The Supreme Court of India has slammed the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) for asking for postponement of local body elections when Lok Sabha by-elections and Assembly elections have been taking place across the country.
Rural local government elections were held in Tamil Nadu in 2019. Elections were not held in only nine districts due to the division of the new districts at that time. Accordingly, elections for these nine districts will be held on October 6 and 9.
The case came up for hearing again in the Supreme Court yesterday before a bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli. The TNSEC had asked for 7 months more holding urban local body elections.
“When Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are held in Tamil Nadu, why not hold local elections only. Why is the Tamil Nadu Election Commission continuing to ask for time?”, the court asked.
The court has now asked the TNSEC to file an affidavit in two days and a decision will be taken after that.
