PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday, 8 February 2026, strongly condemned the cancellation of the TNPSC Group II and Group II-A main examinations, alleging administrative failure and incompetence on the part of the state government.

In a statement, Anbumani said the disruption was the result of negligence rather than an unavoidable technical issue.

He noted that more than 18,000 candidates were scheduled to appear for the examinations conducted in morning and afternoon sessions. Of these, 3,221 candidates had been allotted seven examination centres in Chennai.

According to him, nearly 600 candidates were misdirected after their hall tickets carried details of a different examination centre, leading to confusion on the ground.

The issue came to light only minutes before the commencement of the examination, prompting protests from affected candidates.

Anbumani further stated that while the examination had not begun in Chennai due to the confusion, it had already commenced in other centres, including Coimbatore. He said the test in such locations was cancelled only after about an hour, causing mental stress and hardship to aspirants who had already begun writing the exam.

Criticising the functioning of the Commission, he said that despite supervision by senior IAS officers and Commission members, such lapses had occurred.

He called for a thorough inquiry into the incident and demanded strict action against those in senior positions, stating that responsibility should not be shifted onto junior officials.

Anbumani also said the ruling government should accept responsibility for the disruption.

In a post on X, he wrote, “TNPSC Group II Exams Cancelled Due to Failure to Make Even Basic Arrangements: DMK Government Lacks the Competence to Conduct Competitive Exams

The TNPSC Group II main examinations scheduled to be conducted today morning and afternoon across Tamil Nadu for the recruitment of 828 posts — including Sub-Registrar, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Labour Welfare Inspector under Group II, and Assistant, Accountant, and other posts under Group II-A — have been cancelled.

The negligence in the functioning of the TNPSC administration that led to the cancellation of these examinations is condemnable. Although the TNPSC administration has stated that the exams were cancelled due to technical reasons, the real cause is the failure of the Commission to make even the most basic arrangements for conducting the examination. Across Tamil Nadu, 9,223 candidates were scheduled to write the exam in the morning session and 9,244 in the afternoon session. In Chennai, seven examination centres had been set up, where 3,221 candidates were to appear. Among them, nearly 600 candidates had been allotted Nandanam Government College as their exam centre. However, their hall tickets mentioned DG Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, Chennai, as the examination venue. This discrepancy came to light only a few minutes before the exam was to begin, after the centres had already been opened.

In protest, candidates engaged in road blockades. Attempts made to transport them to Nandanam College failed, following which the examinations were cancelled. While the exam had not commenced in Chennai, it had already begun in centres including Coimbatore and other locations. The cancellation announcement in those centres came only after an hour, causing severe mental distress and unnecessary hardship to students. Allocation of exam centres and candidates is a task that even a junior assistant-level employee in TNPSC can carry out clearly. However, despite supervision by three IAS officers — the TNPSC Chairman, Secretary, and Controller of Examinations — along with six Commission members, such large-scale confusion has occurred. This exposes the extent of rot in the TNPSC administration. The DMK government is functioning in a state where it is unable to conduct even a routine competitive examination without confusion. The ruling authorities should hang their heads in shame.

Instead of scapegoating junior officials for these lapses, a proper inquiry must be conducted and strict action must be taken against those holding senior positions in the TNPSC administration.”

The Supreme Court’s acquittal of S. Dashwanth in the 2017 rape and murder of a six-year-old girl has ignited a political firestorm in Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties training their guns on the ruling DMK government for a “catastrophic failure” of law and order that led to the convict walking free.

Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) have condemned the release, labeling it a “black day” for child safety and placing the blame squarely on the state’s “Dravidian Model” government for its incompetent police investigation and prosecution.

PMK Chief Anbumani Ramadoss: “A Painful Example of Powerlessness”

PMK President Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss led the charge, posting a detailed condemnation on social media platform X. He stated that the acquittal of Dashwanth, who was previously sentenced to death and 46 years in prison, is a “painful example of how powerless we are in getting justice for children who are victims of human animals.”

“This case was not conducted properly from the beginning,” Anbumani wrote, highlighting the procedural lapses. “Dashwant got bail as the chargesheet was not filed within 3 months. Since then, the case has started to change course.”

He expressed deep anguish over the Supreme Court’s reasoning, which pointed to insufficient video evidence and mismatched DNA results. “If Dashwant did not do anything wrong in this case, then who killed Hasini? The question arises,” he questioned, demanding accountability from the police and government.

“The government and the police should bow their heads for this,” he asserted, concluding his post with a call for a review petition and systemic reforms to ensure punishment for culprits in heinous cases.

BJP’s Tamilisai Soundararajan: “Women’s Safety Hanging by a Thread”

Adding to the chorus of condemnation, BJP leader and former Telangana Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan expressed her shock and pain over the release. In a strongly worded post on X, she wrote, “Hasini.. The beast accused of brutally assaulting and burning this child to death has been released today.. The reason given by the court.. Proper evidence was not submitted.”

She framed the acquittal as a direct result of the deteriorating law and order in the state under the DMK regime. “That beast has been released.. In Tamil Nadu, women’s safety is hanging by a thread…. Pain.!,” she stated.

Echoing Anbumani’s demand, Tamilisai called for immediate action. “A re-investigation is needed… The cruel one must be hanged,” she demanded, underscoring the public outrage and the demand for justice for the victim, Hasini.

A Collapse of Justice Becomes a Political Flashpoint

The coordinated criticism from the BJP and PMK turns a tragic judicial outcome into a major political issue. The opposition is leveraging the acquittal to paint the DMK government as weak on law and order, incapable of protecting its most vulnerable citizens, and presiding over police force whose incompetence allows heinous criminals to escape punishment.

The central thrust of their attack is that the Supreme Court’s acquittal was not a finding of innocence, but a direct indictment of the state’s investigation. The failure to file a chargesheet on time, the alleged mishandling of forensic evidence, and the inability to present a foolproof case in court are being cited as symptomatic of a larger administrative failure.

PMK founder S. Ramadoss will announce on Wednesday the outcome of disciplinary proceedings against his son and party working president, Anbumani Ramadoss, following a stormy episode that has shaken the party’s internal unity.

After a meeting of the nine-member Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) in Thailapuram on Monday, PMK MLA and close confidant of Dr Ramadoss, R. Arul, said that all members had participated in the deliberations and that since Anbumani had failed to reply to the notice, the administrators had recorded their decision in a sealed cover.

He added that the final decision would be announced by Ramadoss on September 3 at the party’s administrative committee meeting. The confrontation between father and son came to the fore in mid-August when Ramadoss appointed his grandson Mukundan, son of Gandhimathi, as the PMK’s youth wing leader.

Anbumani opposed the move publicly, voicing his dissent on the same stage where the appointment was announced, before leaving the meeting midway. The party subsequently convened a general body meeting in Puducherry on August 17, chaired by Ramadoss, where 16 charges were framed against Anbumani.

These included operating a separate office in Panayur, Chennai, making derogatory remarks about Ramadoss on social media, and installing surveillance equipment at the Thailapuram residence. A show-cause notice asked Anbumani to reply by August 31, but no explanation was submitted.

Notices issued to three MLAs backing him also went unanswered. With the deadline having expired, the DAC met on Monday to consider whether Anbumani should be expelled from the PMK or removed from his position as working president. The panel sealed its recommendation and left the final decision to founder Ramadoss.

The announcement scheduled for Wednesday is expected to carry major implications for the PMK, a party long associated with the Ramadoss family. Political observers said that the outcome could reshape the leadership dynamics within the party as it positions itself for the 2026 Assembly elections.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), led by Anbumani Ramadoss, on Tuesday released a report accusing the DMK government of betraying the public by “failing” to deliver on the majority of its election promises. The party claimed that after more than four years in office, the government had achieved little beyond rhetoric.

The PMK report, titled ‘Where is the Dawn?’, examined the 505 assurances made in the DMK’s 2021 Assembly election manifesto. It said that only 66 promises (12.94 per cent) had been fully implemented, while another 66 were partially acted upon. A massive 373 pledges remain unfulfilled, along with five additional assurances personally made by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during the campaign.

According to the PMK, key commitments relating to Sri Lankan Tamils, fisheries development and major irrigation projects had seen no progress. In agriculture, only eight of 56 assurances were implemented. On the sensitive issues of employment and education, the party said the government failed to scrap the NEET exam, cancel educational loans or create the 3.5 lakh government jobs it had promised.

The report also criticised the DMK for backtracking on governance-related reforms. It pointed out that the government had not strengthened the Lokayukta, failed to enact a Right to Services Act, and had not established special courts to tackle corruption.

Employment-related pledges, such as legislating 75 per cent job reservation for Tamils in the private sector and setting up new industrial parks, remained on paper. In healthcare, the report said only three of 18 promises had been delivered, with no progress on super-speciality hospitals or expanded ambulance services.

The PMK further noted that CM Stalin’s seven long-term “vision commitments” in sectors such as the economy, agriculture, water resources, education, healthcare and social justice had seen “no tangible results”.

Concluding its assessment, the party charged that the government had “let down the people who voted for change”. “The DMK promised a new dawn, but what Tamil Nadu has witnessed is a prolonged night of unkept promises and delayed progress,” the report said.

PMK President Dr Anbumani Ramadoss has called upon party cadre and the public to ensure that resolutions demanding a caste-based population census are passed during grama sabha meetings scheduled across Tamil Nadu on Independence Day.

In a statement, Dr Anbumani said the resolutions should clearly urge the state government to conduct a comprehensive caste census. He stressed that such an exercise is essential to ensure reservation benefits are distributed in proportion to the population and socio-economic backwardness of communities.

The move, he added, is also vital to protect social justice at a time when Tamil Nadu’s 69 per cent reservation policy is facing a legal challenge in the Supreme Court.

“Only a caste-based enumeration can provide accurate, updated data on the demographic and socio-economic conditions of various communities,” Dr Anbumani stated. “Without this, the distribution of reservation benefits will be based on outdated assumptions, which are neither fair nor sustainable,” he said.

The PMK leader said the grama sabha forums, which are constitutionally mandated to discuss local governance issues, also serve as platforms for articulating the demands of the people on broader social policies. He urged the party’s district and panchayat-level functionaries to coordinate efforts so that the caste census resolution is tabled and passed in as many villages as possible on Independence Day.

Dr Anbumani also challenged the ruling DMK to act on the resolutions if they are passed across the state. “If the DMK truly cares for democracy, it must respect the rights of grama sabhas and implement the decisions taken during these meetings,” he said, adding that ignoring such collective expressions of public opinion amounts to undermining democratic processes at the grassroots level.

The PMK, which has consistently campaigned for a caste-based census, views the exercise as a cornerstone for ensuring equitable reservation and policy formulation. The party argues that accurate caste data would enable targeted welfare schemes and help in addressing disparities more effectively.

With grama sabha meetings set to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations, the PMK’s push is expected to intensify the debate over the need for a caste census in Tamil Nadu — an issue that has been politically sensitive and socially significant for decades.

Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, the President of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), has issued a stern warning to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in Tamil Nadu, stating that the PMK’s tolerance has its limits after two PMK-affiliated youths were allegedly set on fire by cadres of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) following a quarrel in Nemili, Ranipet district, on 16 January 2025.

The victims, 22-year-old Surya (A) Tamizharasan and 25-year-old Vijay Ganapathy, sustained severe burns 60% and 25%, respectively. Initially treated at a hospital in Kancheepuram, one of the youths was later transferred to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for further care.

Police arrested 25-year-old Prem Kumar in connection with the incident. Authorities revealed that Kumar and his friends were riding through Nemili on a two-wheeler when Tamizharasan and Vijay criticized him for speeding, which led to a verbal altercation. The following day, as the victims were returning home from a cricket match, Kumar and his group confronted them again. During the scuffle, Kumar grabbed a petrol bottle from the youths and, in the ensuing chaos, some petrol splashed on them. Kumar then allegedly lit a cigarette and set them on fire.

PMK founder Ramadoss in his social media post said that on the 16 January 2025, four people – Tamilarasan, Shankar, Vijayaganapathy and another person – all of them from PMK were sitting and chatting in the playground in Tirumalpur when six people from the VCK, namely Prem, Manikandan, Gopi, Venkatesan from Tirumalpur, and Sathishkumar and Dasarathan from Kilvenpakkam, went there and made casteist abuses. They threatened to the PMK cadres to leave from there immediately, or they would pour petrol on them and burn them all.

After that, the VCK members who left from there returned after a while and threw petrol bombs at the PMK members. The petrol bombs they threw fell on Tamilarasan and Vijayaganapathy, spreading petrol all over their bodies. As a result, when they fled in fear for their lives, 6 members of the Viduthalai Siruthaigal party surrounded them and set them on fire. The two who were seriously injured are admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in critical condition and are receiving treatment.“, Dr. Ramadoss said blaming the casteist mindset and rampant drug menace prevalent among the party.

This is not the first time that the Viduthalai Siruthaigal party has indulged in violence and attacks based on caste. A few years ago, they entered the village of Nelvai and looted the properties of the people there. The situation was brought under control after the PMK staged a fierce protest against it. Their violence, which had been under control for a few years, has now reared its head again. The uncontrolled cannabis trade is the main reason for the frequent occurrence of such violence throughout the Ranipet district, including the Tirumalpur area. The Patali Makkal Katchi has been continuously urging and protesting to control the cannabis trade. However, the cannabis trade continues unchecked to this day. The police, which should have arrested and punished the 6 people who threw petrol bombs at the PMK membe s and brought them to justice, have arrested only two of them, including Prem. They are trying to protect the remaining criminals. The police should immediately arrest the 6 people from the Viduthalai Siruthaigal Party who threw petrol bombs at the PMK members and carried out the murderous attack. The cannabis trade should be eradicated throughout Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Police should also take strict action to control casteist forces so that such attacks do not happen in the future.“, Dr. Ramadoss said.

In response to the attack, local villagers protested late on 16 January, demanding swift action against the accused. Kumar has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempt to murder, causing grievous hurt, and criminal intimidation.

Anbumani Ramadoss, on 17 January, visited the hospital where the victims are being treated and condemned the attack. He stated, “Whoever carried out this act, including Prem Kumar, either belongs to VCK or is affiliated with them. This is not an isolated incident, as there have been similar incidents in the area in the past.” He also linked such violence to the rising drug addiction among the youth and warned that PMK members have been increasingly targeted in such attacks.

Anbumani stressed that the PMK’s patience is not unlimited, remarking, “If the PMK were to respond as it did in the past, it would result in violence. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin must ensure such incidents do not happen again.” He also added, “Being in an alliance with the ruling DMK does not give anyone the right to act with impunity.”

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss has strongly criticized the ruling DMK government for allegedly filing a false complaint against Ashok Srinidhi, a former executive of PMK, who exposed a major fraud worth over ₹2,000 crore committed by the company My V3 Ads across Tamil Nadu.

In a statement on his official X account, Anbumani Ramadoss condemned the Coimbatore Police for registering a case against Srinidhi, who had raised concerns about the fraudulent activities of My V3 Ads. Ramadoss questioned whether the Dravidian model government’s policy was to protect fraudsters and intimidate those who expose fraudsters. He stated, “It is condemnable that the Coimbatore Police have filed a case against Ashok Srinidhi, former district secretary of Patali Makkal Katchi, for exposing the fraud of over ₹2000 crore by My V3 Ads from people across Tamil Nadu. The government should explain whether this is the policy of the Dravidian model to file false cases against those who expose fraudsters while failing to arrest those who embezzle public money?”

“Ashok Srinidhi, who served as the district secretary of the Patali Makkal Katchi, has raised his voice against various injustices. He held several protests to expose the fraud committed by a Coimbatore-based company called My V3 Ads, which had collected more than ₹2000 crore from the public. As a result, a case has been registered against Shakthi Anandan and others of My V3 Ads, but has not been arrested yet. While Ashok Srinidhi who had been insisting on his arrest, a case has been registered against him for allegedly preventing a female assistant inspector of the Cyber Crime Unit from working. This is a blatant false case, there is no doubt about that.” He added

Ramadoss further pointed out the harassment and threats Srinidhi faced from My V3 Ads, including death threats to him and his family, and even disrespectful remarks about his mother. Ramadoss criticized the authorities for failing to act against those who threatened Srinidhi and attempted to kill him but instead choosing to file a false case against him. He stated, “Since the day Ashok Srinidhi started his fight against My V3 Ads, the company has been pressuring him in various ways. One of such threats was a person who spoke on YouTube not only threatened to kill Ashok Srinidhi and his family, but also disrespected his mother and others. He has filed a complaint in this regard at the Coimbatore Cyber Crime Police Station. However, after several weeks, no action has been taken against him, and he went to the police station only after being called for an investigation. There, he asked why no action has been taken on his complaint. A case has been registered for this, saying that he prevented a female assistant inspector of the Cyber Crime Police Station from working. After exposing the fraud of My V3 Ads, Ashok received continuous threats. At one point, there were attempts to kill him in broad daylight. But the police did not even take action against those who tried to kill him. On the contrary, if the police are filing a false case against him who is fighting for the welfare of the people, then the Tamil Nadu government and the police should explain whose interests the police are protecting?”

“No action has been taken against the owner of the fraudulent My V3 Ads company; no action has been taken against those who tried to assassinate Ashok Srinidhi; no action has been taken against those who threatened to kill Ashok Srinidhi and his family and defamed the women in his family. But a false case has been registered against Ashok Srinidhi for questioning it. The rulers should explain to the people of Tamil Nadu that, is it the policy of the Dravidian model government to protect those who have committed fraud and to register false cases against those who speak out for the people? It is unacceptable to use the police, or one of its officers, as a tool to protect a fraudulent company. It is painful that the situation of the Tamil Nadu Police has deteriorated to this extent. Protecting a fraudulent company by the government, which is supposed to protect the people, is a grave crime. The police should immediately stop aiding criminals. The Coimbatore Police should immediately withdraw the case against Ashok Srinidhi and arrest all those involved based on the complaint filed by him.”, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss said.

The post “Is Deceiving People The Dravidian Model?” Asks PMK Leader Anbumani Ramadoss, Criticizing Aavin’s Green Magic Plus Launch Over Alleged Deceptive Pricing And Reduced Quantity appeared first on The Commune.

Under the DMK government, the state-owned cooperative Aavin has again been scrutinised after launching a new milk variant, “Green Magic Plus.” The product’s announcement lacked transparency regarding its quality and pricing, only mentioning the addition of Vitamins A and D, which has drawn widespread criticism.

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss strongly criticized the DMK government, claiming that alarming details emerged when Aavin officials were questioned about the new product. According to Ramadoss, aside from a smaller pack size and a higher price, Green Magic Plus offers no significant difference from the existing Green Magic milk.

Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss pointed out that the original Green Magic milk priced at ₹22 for 500 ml, containing 4.5% fat and 9% non-fat solids. However, the newly introduced Green Magic Plus, priced at ₹50 for 900 ml, contains the same nutritional content but is sold at ₹55 per liter, which is ₹11 more than the original product.

Ramadoss described the price hike as “daylight robbery,” accusing Aavin of misleading consumers by simply adding the word “Plus” and increasing the price. He pointed out that Aavin has reduced the original Green Magic milk distribution by 80% in Tamil Nadu, pushing consumers towards the higher-priced Green Magic Plus.

Furthermore, Ramadoss expressed concern over Aavin’s marketing strategy, which raises prices while reducing the quantity, calling it a clear case of fraud. He demanded that the government and Aavin explain the changes and why no public opinion was sought before launching the new product. In his statement, Ramadoss urged the government to abandon plans to discontinue the original Green Magic milk and continue selling it at its current price, stressing that innovations should not come at the expense of deceiving the public.

Criticizing the DMK through his official X account, PMK chief Anbumani Ramadoss said, “Aavin has announced the launch of a new green packet milk called “Green Magic” in the districts of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Coimbatore, and Salem in Tamil Nadu starting from the 18th. However, the press release issued by Aavin does not contain any details about the quality or price of the milk; instead, it only states that vitamins A and D have been added. When Aavin officials were questioned about the features of the new milk, shocking facts were revealed. Apart from the reduction in quantity and increase in price, there is nothing new in the new milk.”

Currently, Aavin Green Magic Milk is sold at ₹22 per 500 ml. It contains 4.5% fat and 9% non-fat solids. The newly introduced milk also contains the same nutrients in the same amount and is said to have added vitamins A and D. The benefits and costs to Aavin are not significant. However, while Green Magic is sold at ₹44 per liter, it has been announced that Green Magic Plus 900 ml will be sold at a price of ₹50. While Green Magic milk 500 ml is sold at ₹22, Green Magic Plus 450 ml will be sold at ₹25. If we look at it that way, the price of Green Magic Plus milk is ₹55 per liter. This is ₹11 more per liter than the price of Green Magic milk. Charging ₹11 more just to add the word Plus to Aavin Green Magic milk is daylight robbery.” He added.

“If Aavin Green Magic Plus milk had been introduced as an additional type, it could have been ignored, with only those who wanted to buy it actually purchasing it. However, the distribution of Aavin Green Magic milk has been reduced by 80% across Tamil Nadu. While Green Magic Plus milk has been introduced in the districts of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Coimbatore, and Salem in the first phase, Aavin plans to expand it across the state at a lower price and discontinue Green Magic milk, which is currently sold at ₹44 per liter. This move will force consumers to buy Aavin green milk under a different name at a higher price. Raising the price of a packet by ₹3 and reducing the quantity of milk by 50 ml to cover up the increase in milk prices is a blatant fraud.” He further added.

Aavin, a public sector company, cannot be allowed to indulge in such frauds. It is welcome that the government and public sector companies introduce innovations to benefit the people. However, such innovations should not be introduced to deceive the people. The government and Aavin should explain whether deceiving the people by changing the name is the Dravidian model?” He slammed.

“Last October, it was reported that Aavin Green Magic Plus milk had been introduced in the Trichy region. I issued a statement on October 18th opposing that, and Aavin, in response, said, ‘Only a study is being conducted to introduce a new type of milk in the market that is enriched with Vitamin A and D, and slightly increased in other fat content, which everyone wants. The public will be asked for their opinions.’ On the contrary, no public opinion was asked; fat content was also not increased. How is it fair to reduce the quantity and increase the price? Aavin did not release any information about the quality of the milk and the price in the press release about the introduction of the new milk in order to hide this fraud. What should we call this behavior? The government should abandon the plan to introduce the high-priced Aavin Green Magic Plus milk. Aavin Green Magic milk, which is sold at a price of ₹44 per liter, should not be discontinued and should continue to be sold as it is now.” He urged.

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss has declared the party’s willingness to support a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into the corruption allegations against the Adani Group. Simultaneously, he has challenged Chief Minister MK Stalin whether he is ready to initiate a CBI probe into the corruption allegations involving the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

During an Assembly session, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin questioned whether the BJP and PMK, who have been critical of the DMK, would support a JPC probe into the Adani allegations in Parliament. Responding to this question, Anbumani stated that the PMK is fully prepared to back such an inquiry. He emphasized that during a prior press conference, he had already called for an investigation into the corruption charges against Adani.

Anbumani also dismissed the claim that there was a direct agreement between the Adani Group and TNEB, accusing CM Stalin of being misinformed. He highlighted that the PMK has demanded clarity from the Tamil Nadu government regarding a case filed in a U.S. court, which allegedly accused the Adani Group of bribing the TNEB to purchase electricity through the Solar Power Corporation of India.

“If there is no wrongdoing, there should be no fear of investigation,” Anbumani remarked. He questioned why the state government and CM Stalin have avoided addressing the issue and resisted calls for a probe.

The PMK reiterated its support for a JPC investigation into the Adani corruption allegations. Simultaneously, Anbumani urged CM Stalin to announce whether he is willing to order a CBI or Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, under Supreme Court supervision, into the bribery allegations involving the Adani Group and TNEB.

Opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu slammed Chief Minister MK Stalin over his letter to PM Modi opposing the Nayakkarpatti tungsten mining project, accusing the DMK of hypocrisy for supporting the project initially but now shifting blame to the Centre after public backlash.

On 29 November 2024, Chief Minister MK Stalin sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for the revocation of mining rights granted to Hindustan Zinc Limited for the Nayakkarpatti Tungsten block. The move was widely seen as a political manoeuvre to shift blame onto the central government. In response, opposition parties in Tamil Nadu united to criticize the DMK’s hypocrisy, pointing out the party’s initial support for the tungsten mining project. They emphasized that the central government had granted permission based on the DMK’s own interest in the matter, condemning the party’s inconsistent stance.

K Annamalai – BJP

Tamil Nadu BJP Chief K Annamalai, via his X official account, slammed the DMK government’s hypocrisy, stating, “On 18 October 2023, according to a report published in The New Indian Express, a senior official of the Tamil Nadu Mineral Resources Department said that tungsten metal has been discovered in Madurai and that the Tamil Nadu government has sought permission from the Central Government to set up a mine for it.

According to a statement released by the Central Government’s Department of Mines yesterday, the specifications given by the Tamil Nadu government before announcing the contract for setting up a mine in the area where tungsten was discovered in Madurai in February 2024 were implemented and that the Tamil Nadu government did not contact the Central Government regarding this contract or to object to setting up a mine for ten months from the date of the contract announcement to 7 November 2024, when the contract was awarded,” he explained.

It was the DMK government that requested the Central Government to set up a tungsten mine in Madurai. It was the DMK government that gave the specifications for announcing the mining contract. The DMK government, which had been hiding this from the public for the last ten months, is now acting as if they do not know anything about it and is now protesting it,” he blamed.

In the same Madurai Arittapati area, the Tamil Nadu government’s TAMIN company has obtained a lease for 30 years from 2008 to construct a granite mine on 47.37 hectares of land, and now TAMIN company has returned its lease license, and the DMK government has informed the central government that out of a total land area of 20.16 square kilometers in the Arittapati and Meenakshipuram villages of Madurai, 1.93 square kilometers has been declared as a biodiversity heritage site. Chief Minister Stalin is now trying to re-enact the same drama he staged about ten years ago, claiming that he had unknowingly signed a contract to extract methane from the Delta region. The DMK’s drama will no longer be tolerated by the public,” he finally said.

Anbumani Ramadoss – PMK

PMK Chief Anbumani Ramadoss criticized the Tamil Nadu government, questioning, “Why is the Tamil Nadu government playing a double game regarding the Aritapatti tungsten mine issue? People will not be fooled by the drama of pinching the child while rocking the cradle!”

He accused the state government of hypocrisy, pointing out that, “The Central Government has exposed the double game of the Tamil Nadu government in the issue of granting permission to set up a tungsten mine in areas covering an area of 2015 acres, including Aritapatti in Melur taluk of Madurai district. The people of Tamil Nadu will not believe the drama of the Dravidian model government, which is giving all its support to the construction of a tungsten mine on one hand and opposing it on the other, by pinching the child and rocking the cradle.”

The Central Mines Department has released some details about the project, after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wrote to the Prime Minister, stating that the construction of a tungsten mine in the Aritapatti area can never be allowed and that the project should be canceled. The Central Government has said, “Some inputs were received from the Tamil Nadu government before the auction of the Aritapatti tungsten mine. The Tamil Nadu government’s TAMIN company has handed over the lease for the granite mine covering an area of 47.37 hectares in the area to facilitate the auction of the tungsten mine. From the start of the auction process last February until the announcement of the results on 07.11.2024, there was no objection to the tungsten mine. There was no request from the Tamil Nadu government to cancel the auction of the tungsten mine,” he said.

The Central Government has already informed the Tamil Nadu government about the details of the tungsten mine being put up for auction. The Tamil Nadu government did not raise any objection at that time. Furthermore, the Tamil Nadu government had sought the Central Government’s permission last year to set up a tungsten mine in collaboration with private companies. Thus, the Dravidian Model Government, which supported the setting up of a tungsten mine in Aritapatti in every way, is now acting as if it is opposing it after facing strong opposition from the people,” he added.

Whenever DMK comes to power, it will prioritize its own interests over the interests of the people. There are many examples of the betrayals committed by the Dravidian model government, such as allowing methane gas exploration in Cauvery irrigation districts and approving the expansion of the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi. The DMK government is now committing the same betrayal in the Aritapatti tungsten mine issue. The Central Government should respect the sentiments of the people of Aritapatti and abandon the plan to set up a tungsten mine there. @PMOIndia @CMOTamilnadu,” he finally said.

Edappadi K Palaniswami – AIADMK

Previously, on 29 November 2024, speaking to reporters in Salem, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami claimed, “Now, after facing opposition from the public, the DMK is objecting to the project. Chief Minister MK Stalin is simply playing a political game by sending a letter to the Union Government opposing it.”

He also shared on his official X account, stating, “Newspaper and website reports indicate that the Vidya DMK government had sought permission to set up a tungsten mine in Madurai district in October 2023. Why did the “pen warrior” @mkstalin, who wrote a letter requesting cancellation of the permission, hide the fact that it was his government that had sought permission? The DMK, which has brought the NEET exam and is pretending to oppose it, using the same formula to deceive the people of Melur. The DMK government has made a hidden effort behind the screens to exploit the people by constructing tunnels and taking away their livelihoods. The people will teach them a suitable lesson in due time for this letter-play and drama-based deception that is currently being carried out.”

What Actually Happened?

According to the old report, the DMK government had sought approval from the Centre to move forward with the tungsten mining project, only to face significant local opposition. In response, CM Stalin appears to be playing politics with the issue, rather than pushing ahead with the mining plans.

After identifying significant deposits in the region, the state’s Department of Natural Resources requested permission from the Union Government to mine two key minerals, tungsten and molybdenum. These minerals are crucial for various industrial applications. A senior government official acknowledged the local community’s concerns and assured that the State had sought the Central Government’s approval in light of these socio-economic issues.

The DMK-led Tamil Nadu Government is considering joint ventures to develop these mineral resources. Molybdenum is seen as vital for establishing Tamil Nadu as a hub for hydrogen production, while tungsten has potential uses in energy storage. According to official sources, India’s total molybdenum ore reserves stand at approximately 19.29 million tonnes, with Tamil Nadu holding the largest share—around 9.97 million tonnes. This mineral is highly prized for its use in missile and aircraft components, as well as in the nuclear industry.

Molybdenum is also an essential alloying agent in steel, cast iron, and superalloys, improving strength, corrosion resistance, and wear durability. It is increasingly in demand for use in the automotive industry to produce lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Additionally, the metal is being explored as a potential raw material in the production of hydrogen electrolysers.

Tungsten, a rare and valuable mineral, is found in Madurai district. The Union Government has recognized its strategic importance due to its uses in high-capacity energy storage, particularly in lithium-tungsten oxide batteries. These batteries offer greater stability and energy storage potential, positioning tungsten as a critical resource for future technological advancements.
