Suriya yields to Vanniyar pressure, replaces Agni motif with Goddess Lakshmi while the character was Christian in real life

Actor-turned-virtue signaller Suriya and makers of the Jai Bhim movie found themselves facing heat after they were caught red-handed peddling false propaganda trying to create rift between different communities.

In a scene, the sub-inspector who is responsible for the death of members from the Irular community is shown as a person belonging to the Vanniyar community with their sacred motif ‘Agni’ being situated in the frame.

But in reality, the sub-inspector’s name who implicated the Irular men and thrashed them was Anthony Sami and is not a Vanniyar but a converted Christian. In fact, Vanniyars were instrumental in getting justice for the victim’s family.

While the makers of the film chose to retain the name former Justice K. Chandru for Suriya’s character, they had deliberately distorted facts showing the inspector as a Hindu Vanniyar when in fact the sub-inspector was a Dalit Christian.

After this deliberate twisting of facts came to light, members belonging to the Vanniyar community lashed out at Suriya and the makers of the movie for the unwarranted provocation.

Many fans of Suriya from the Vanniyar community started removing the boards of the fan club in protest.

The Vanniyar Sangam too registered their protest against Suriya and makers of the film.

With the makers of Jai Bhim earning the wrath of the Vanniyars, they have now replaced the Agni motif in the calendar with an image of Goddess Lakshmi.

However, netizens have pointed out that this is again a mischievous and deliberate twisting of facts in order peddle a narrative against the Hindu majority in Tamil Nadu.

BJP Tamil Nadu’s Asuvathaman lashed out asking if whether the makers of the film think of Hindu as fools. He said that until the name of the character is changed to that of the original (Anthony Sami), the protest will continue.

Film Distributor JSK Gopi pointed out the problematic scene again pointing out that the SI was a Christian and not a Hindu and that the calendar with Lakshmi image is out of place.
