Mohammed Zubair belonging to the Islamist propaganda outlet Alt News has been nominated for the Index on Censorship’s Freedom of Expression Awards 2023.
According to the website of Index on Censorship (IoC), the award is given to “the people carrying out courageous, high-impact and determined journalism that exposes censorship and threats to free expression.”
The IoC goes on to describe Zubair saying that he and others “co-founded Alt-News a portal dedicated to busting fake news to address flaws in the Indian media ecosystem, such as overt political pressure on media outlets and opaque methods by which government funding was awarded to media outlets.”
“Alt News aims to foster a stronger and more vibrant media environment by amplifying dissenting voices and creating barriers to prevent mis/disinformation from spreading.“, the IOC description reads.
Furthermore, the IoC has significantly downplayed the sharing of a selectively edited video without context, portraying it as an act of ‘exposing.’ Furthermore, it praised the labeling of certain factual statements from Islamic scriptures as ‘blasphemy,’ equating it with a form of journalistic courage. This narrative overlooks the tragic fact that individuals were killed by extremists in response to these actions, putting Nupur Sharma’s life in jeopardy due to Zubair’s actions.
It is to be noted that it was after Mohammad Zubair tweeted a clip of Nupur Sharma’s remarks about Prophet Mohammad that the issue exploded.
Alt News and its co-founders have peddled fake-news many times.
You can read about the instances when Mohammed Zubair and his partner Pratik Sinha peddled fake news.
