Hindu Munnani has called on the Tamil Nadu government and police to take the Thirumangalam temple idol vandalism case seriously, urging swift identification and arrest of the actual culprits behind the incident. The group criticized the authorities for their continued slow and ineffective response, especially as incidents of idol desecration persist across the state.
In a statement issued on its official X handle, Hindu Munnani said, “In Tamil Nadu, swami idols continue to be vandalized, the police offer excuses, and the state government remains indifferent…
Anti-social elements have broke swami idols in a temple located in the Thirumangalam municipality area of Madurai district yesterday. Local have filed a complaint about this at the Thirumangalam police station. The breaking of idols and destruction of temples in both urban and rural areas continues like a serial story in Tamil Nadu.
The Tamil Nadu police not only follow a sluggish approach in identifying the real culprits, but even when the offenders are caught, they brush it off by saying it’s the act of mentally ill or underdeveloped individuals. Hindu Munnani strongly condemns this attitude of the police. The Tamil Nadu police should stop making excuses and drop the case against the culprits who vandalize Swami statues and take strict action against them. The Hindu Munnani urges the Tamil Nadu government and police to pay due attention to the Thirumangalam temple idol vandalism case and arrest the real culprits involved in the incident and bring them to justice.”

According to reports, over 10 Swami idols were damaged in the latest attack at a temple in Palaniyapuram, kuthiraisaripuram, which falls under the Thirumangalam municipality. The temple houses more than 20 idols, including deities such as Ayyar Swami, Periya Karuppu Swami, Sannasi, Mayandi, Rakachi Amman, Chinna Sami, and Andi Sami.
The night before the incident came to light, unidentified vandals entered the temple premises and attempted to destroy the idols. The head portions of idols including Ayyar Swami and Rakachi Amman were damaged. The idol of Andi Sami was split in two and thrown down from its pedestal.
Shockingly, most of the damaged idols had their right hands deliberately broken. In total, over 10 idols were defaced, and even the temple’s ceremonial bell was stolen. Following the incident, local villagers filed a police complaint. Authorities have since inspected the site and are reviewing CCTV footage to track down the suspects.
Hindu Munnani has urged the state government and police to act promptly, treat the matter with seriousness, and bring those responsible to justice without delay.
