India’s T20 World Cup-winning cricketers returned home triumphantly on the morning of 4 July 2024. The World Champions arrived in Delhi following which they spent the morning with PM Modi at his residence. Subsequently, the team went on an open-top bus parade from Marine Drive, where throngs of fans danced in celebration and welcomed the victorious squad. The euphoric homecoming was akin to a grand street party. Following the victory parade, the team was honored at Wankhede Stadium.
Indian cricket fans have been in celebratory mode since the team clinched the World Cup on 29 June 2024 after winning the final match against South Africa in the T20 World Cup. “The huge turnout of fans to welcome us shows they were as desperate for this T20 World Cup title as we were,” said a thrilled Rohit Sharma at the end of the victory parade at the packed Wankhede Stadium.
However, naysayers saw the crowd that gathered at Marine Drive with a crooked mindset. All-in-all commentator Sumanth Raman could only see “unemployed” people and not fans at Marine Drive. He wrote on his X handle, “Yesterday’s frenzied reception for the Indian Cricket team made me happy and sad. Happy because a team that had become World Champions got such a rousing reception. Sad because so many people could afford to turn up on a weekday at such short notice. Some may have been students but to me, the pictures somehow symbolised the employment crisis as much as it did the craze for cricket. Countries used to winning don’t do this on this scale. #T20WorldCup2024″

Netizens slammed Sumanth Raman’s pessimistic views and reminded him of crowds that gathered across the world after World Cup trophy wins.
Save your crocodile tears. Here is a photo of local football team parade after their 2nd win in super bowl that they won couple of years ago. This is also on a weekday. Compared to that, crowd in India is expected considering it's world cup they after more than a decade. pic.twitter.com/1dJOhO49Tk

Many even reminded him of being a sports commentator in some part of his life, and yet Sumanth had to make comments that he made.
⚡🤦Surprising that Dr Sumanth, who once hosted the BSNL sports quiz, would tweet like this, indicating how his political views have overshadowed his passion for sports.

This post makes me livid .. No Mr Raman, those who turned out to celebrate India’s win aren’t jobless.. they are ambitious ppl who believe in work life balance and unlike the avg Pidi who carries a slavish mindset, they work on their own terms – I m sure many would have gone back… https://t.co/7g2JJbLnaP
