Spain eases lockdown restrictions but warns citizens to exercise caution

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made a move towards easing the country’s strict lockdown starting tomorrow, but has warned that the threat is completely eradicated.

In an address to the press on Saturday, Sanchez said that they had managed to reclaim 99% of the land lost by COVID-19, and that the citizens should exercise a high amount of caution since the virus was still there.

The death toll had fell to 179 on Saturday, down from 229 the previous day, while the cumulative death toll rose to 26,478 the day before, as reported by their health ministry.

Close to 51 percentage of the population will be progressing into the first phase of what seems to be a four phased lockdown ease. This percentage will be determined after making sure that the regions they lived in fulfilled the necessary conditions imposed by the government. In specific regions, restaurants and shops will open at reduced capacity, and museums, gyms and hotels will open their doors for the first time in nearly two months.

Barcelona and Madrid, which are two of the biggest cities in the country, haven’t made the cut for phase 1.

Since the tourism industry contributes upto 12% of the country’s revenue, hotels in the phase 1 regions have been allowed to open all the rooms and nature tourism for groups of 10 have been allowed.
