Representatives of several organisations, including the Bharatiya Forward Bloc party, Moovendhar Munnetra Kazhagam, members of the Madurai North Circle Nadar community, and the Madurai Muslim People’s Association, submitted a petition to the Madurai District Collector seeking implementation of the court order permitting the lighting of the lamp at the Deepathoon.
Speaking on behalf of the Madurai Muslim People’s Association, Bashir Ahmed said that delaying the execution of the court’s directions was only contributing to tension in the area. He stated that the judgment had been delivered more than once and that repeated postponement was unnecessary.
“If you keep postponing the judgment that was given not once but twice, you are only creating tension,” Bashir said.
Emphasising communal harmony, he said that Muslims and Hindus had historically coexisted peacefully in Madurai and cited the shared legacy associated with Sikandar and Murugan as a symbol of unity.
“Muslims and Hindus have always been united everywhere, and here in Madurai, Sikandar and Murugan have been together as a symbol, an old symbol. We don’t know if they compromised or gave way to each other,” he said.
Bashir added that the issue could have been resolved without controversy if the lamp had been lit without creating tension.
“If you had just lit the lamp without creating tension, the problem would have been resolved for everyone,” he said.
