual. The suspension of this project reportedly created enmity between the activist and the chairman.

Police now suspect that the killing was an act of retaliation. Officers also stated that the chairman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Based on these findings, the case has been altered from accidental death to murder under IPC Section 302.

The activist’s son has accused the DMK chairman of repeatedly threatening his father and demanded his immediate removal from both party and office. “My father only asked that public money be spent for the public. For this, he lost his life,” he said.

The body of the activist has been sent for postmortem at Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, Vinayaka Palanisamy remains in judicial custody as further investigations continue.

On 11 September 2025, police arrested the president of the Samalapuram Town Panchayat in Tiruppur district, affiliated with the DMK, on suspicion of deliberately killing a local activist by ramming his car into the victim’s two-wheeler.

According to police reports, the Town Panchayat president, identified as 60-year-old Vinayagam Palanisamy, allegedly struck down 57-year-old social activist Palanisamy from Karugampalayam. The incident occurred on the evening of 10 September near the Karugampalayam Government Primary School, along the Samalapuram-Karnampettai Road. The activist, who was riding a two-wheeler, was hit from behind by a car, thrown off the vehicle, and died at the scene.

Initially treated as a traffic accident, the case took a turn during the investigation led by the Mangalam police, who traced the vehicle involved to the Town Panchayat president. Further inquiries revealed a possible motive: the activist had previously submitted a petition to the Tiruppur District Collector, criticizing a local road project initiated by the Town Panchayat. Following the complaint, the project was suspended, allegedly causing friction between the two.

Police now suspect that the Panchayat president, reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, intentionally targeted the activist in retaliation for halting the road work. The investigation remains ongoing.

In response to the incident, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran condemned the event via his official X account stating, “The news that DMK town panchayat president, Palanisamy, ran over and killed a social activist in Tiruppur for complaining against the laying of a tar road in a place that is not useful to the public is very shocking. If the mistakes of the Dravidian model government are pointed out, will death be the reward? Does the single identity of being a ‘DMK person’ and the power of office give one the right to take a life? When such crimes come to light, arrests are made only for the sake of eyewash, but they continue like the ‘Kannithivu’ serial. DMK members should be ashamed to boast about ‘good governance praised by the country’ after making people’s lives hell for four years and taking the lives of those who raise their voices against it!”

Police have taken Bharathi, the DMK women’s panchayat president from Tirupattur district, into custody after CCTV footage linked her to a jewellery theft at the Koyambedu bus stand. The incident comes amid rising concerns over a surge in chain snatching and jewelry thefts across Tamil Nadu, prompting authorities to intensify preventive efforts.

As part of these ongoing operations, several offenders have been apprehended and jailed. One such case emerged involving Bharathi, who was caught on camera allegedly stealing jewelry. The incident occurred on 14 July, when a 50-year-old woman named Varalakshmi from the Nerkundram area traveled by bus from Kanchipuram and got off at the Vengaya Mandi bus stand in Koyambedu. Upon reaching home, she discovered that four sovereigns of gold jewelry were missing from her bag.

Despite searching the nearby area, Varalakshmi was unable to locate the missing items and subsequently lodged a complaint at the Koyambedu police station. During the investigation, police reviewed CCTV footage and identified 56-year-old Bharathi as the suspect involved in the theft.

Bharathi was arrested shortly afterward, and further inquiries revealed that she has over 10 pending theft-related cases registered against her in various police stations, including those in Vellore and Ambur. Following her arrest, Bharathi was brought before the court and has since been remanded in judicial custody.

A video from Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district has sparked widespread condemnation after it showed a government employee from a Scheduled Caste background falling at the feet of a DMK councillor inside the Tindivanam Municipality office.

The individual, identified as Muniyappan, a junior assistant, was summoned to the office of the municipal commissioner following a complaint reportedly lodged by DMK councillor Ramya Raja concerning a financial file. In the footage, Muniyappan is seen apologizing to the councillor while multiple voices in the room instruct him to say sorry. Surrounded by several council members who insisted that his apology was not enough, Muniyappan ultimately bowed down and touched the councillor’s feet an act that has caused significant public and political uproar.

The viral video has led to strong criticism from civil society groups and activists, who are demanding accountability and disciplinary action against the councillors involved.

Reacting to the controversy, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai condemned the incident, describing it as a reflection of the DMK’s hypocrisy on social justice. “This is DMK’s model of Social Justice. A public servant belonging to the Scheduled Caste community in Tindivanam was cornered continuously by DMK Councillors and was made to apologise by falling at the feet of the DMK Councillor Ramya. This is not the first time DMK has humiliated public servants. This is not an isolated incident; earlier, DMK Minister Thiru Raja Kannappan had abused a government servant with caste slurs. What the DMK parades as Social Justice is, in truth, nothing more than Social Injustice.

Adding further controversy to the situation, it has come to light that Ramya Raja’s husband, Maruvur Raja, has a history of criminal activity. In April 2024, he was apprehended by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing during a vehicle inspection. Authorities seized 105 litres of rectified spirit and 5,000 litres of illicit arrack in his possession. Based on a recommendation by the Kallakurichi Superintendent of Police, who also holds additional charge for Villupuram, the District Collector ordered his detention under the Goondas Act. The order was executed while he was held at Cuddalore Central Prison.

Maruvur Raja is believed to have strong ties with senior DMK leadership and is reportedly a close aide to Minister K.S. Masthan, further intensifying allegations of political protection and misuse of power.

Senior BJP leader and National Executive Committee Member H. Raja has sharply criticized the DMK-led government, calling it anarchic, following a reported assault involving a local DMK councillor’s family in Karur district. The incident arose after a resident questioned the prolonged lack of water supply in the area.

Taking to his official X account, H Raja condemned the situation, stating, “Dravidian Model Government’s Anarchy…!! When a resident called the 15th Ward Councillor in Karur to question that for past 12 days there has been no drinking water, the DMK Councillor has attacked the person who questioned over the phone, creating chaos..!! The police should arrest the councilor who threatened, attacked, and engaged in violence against the public and take action.”

Background

The controversy stems from a complaint filed by Chitra, a 61-year-old resident of Pugazhur in Karur district. She has submitted a petition to the District Collector seeking legal action against those involved in the alleged assault on her husband, Ravi (65), who is currently undergoing treatment at Karur Government Medical College Hospital.

According to Chitra’s statement, she and her husband approached Ward 15 councillor Sabina at the Pugazhur Sugar Mill Junction around 7 PM to raise concerns about the ongoing drinking water shortage. During the exchange, Sabina’s husband, Navas Khan who is also the DMK Minority Wing District Organizer allegedly confronted them aggressively. The situation escalated, leading to Ravi being struck in the chest and collapsing. Chitra claims that others who attempted to intervene were also assaulted.

Following the altercation, Ravi was hospitalized, and Chitra has urged authorities to take immediate action against those responsible. She later fainted within the Collectorate premises after submitting her complaint and was subsequently admitted to the same hospital for treatment.

In response to the allegations, Navas Khan denied any physical assault. He claimed that while there was a verbal disagreement over the water issue, no violence occurred. “I explained the situation calmly. There was only a heated exchange, not an attack. The CCTV footage will prove this,” he said.

The incident has triggered political outrage, with H. Raja demanding immediate police intervention and arrest of the individuals involved. The situation continues to draw attention as both sides maintain conflicting versions of the events.

The Tamil Nadu police have booked 12 individuals, including a DMK councillor, for allegedly barging into a house and assaulting a youth in Tiruvarur district.

The victim, Kishore (20), a resident of Srinivasapuram, reported that his sister Mahalakshmi had recently purchased and begun renovating an old house in the locality. While painting work was underway, DMK councillor Purushothaman (45) and his associates put up large banners in front of the house to announce a local temple consecration ceremony.

When Kishore objected to the placement of the banners, an altercation broke out. On 23 August 2025, Purushothaman and over a dozen men allegedly stormed into the house, assaulted Kishore, and caused property damage estimated at ₹35,000.

Following Kishore’s complaint, Tiruvarur police registered a case against the councillor and his associates. Purushothaman, however, also lodged a counter-complaint. As a result, police filed cases against both groups, naming more than 75 people in total from either side.

Reacting sharply to the Tiruvarur incident, former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai lashed out at the ruling DMK through a post on his official X handle. He wrote, Goondagiri of DMK in full public display. DMK Tiruvarur ward councillor Purushothaman and his gang attacked a person for objecting to the placement of a banner in front of his residence. From Ministers to Councillors, goondaism is DMK’s political culture. Your party that thrives on thuggery and violence cannot hide behind staged apologies, Thiru @mkstalin.”

In what can be called deteriorating journalistic values in a state that boasts of “Dravidian model”, the media which was referred to as “Redlight media” by DMK’s RS Bharathi, we come across yet another instance of the mainstream Dravidianist media in Tamil Nadu choosing to downplay or distort facts when cases involve prominent figures from the ruling DMK. Instead of transparent reporting, they reduce serious matters to neutral or vague news blurbs.

For example, the recent arrest of Chandru, the grandson of DMK member Dhanasekaran, who serves as a Corporation Councillor and chairman of a Corporation Standing Committee. Chandru was taken into custody for allegedly murdering one youth and injuring another by deliberately ramming into their motorcycle on School Road in Annanagar, Chennai. Despite the gravity of the case and the accused’s direct political connection, the Dravidianist media has conspicuously avoided mentioning any links to the DMK. This silence is not only telling it’s disturbing. The absence of critical coverage in mainstream media when it concerns the ruling party reflects a troubling erosion of journalistic accountability.

The Sun News, owned by the DMK first family often an unofficial mouthpiece, didn’t carry the story at all. Since the case entered public discourse on 30 July 2025, there have been no news cards or coverage on their platforms. Instead, they opted to spotlight another incident a case of honour killing elsewhere in the state shifting attention away from this politically sensitive crime.

Similarly, Kalaignar News, another outlet from the first family’s stable did the same by giving update only on the honour killing case for past three days.

Following suit, News18 Tamil Nadu, one of the top Dravidianist media channels, treated the news of the murder like a petty crime and omitted any reference to the accused’s political lineage. The post on X plainly stated, “They tried to attack us with stones; then, while driving the car at high speed, it collided with a bike, causing an accident, Chandru’s confession in the case involving the death of college student Nithin Sai, who was run over by a car. The only mention of the DMK functionary’s name appeared discreetly in the accompanying news card, not in the main content itself.

News 7 Tamil adopted the same approach, reporting the incident without acknowledging Chandru’s DMK connections.

This coordinated silence and soft-pedaling by the state’s major media houses is not just disappointing it’s a sign of how compromised and selective journalism has become in Tamil Nadu when power and politics intersect.

Who is DMK Functionary Dhanasekaran?

Dhanasekaran is a senior leader within the DMK in Chennai and currently serves as the Chairman of the Accounts Committee in the Greater Chennai Corporation. He holds a prominent position within the party’s top ranks.

He has been frequently seen alongside Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian during advisory meetings in South Chennai.

He is also reportedly close to V. Sabareesan, a key behind-the-scenes strategist and the son-in-law of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

What Is The Case About?

Police in Thirumangalam, Chennai, have arrested three individuals, including the grandson of a DMK functionary, in connection with the murder of a young man and the injury of another after their motorcycle was struck by a speeding vehicle on School Road. According to initial investigations, the incident stemmed from a dispute related to a romantic relationship.

On 28 July night, 20-year-old S. Nithin Sai from Ayanavaram was killed when an SUV collided with the motorcycle, he was riding pillion near SBOA School in Anna Nagar. His friend Abishek, also 20, who was operating the motorcycle, sustained injuries in the crash.

Although the case was initially handled as a hit-and-run, police reclassified it as a murder after early findings suggested the collision was intentional. The investigation was transferred from the Thirumangalam traffic division to the Law-and-Order wing following a statement from the injured Abishek and a formal complaint filed by Nithin Sai’s father, Suresh.

Sources say Nithin Sai was a third-year college student in Mylapore. That evening, he had left home to attend a birthday celebration hosted by his friend Mohan at a nearby mall. A few juniors from his college, including a student named Venkatesh, were also present. During the gathering, Chandru, 22, reportedly called Venkatesh and verbally abused him for allegedly pursuing a girl he knew. Chandru then asked Venkatesh and his friends to meet him near SBOA School to resolve the issue.

Venkatesh and others, including Nithin, arrived on motorbikes. While most of them waited nearby, Venkatesh approached the car where Chandru and his group were seated. Chandru as mentioned above is the grandson of DMK leader Dhanasekaran, a Corporation Councillor and head of a Corporation Standing Committee. His mother is also affiliated with the DMK.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Chandru and his associates allegedly threatened Venkatesh and claimed they intended to harm his group. They then hit one of the motorcycles, prompting Nithin and Abishek to flee the scene on their two-wheeler. The group allegedly gave chase and deliberately rammed into them, resulting in Nithin’s death and Abishek’s injury.

By 29 July night, Chandru and another accused, Haroon believed to be the driver turned themselves in at the Thirumangalam police station, accompanied by supporters. Authorities are still searching for two more individuals involved in the incident.

During questioning, Chandru claimed he had no intention of causing harm and denied driving the vehicle. Haroon, on the other hand, stated that he drove the car only to intimidate the group. All three arrested individuals were presented before a court on Wednesday evening.

One of the most alarming developments under the DMK’s current administration has been the proliferation of drug-related crimes, not just in the streets, but disturbingly, among the party’s own ranks. While the state claims progress in law and order, what’s evident on the ground is a parallel rise in the visibility, availability, and audacity of narcotics trafficking.

A pattern has emerged where several DMK-linked figures have been directly involved in large-scale smuggling and peddling of banned substances. Below are key cases highlighting how deep this rot has spread and why DMK is constantly referred to as “Drug Mafia Kazhagam”.

Jaffer Sadiq – Former Deputy Organizer, DMK NRI Wing (Chennai West)

Jaffer Sadiq, a Tamil film producer and once a rising DMK figure, was exposed as the kingpin of a transnational drug syndicate trafficking pseudoephedrine to Australia and New Zealand. His arrest followed a multi-agency probe after alerts from international drug enforcement agencies. Authorities uncovered that Sadiq had masterminded the concealment of these substances in food exports such as desiccated coconut powder. Over three years, approximately 3,500 kilograms of pseudoephedrine, valued at over ₹2,000 crore, were smuggled abroad under his watch. Following these revelations, he was expelled from the DMK in February 2024.

Syed Ibrahim – DMK Minority Wing Vice President (Ramanathapuram)

Another high-profile embarrassment for the ruling party came in July 2024 when Syed Ibrahim was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau for trafficking nearly ₹70 crore worth of methamphetamine. The drugs, intercepted in Chennai, were allegedly being routed through Ramanathapuram for delivery to Sri Lanka. Acting under pressure, the DMK expelled Ibrahim from the party, but not before public outrage highlighted the growing entanglement of party officials in cross-border narcotics operations.

Subash Chandra Bose – Alangulam DMK Panchayat Union Councillor

In April 2024, Subash Chandra Bose, a local DMK councillor in Tenkasi, was caught during a vehicle check transporting 600 kilograms of gutka, a banned substance in Tamil Nadu. Despite being the husband of a sitting district panchayat president, he was arrested and later removed from all party responsibilities after his actions drew public ire.

Balamurugan – Treasurer, Srivilliputhur DMK City Unit

Authorities in Srivilliputhur arrested Balamurugan, a DMK functionary, for hoarding and distributing banned gutka and pan masala. His arrest followed a crackdown where police seized 42 kilograms of illicit tobacco products from his home. These items were allegedly supplied in bulk to local vendors.

Mahalingam – Panchayat President, Nagapattinam

Mahalingam, known as “Bullet Mahalingam,” was apprehended after a drug shipment linked to his name was intercepted in Delhi. Although no drugs were found at his residence, his name surfaced repeatedly during questioning of couriers connected to a banned synthetic drug racket. He and Alex, a DMK Union Committee member and Mahalingam’s son, were arrested and handed over to the National Narcotics Bureau.

Maniraj – DMK Student Wing Member, Gudalur

In the Nilgiris district, Maniraj, an auto driver and DMK student wing member, was arrested after police found 1.2 kilograms of ganja in his vehicle. His arrest stemmed from an intensive surveillance campaign in areas notorious for cannabis trade.

Sarbraz Nawaz & Jainuddin – Councillor and Former Councillor, Keezhakarai

In a high-stakes operation in 2022, 300 kilograms of ganja bound for Sri Lanka were seized by police, leading to the arrest of Sarbraz Nawaz, a sitting DMK councillor, and his brother Jainuddin. Both were suspected to be part of a broader international drug network using Tamil Nadu’s coast as a transit hub.

Lakshmanan – DMK Functionary, Nagapattinam

In a sweeping anti-narcotics drive, police detained Lakshmanan from Kodiyakkarai for possession of 300 kilograms of cannabis, intended for smuggling to Sri Lanka. He was one of six individuals arrested in connection with this case.

Ramana – Thiruvarur District DMK Youth Wing co-convener

Ramana, the son of DMK councillor Rajini Chinna alias Chinna Veeran, currently serving as the Thiruvarur District DMK Youth Wing co-convener, has been apprehended by the police for his alleged involvement in smuggling cannabis.

The arrest, which took place amid a surge in concerns over the flourishing cannabis trade in Thiruvarur district, has raised eyebrows about the purported connections between the DMK and the illicit drug market. Ramana, hailing from the 24th ward of the municipality, was taken into custody in connection with the illegal transportation and sale of cannabis.

Locals in the region have long been vocal in accusing a gang with purportedly connected to the DMK of actively facilitating the distribution of cannabis throughout Thiruvarur district. Allegations have surfaced indicating that this faction, allegedly led by Ramana’s father, has been instrumental in thwarting police efforts to crack down on cannabis trade. The authorities are intensifying their efforts to dismantle the gang involved in the sale of cannabis.

Despite repeated arrests and subsequent dismissals from the party, critics argue that the sheer number of drug-related scandals involving DMK officials points not to isolated cases, but a deeper structural failure, or worse, silent complicity. While the DMK high command has issued expulsions post-facto, public perception suggests the rot runs far deeper than the party is willing to admit. In an environment where political access and drug networks increasingly overlap, trust in law enforcement, governance, and public safety continues to erode.
