Sterlite Copper has launched a new scholarship programme for Thoothukudi students called the ‘Sterlite Education Scheme for Coastal Students’, a continuation of its Tamira Vidhyalaya school and scholarships project. The inaugural event for the current phase saw scholarships worth INR 5.45 lakhs being distributed to 100 students from coastal communities. Their parents were also invited to witness the occasion.
Launching the initiative, Ms. A Sumathi, COO, Sterlite Copper said “Students represent the hopes and aspirations of entire communities. This initiative is a humble effort to support their academic goals and is an assurance that dreams are indeed achievable.”
During the first phase of the distribution, nearly 7000 students benefitted from the financial assistance provide by Sterlite Copper. In the current phase, the company plans to distribute scholarships during this academic year to an additional 7000 students pursuing their education in and around Thoothukudi. The scholarship will be provided to deserving, meritorious students drawn from the coastal areas and villages of Thoothukudi.
Sterlite Copper has previously launched a series of projects to augment the academic and financial assistance available to students. These include setting up of smart classrooms, providing academic tools, and supporting schools in improving their infrastructure. The scholarships provided in the current phase are in addition to another key initiative in progress by Sterlite Copper, which is the setting up of the Tamira Vidhyalaya, an innovative smartschool for the students of Thoothukudi.
